$14.29 | | Ralph McTell Best Of: Streets Of London CD (2000) (Import) England; United Kingdom
Mozart: Sinfonia Concertante/Horn Concerto
$9.39 This collection of 24 songs by British folk singer, Ralph McTell, includes "Streets of London" and "Louise".
This 23-song collection is slightly misleading in one important respect -- it does contain (and, indeed, opens with) "Streets of London," but the latter is the original all-acoustic version from the 1969 album Spiral Staircase, rather than the later re-recording, which was the actual hit single version. That said, this is still a worthwhile collection for those who don't want to track down CD reissues of McTell's first three albums on the Transatlantic label. The sound is good and the annotation is reasonably thorough, and for those who enjoy McTell's early music it's a good cross-section of the work, though also hardly alone, as this catalog's highlights have been reissued numerous times on CD. ~ Bruce Eder
While Ralph McTell is best known for his classic folk song of the down-and-out, "Streets of London," it's far from being the only string to his guitar. "Hesitation Blues," "Spiral Staircase," and the very dark "Michael in the Garden" all came from the same late-'60s period, and deserve equal stature as thoughtful, literate pieces in a time before it became truly fashionable. And they were just the beginning. "England 1914" is more than picture postcard nostalgia of a time and place, but a look into the hearts and minds of a country about to change beyond all expectations. The heart of McTell's inspiration has always been the blues, and he's repaid the debt often on record, so it's only fair that a collection should feature some of his best blues performances, including "Too Tight Drag" by his hero Blind Blake, a perfect illustration of McTell's guitar mastery (which has all too often been ignored), fingers running around the fretboard on a ragtime classic. McTell's tended to stand outside the frame of most singer/songwriters because many of his songs tend to be less personal that focus on characters, issues, and times. While the end result has possibly been a smaller long-term audience, the material itself stands up beautifully, work not only of feeling, but also craft, whether on the lighthearted ("Granny Takes a Trip") or the deep ("Daddy's Here"). As introductions to an artist go, this is nigh on perfect, hitting many of the high spots. But with a career that's kept going strongly into the new millennium, there must, inevitably, be a volume two. ~ Chris Nickson

$14.05 | | Stewart Copeland Orchestralli CD (2005) Bonus DVD
Mozart: Sinfonia Concertante/Horn Concerto
$19.89 Stewart's 2004 orchestra presented on CD and the DVD live in Italy. Ponde. 2004.
During the 40-minute documentary included on the packed-in DVD in his Orchestralli release, former Police drummer Stewart Copeland declares his love for Buddy Rich. He also mentions the music Rich plays is "not necessarily my kind of music." What he says he loves about Rich is the man's "effervescence" more than the compositions he plays. Later he talks about how music is "instinct," "best when it comes from the heart rather than the brain," and "is how it feels." The man also wrote an opera for the Cleveland Opera Company, so take all these things into consideration before attacking Orchestralli. At no point does Stewart use the best word to describe his own music: knotty. But this knotty music is filled with effervescence, heart, and uplifting emotion. Zappa's jazz at its happiest or "what if Aaron Copland fronted the modern high school jazz band" are fair comparisons, but this "serious" music often breaks free of any comparisons and winds itself into a thrilling frenzy that only recalls that guy who used to drum for the Police. "Eve" pays homage to Weil and Mancini before kicking it up a notch, allowing Copeland to bring out that whip crack on the snare that propelled Sting and Andy Summers into high gear. The percussive, just-a-shade-too-big-to-call-a-chamber ensemble here responds the same way, coming alive and forgetting about how "serious" this music is. Good thing too, because Copeland's compositions probably aren't the most fascinating charts to read, and they're either pop or soundtracky. They do have some interesting twists -- sometimes too many -- but more than anything, they're jumping-off points for the parties involved. Generally things follow the "Eve" pattern. The shrunken orchestra heavily plays an interesting melody, Stewart and the four-piece percussion unit -- Ensemble Bash -- he brought with him show the orchestra how it's done, then everyone catches fire and you can't help but smile. Recorded live in Italy during a short stint of shows during 2002, the sound quality is crisp and does an excellent job of capturing this swirling tangle of notes. Longtime Copeland fans will be especially interested in the vibrant bits of the Rumble Fish soundtrack and the redo of the Equalizer television theme here; however, being familiar with the originals ...
