| | Ringo Starr Ringo's Rotogravure CD (1976)
Bobby Vinton's Greatest Hits music CDs
$10.39 For his Atlantic Records debut, Ringo tried to duplicate the critical and commercial success of RINGO and GOODNIGHT VIENNA by drawing on the talents of many of the same guest musicians who were featured on those albums. There are many highlights, including "Cookin' (In The Kitchen of Love)," an upbeat John Lennon song that features a playful Lennon on piano and backing vocals and "I'll Still Love You," a dark, haunting pop song that was written by George Harrison. Other celebrity guests who drop in to help their old pal Ringo include Paul McCartney, who wrote and performed on the ballad "Pure Gold" and Eric Clapton, who wrote and played on the breezy pop rocker "This Be Called A Song." Lesser known tracks like the thumping, laid-back rocker "Dose of Rock and Roll" and an energetic version of the sixties R&B hit "Hey Baby" ensure that ROTOGRAVURE is entertaining from start to finish.
Additional guest artists: Jim Keltner, Randy Brecker, Michael Brecker.

Razor & Tie's Sweet Life: His Greatest Hits Singles is the first CD compilation to draw from Paul Davis' recordings for Bang and Arista. In other words, it's the first and only definitive career retrospective, containing such '70s hits as "I Go Crazy," "Thinking of You," "Superstar," "Darlin'," and "Sweet Life," as well as the early-'80s singles "Do Right," "Cool Night," and "'65 Love Affair." It could be argued that the compilation should have been sequenced in chronological order, but the 14 songs flow smoothly in this incarnation, ...

| | Heptones Cool Rasta CD (1976) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Bobby Vinton's Greatest Hits songs
$10.49 COOL RASTA contains the BOOK OF RULES album and various rare recordings.
The Heptones were one of the first--if not THE first--reggae vocal groups, and also one of the finest--beginning in the mid-1960s, they had a three-part, gospel-tinged, R&B-based harmony sound that became the outline for nearly all successive rocksteady and reggae harmony groups. Preceding their '70s classics NIGHT FOOD and PARTY TIME by several years, COOL RASTA is a collection of their earliest, most righteous, groove-heavy tunes, including their best-known song, the inspirational "Book Of Rules." While slightly more rough-hewn than their '70s work, COOL RASTA is nonetheless earthy, passionate, and essential stuff for devotees of cool Jamaican vocal sounds.
One of the preeminent vocal groups of ska and rocksteady eras, the Heptones were talented, successful, and flexible enough to adapt to the changing tide of Jamaica's music in the 1970s. This was fortunate, because the group released some of its finest material in the '70s, blending cool doo-wop-flavored harmonies with the deep roots rhythms of reggae. COOL RASTA finds the fine lead tenor of Leroy Sibbles and the sweet voices of Earl Morgan and Barry Llewellyn in top form.
The record is aptly titled--easy, laid-back grooves are the order of the day here. The title track in particular is a drowsy, down-tempo jam that has the Heptones' stellar harmonies floating through the mix like ghosts. "Dreadlock" is half-loungy, half-cerebral, and upholds the group's Rastafarian beliefs, as do "Peace and Harmony" and the historically conscious "Suffering So." Trojan's 2002 reissue of the album features wonderfully remastered sound and nine bonus tracks, including several compelling dub remixes and two versions of "Book of Rules," one of the band's best songs.
Cool Rasta is essentially an updated DVD audio version of the Heptones' 1973 Book of Rules album, with the smooth and spooky "Cool Rasta" and "Dreadlock" added, along with a handful of rare dub mixes, all done in stellar 5.1 surround sound. The original sessions were produced by Harry Johnson (Harry J), and although some of these tracks now seem a little flat and uninspired, "Cool Rasta" and "Book of Rules," in particular, are standouts, ranking easily among the best numbers ...

| | Willie Nelson Super Hits Volume 2 CD (1995)
Bobby Vinton's Greatest Hits album
$6.89 SUPER HITS VOLUME 2 picks up where SUPER HITS left off, collecting ten singles and well-known album tracks from Nelson's nineteen-year tenure at Columbia Records. The first volume includes most of Nelson's number-one hits, but still most of the songs on VOLUME 2 should be familiar to fans of country radio. The collection focuses entirely on the mellow side of Nelson's music, drawing mostly from the singer's 1980s middle-of-the-road material. Included are several jazz standards ("Stardust," Without a Song") and light R&B covers ("Just Out of Reach," "Harbor Lights").
VOLUME 2 also features "Seven Spanish Angels," Nelson's chart-topping duet with Ray Charles; and Nelson's solo recording of "Mamas Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys." ...
