A typically brief and no-frills budget-priced compilation from Curb Records, the Kingston Trio's GREATEST HITS is probably best for the neophyte who's a bit curious about this folk-pop act of the '50s and '60s, or perhaps the old fan who just wants a digital copy of "Tom Dooley" without much effort. Unlike some of Curb's best-ofs, this one features a well-balanced overview, pairing the trio's biggest hits--the aforementioned murder ballad, the swaggering "Greenback Dollar," the comic subway rant "M.T.A." and the story song "The Tijuana Jail"--with a good selection of lesser-known but equally fine tunes. The sly "Scotch and Soda" and a pair of Pete Seeger interpretations, the moving "Where Have All the Flowers Gone" and a spirited take on the traditional "Worried Man Blues" closely modeled after Seeger's, are the highlights of the other tunes. GREATEST HITS is inexpensive but not half bad. Greatest Hits Music Review Purchase Greatest Hits CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Israel Iz Kamakawiwo'Ole Facing Future CD (1993)

| | Donovan Greatest Hits CD (1969)
Greatest Hits CD music
$6.25 This 1999 reissue contains four bonus tracks not on the original release.
An expanded reissue of a 1969 best-of compilation, GREATEST HITS is still the best single-disc distillation of the magic that was Donovan. (1992's double-disc TROUBADOUR, however, is great for bigger fans or rarities buffs.) One of the classic love-him-or-hate-him artists of the '60s, Donovan Leitch's mixture of folky sincerity ("Colours"), hippie-dippie humanism ("Atlantis," "Epistle To Dippy") and just plain daffy surrealism ("Sunshine Superman," "Hurdy Gurdy Man," "Mellow Yellow"), set to Mickie Most's Swinging London arrangements, heavy on the horns and strings, epitomizes the Carnaby Street era like no one else can.
The handful of bonus tracks include Donovan's surprisingly cool collaboration with the Jeff Beck Group on "Barabajagal" and his theme for the Chuck Jones TV cartoon "Rikki-Tikki-Tavi." Novices should start here.
Epic/Legacy's 1999 reissue of Greatest Hits improves on the original 1969 collection in a number of ways. First of all, the original Hickory versions of "Catch the Wind" and "Colours" are included instead of re-recordings, which is enough to make this new edition preferable, but the compilers have also chosen to include the original mono version of these hits instead of the stereo cuts that were on the first edition. Plus, they've added four excellent bonus tracks: "Atlantis," "To Susan on the West Coast Waiting," "Barabajagal," and "Riki Tiki Tavi." All of that means that this expanded and updated Greatest Hits is a near-perfect single-disc summary of Donovan's ...
| | 20th Century Masters: The Millennium Collection - The Best Of Village People CD (2001)
Greatest Hits music CDs
$6.79 20th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection: The Best of the Village People is a concise collection of the group's definitive moments. Starting with their three most memorable singles, "Y.M.C.A.," "In the Navy," and "Macho Man," the album also features "Go West," "Ready for the '80s," and the 12" mix of "Y.M.C.A." While this isn't the most in-depth Village People retrospective available, it's solid enough to make it worthwhile for casual fans. ~ Heather Phares

| | Israel Iz Kamakawiwo'Ole Alone In Iz World CD (2001)
Greatest Hits songs
$13.29 While the name Israel Kamakawiwo'ole falls trippingly off few tongues, the Hawaiian singer better known as "Iz" was one of the biggest stars in his home state. Iz first came to public attention as a member of the popular Hawaiian group known as the Makaha Sons of Ni'ihau. His subsequent solo career brought even greater fame, and countless fans were saddened at his untimely death in 1997. Those who mourn his passing will be gladdened by the posthumous release of ALONE IN IZ WORLD, compiled from various recording session outtakes.
While one might expect a big, deep sound to emanate from a gargantuan-sized body like that of Iz, the hefty singer actually possessed a gorgeous, fragile tenor voice full of tenderness and delicacy. That voice is put to use here on tunes that alternate between voice-and-ukelele solo performances (Iz was no slouch on the uke) and more fully arranged tunes enhanced after the singer's death. Whether crooning in his native tongue or in English, Iz cuts right through to the heart ...
| | Peter, Paul, and Mary Very Best Of Peter, Paul & Mary CD (2005)
Greatest Hits album
$10.09 With their beautiful harmony vocals and gentle melodies, Peter, Paul & Mary were the most popular folk act of the 1960s. While Bob Dylan was unquestionably the genre's most influential and revered performer by the mid-1960s, it was Peter Yarrow, Noel Paul Stookey, and Mary Travers who helped him to reach a larger audience with their accessible '63 renditions of his "Blowin' in the Wind" and "Don't Think Twice, It's All Right." In addition to Dylan, the group also championed the work of Gordon Lightfoot and John Denver, most notably with the wanderlust tales "For Lovin' Me" and "Leaving on a Jet Plane" (a runaway hit in '69), respectively.
All of the aforementioned tunes are presented on THE VERY BEST OF PETER, PAUL & MARY, a 25-track set carefully compiled by the trio itself. This 2005 collection focuses almost exclusively on the '60s and '70s work of PP&M, with the exception of the deceptively ...

| | John Fahey Of Rivers & Religion/After The Ball CD (2004)
Greatest Hits music CDs
$11.65 This German Warner Bros. reissue is a nice repackaging of the late John Fahey's 1972 album Of Rivers & Religion and his wonderfully genteel 1973 release After the Ball from his all too brief sojourn with the label. These recordings represent a shift for Fahey, playing both solo and with an ensemble. On Of Rivers & Religion, the ensemble included many of the New Orleans players who performed on Walt Disney's Song of the South film soundtrack. Gorgeous, slow, ringing slide and fingerplucked tones establish easy themes before the band enters with clarinets, banjos, and trumpets. After the Ball was a more up-tempo affair steeped in the Delta blues and in wildly varying New Orleans and bluegrass music. There is some fine Piedmont playing on the disc, as well, on "Horses." There are a number of stylistic collisions here, where Delta blues meets ragtime on "Om Shanthi Norris" and slide guitar meets the 19th-century ballad on the title track that closes the album. Taken together, these two albums represent a ...

| | Billy Ray Cyrus Wanna Be Your Joe CD (2006)
Greatest Hits album
$12.59 Three years after his gospel album, THE OTHER SIDE, Billy Ray Cyrus took another break from his more regular TV acting stints (DOC and HANNAH MONTANA) for 2006's WANNA BE YOUR JOE, a set of accessible, mainstream country tunes. Dubiously mullet-free and sporting a shaggy hairdo that recalls Keith Urban on the cover, Cyrus stays in a surprisingly traditional-minded vein for much of the record, even collaborating with legendary performers George Jones and Loretta Lynn on the rustic "Country Music Has the Blues." Other highlights include the rock-tinged "Stand" (featuring an appearance by Miley) and the self-mockingly nostalgic "I Want My Mullet Back," rounding out an enjoyable album that will appeal to Cyrus's long-time fans.

| | Hoyt Axton Pistol Packin Mama/Spin Of The Wheel CD (1998)
Greatest Hits music CDs
$15.19 This import CD is a reissue of Hoyt Axton's third and fourth studio albums released on his own Jeremiah label. Pistol Packin' Mama, from 1982, is dominated by remakes of well-known songs like the title track, "I Walk the Line," and "Don't Fence Me In." Axton's songwriting contribution is at an all-time low, and one of the few new originals is the annoying "Fearless the Wonder Dog," the melody of which is based on the "Casper the Friendly Ghost" cartoon theme song. Spin of the Wheel from 1990, Axton's final album, refocuses on his own songs, some of which are fine additions to his canon. "We Could've Been Sweethearts," in particular, is as good as anything he did during his mid-'70s peak. Overall these are Axton's weakest albums since the '60s, but fans will find several diamonds in the rough. ~ Greg Adams
2006 two-fer by this Country and songwriting legend. On Pistol Packin' Mama (originally released in 1982), Axton mixes his own songs with covers of 'Pistol Packin' Mama', Johnny Cash's 'I Walk The Line', Cole Porter's ...
