DAVID ROTHLandslide top vote-getter at the Falcon Ridge (NY) Folk Festival’s “Most-Wanted” competition and NAIRD “Indie” nominee (singer-songwriter album of the year for “Digging Through My Closet”) DAVID ROTH strikes many chords, hearts, and minds with his unique songs, offbeat observations, moving stories, and powerful singing and subject matter. Since emerging from another nationwide field of several hundred songwriters to open the Kerrville (TX) Folk Festival as it’s New Folk Winner, the Chicago native (and two-time national anthem singer for the NBA’s Michael Jordan-era Bulls) has garnered accolades for his performances, workshops, writing, and recordings. Featured on many of Christine Lavin’s Rounder compilations, the former artist-in-residence at New York’s Omega Institute has also been a songwriting judge at Kerrville, Napa Valley (CA), Tumbleweed (WA), Eventide Arts (MA), and the South Florida Folk Festival. In addition to singing “Earth” at the 40th Anniversary of the United Nations, David’s “Rising in Love” was performed at the 100th Anniversary of Carnegie Hall in 1991, and “Manuel Garcia” and “Nine Gold Medals” both appear in the best-selling Chicken Soup for the Soul series by Jack Canfield and Mark ...

| | Indigo Girls Rarities CD (2005) Limited Edition; Remastered; Digipak
Best Of Don Gibson Vol. 1 music CDs
$7.59 In the mid-1980s, the Indigo Girls helped reintroduce thoughtful, introspective singer/songwriter-based music back to the mainstream, turning out a steady stream of material over the ensuing decades. The 2005 collection RARITIES captures the tunes that fell through the cracks along the way, including live cuts, soundtrack contributions, and more. The first thing that becomes apparent here is the duo's excellent taste in covers. The disc opens with a scaled-down, acoustic version of the Clash's furious "Clampdown" that will come as a shock to anyone familiar with the original. They also do a lovely (if less revelatory) take on the Grateful Dead's transcendent "Uncle John's Band," not to mention the Neil Young-less Crazy Horse's forlorn "I Don't Wanna Talk About It." There are plenty of original tunes as well, of course, including live versions of the fervent "Cold As Ice," and "It Won't Take Long," which sounds like it could have come off Bob Dylan's Rolling Thunder tour. RARITIES is largely aimed at hardcore Indigo Girls fans but bears some surprises for the casual listener as well.

| | Ryan Adams Jacksonville City Nights CD (2005) Import
Best Of Don Gibson Vol. 1 songs
$17.45 Ryan Adams's sophomore album with his Cardinals backing band, and his second studio offering of 2005, JACKSONVILLE CITY NIGHTS finds the ever-prolific singer/songwriter in his twangy, Gram Parsons-inspired persona. In fact, on "Dear John," jazz/pop superstar Norah Jones plays Emmylou Harris to Adams's Parsons, as the two settle into a slow, smoky duet.
While JACKSONVILLE has an energetic moment or two ("The Hardest Part"), it never wanders anywhere near Adams's amped-up ROCK N ROLL territory. In general, this is melancholy, down-tempo alt-country, which, given Adams's past in Whiskeytown, explains why the performer sounds so at ease here. "A Kiss Before I Go" begins the album on a wistful note, setting the tone with barroom piano lines and weepy pedal-steel work. On "Hardest Way to Fall," Adams indulges in a sauntering Dylan-like vibe, while "September" proves to ...
