It's no mystery why Disneyland adopted the Mike Curb Congregation's rendition of "It's a Small World" as the official version of its theme song -- the group's clean-cut optimism and genteel style is a ringer for the pop choruses of the '60s, and bears more than a passing resemblance to their Osmond Family labelmates. The group scored most of their hits while backing other MGM artists such as Little Jimmy Osmond and Sammy Davis, Jr., but had one major hit on their own with "Burning Bridges" from the Clint Eastwood film soundtrack Kelly's Heroes. Greatest Hits contains the original recordings of every Mike Curb Congregation song that registered on the pop and adult contemporary singles charts, as well as a goodly selection of hits on which the group backed other singers. These include Sammy Davis, Jr.'s chart-topper "The Candy Man," Lou Rawls' "A Natural Man," Jud Strunk's delicate "A Daisy a Day," and Hank Williams, Jr.'s country hit "All for the Love of Sunshine" (also taken from the movie Kelly's Heroes). A cover of the English Congregation's "Softly Whispering I Love You" is a nice bonus since the original hit version is rare on CD, but it would have been nice to have one of the group's better-known collaborations with Tony Bennett or Little Jimmy Osmond in place of a non-hit such as "It Was a Good Time." Greatest Hits may be brief, but its budget price and strong selection of hit recordings makes it a good value. ~ Greg Adams

| | Moody Blues December CD (2003)
Greatest Hits MP3 Album
$7.85 (MP3 Available for Download) One must give the Moody Blues credit for tenacity and a single-pointed focus. For 37 years they've put forth a startlingly consistent series of themes: optimism, a kind of blind-faith spirituality that the universe is in good hands and that people are by and large decent and kind, and love songs that can be a bit twee, but nonetheless connect when one is in the emotional space to hear them. Their music has always been intimate and pretentious in the best sense of the words. December is the Moodies' first Christmas album. The classic lineup has been whittled down to three: John Lodge, Justin Hayward, and Graeme Edge; Ray Thomas decided to call it quits after the band's 2003 tour ended. The band is augmented by unofficial member and producer Danilo Madonia in the studio. This is the most curious of Christmas recordings. December is an album about the spirit of Christmas but, with its lack of carols (though it does feature Irving Berlin's "White Christmas" near the end), it sounds more like another chapter in the Moody Blues' legend, and that's exactly what it is. Like many Moody Blues records since the 1980s, the original songs are nostalgic, pointing listeners back to memories of an idyllic past when things were simpler, and toward the hope that social and spiritual renewal are just around the corner. The set features a number of Hayward and Lodge originals, ...
| | Best Of The Mike Curb Congregation CD (2004)
Greatest Hits music CDs
$7.25 It was only a matter of time before Curb Records, the imprint of record producer (and former lieutenant governor of California) Mike Curb, turned its attention to the Mike Curb Congregation. For those who weren't around or have short memories, the Mike Curb Congregation was a large-scale singing group along lines similar to the Ray Conniff Singers but with something of a political edge, akin to the Johnny Mann Singers (remember their upbeat syndicated show Stand Up and Cheer, which aired just as Vietnam was coming to a head and America's campuses were exploding?). The latter was more a matter of nuance that anything else, mostly thanks to Curb's concurrent efforts as head of MGM Records at the end of the 1960s to single-handedly "clean up" the music business by dropping all of the drug-oriented acts from the label -- his big signing as head of the label was the Osmonds. And it meant that the Mike Curb Congregation got to make records, including appearances on several soundtrack albums (most notably Kelly's Heroes) and covers of songs derived from several MGM soundtracks. So this 29-minute CD is a bit suspect, to say the least. But -- and this is the amazing part -- in a dorky sort of way, this disc has its merits. The group sings with more visceral passion than, say, Mitch Miller & the Gang, and has a freer ...
