Best Of The Lettermen: All Original Recordings CD music
$10.49 Though nowhere near as powerful nor all-encompassing as the earlier End of the Beginning compilation, Do Anything You Wanna Do nevertheless serves as an introduction to the crucial origins of Eddie & the Hot Rods, pursuing them through not only two vital albums (and one so-so follow-up), but also the clutch of singles and EPs that established the band in the first place. Overall, the collection is too one-dimensional to truly represent the awesome power of the Hot Rods. That earlier compilation proved that live cuts from the Marquee and Sound of Speed EPs are probably the best testament to the group; though the studio work was exemplary, effortlessly recapturing the essence of the concert experience, it was on-stage that the Hot Rods still made their greatest impact. Here, just a handful of in-concert songs are allowed to disrupt the flow while, similarly, the apocalyptic epics with which the band rounded off its first two albums, "On the Run" and "Beginning of the End"/"We Sing...The Cross," are criminally absent. So what does that leave? Basically, not much. The hit "Do Anything You Wanna Do" is the highlight, of course, but its still considerable impact is ultimately nullified by the succession of other cuts in a similar mold, which dignified Life on the Line but utterly hamstringed Thriller. In their original surroundings, you could forgive the band for throwing in the occasional transparent power pop gems. But when they just fly at you ...
| | Rising Storm Calm Before... / Alive Again At Andover CD (1992)
Best Of The Lettermen: All Original Recordings music CDs
$13.39 In the early to mid-'60s, thousands of teenage rock & roll bands bashing away in garages, rec rooms, and basements across America sought to document their music on self-released recordings, and the Rising Storm were no different, even if instead of a garage, they practiced in a dormitory at Phillips Academy, an upscale prep school in Andover, MA. The six members of the Rising Storm were all Phillips students, and in 1967, with the guys facing graduation, they went into a local recording studio for a few days and recorded an album, eager to preserve their music for their friends and classmates. By the early '80s, the Rising Storm's self-released album, Calm Before..., had developed a potent reputation among record collectors, and mint-condition copies were trading hands for more than a thousand dollars each. Thankfully, the album is now available on CD, so no one needs to fork over a four-figure sum to hear it, but it is one garage rock collectable that happens to live up to its reputation. The Rising Storm were not the usual band of teenagers with bad attitudes covering "Louie, Louie"; roughly half of the songs on Calm Before... are originals, and they're surprisingly subtle and ambitious stuff, moody folk-rock that often suggests the subtle influence of the psychedelic revolution that was looming on the musical horizon. If the Rising ...
