| | Pat Boone Pat's Great Hits CD Pat Boone Discography of CDs
Pat Boone's smooth, amiable singing style marked him as a pure pop crooner when he came on the scene in the mid-1950s, and while his clean-cut image (and sound) positioned him as the acceptable alternative to the grittier rock & roll that was beginning to emerge, early R&B/rock & roll styles were very much a part of his musical makeup. This is made clear on the collection PAT'S GREAT HITS, a concise compendium featuring some of his early charters. While some of the biggies (perhaps most notably "Ain't That a Shame") are absent, it's amazing to hear Boone dig into Ivory Joe Hunter's "I Almost Lost My Mind" with the same elan he brings to a fully orchestrated pop ballad such as "April Love." While Boone's style was smoother than anything generally accepted as rock & roll, there's no doubt that the man heard here doing his best Elvis on "Don't Forbid Me" was heavily inspired by earthier sounds.
Personnel: Pat Boone (vocals).

Pat's Great Hits album
$7.95 Vocalist Monica Mancini follows up her chart-topping self-titled debut with an outstanding collection of 12 songs written by one of America's greatest songwriters, Johnny Mercer. The Dreams of Johnny Mercer features the stunning vocalist performing seven songs with previously unpublished lyrics written by Mercer with great new music by Barry Manilow. Great American Songbook standards like an Italian version of "It Had Better Be Tonight," one of many Mercer and Henry Mancini collaborations, and the guest appearance of Alvin Chea, the bass singer of Take 6, on an excellent a cappella arrangement of "Ac-cent-tchu-ate the Positive" adds to the beauty of this insightful and ...

It's more than just journalistic shorthand to refer to Kylie Minogue as the European Madonna. She's been at it as long as the Material Girl, and her mix of sexy style and dance-pop sound is very much in league with that of her American counterpart. The catch here is that, while Minogue had previously only been a star in Europe, FEVER represents her American breakthrough. Not surprisingly, ...

| | John Mayall Along For The Ride CD (2001) Import
Pat's Great Hits album
$28.29 This is a hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both regular and Super Audio CD players.
This album from British blues artist John Mayall features guest appearances from Peter Green, Mick Taylor, Otish Rush, Billy Preston, Johnny Lang, Steve Miller, and several others.
John Mayall helped popularize the blues with '60s rock audiences via his pioneering albums, which brought a rock-oriented energy to the blues without any trace of pandering. Impressive as those early recordings were, few would have predicted that Mayall would still be doggedly pursuing his own personal blues-rock vision three-and-a-half decades later.
Mayall is accompanying by a stellar roster of guests on ALONG FOR THE RIDE, but title notwithstanding, he remains fully at the helm throughout. Some of those who contribute their talents are younger artists who've probably learned a few lessons from Mayall (Jonny Lang, Jeff Healey), but others are respected peers who helped usher in a new wave of blues in the '60s, such as cult heroes Peter Green and Davy Graham. The sound they create is a hard-hitting take on the blues, often enlivened by rock inflections. But no matter how many other artists get the spotlight on ALONG FOR THE RIDE, it's Mayall's personal style that gives the album its shape.
2001 album for the British blues master, featuring an all-star cast including ...
| | Rough Guide To Cajun Dance CD (2004) (Import) United Kingdom
Pat's Great Hits CD music
$12.79 What is it about Louisianan dance music that keeps people listening? Is it the sheer danceability of it, regardless of the mood? Perhaps there's something in the omnipresent emotion that lets the musicians break the language barrier and put their feelings onto the listener. As one of many albums on the market in the current revival of popularity for Cajun music, the Rough Guide contribution to the current offerings is a welcome one. The major figures of the genre are present, as are a few relative unknowns with powerful abilities. The album opens up with the best contemporary Cajun has to offer, with a thumping dance from the Mamou Playboys. As it moves forward, it touches upon pieces from Beausoleil (surprisingly, the two Beausoleil pieces are the only appearances of a Doucet here) and the venerable Magnolia Sisters. Bruce Daigrepont provides a number worth hearing, as do the Balfa Brothers ...
