| | Hank Williams, Jr New South: Original Classic Hits Vol. 2 CD Hank Williams, Jr Discography of CDs
(4 Customer Reviews)
1977's THE NEW SOUTH was produced by Hank Williams Jr's spiritual cousin Waylon Jennings. It's no surprise, then, that it sounds very much like one of Jennings' albums of the period. Much of THE NEW SOUTH has an acoustic, almost folky feel.
Witness Williams' uncharacteristically sensitive love song "Once and for All" and the almost autumnal version of Gordon Lightfoot's "Looking at the Rain." Bocephus fans will appreciate Williams' typically rambunctious take on his father's "You're Gonna Change (Or I'm Gonna Leave") as well as a wonderfully loose jam-session version of Bill Monroe's bluegrass barn burner "Uncle Pen."
This is Volume 2 of Curb's Bocephus series.

New South: Original Classic Hits Vol. 2 album
$7.25 ONE NIGHT STANDS is Bocephus in 1977, thus a lot less rowdy than you might expect. At the time, Nashville was in the throes of one of its cyclical flirtations with crossover appeal. Consequently, there's a lot of stuff here that, as they say, doth protest the smell of cow manure too much.
The arrangements are laden with shimmering electric pianos and ...

| | Hank Williams, Jr Pressure Is On: Original Classic Hits Vol. 7 CDs (1981)
New South: Original Classic Hits Vol. 2 music CDs
$5.99 THE PRESSURE IS ON is one of Hank Williams Jr.'s best '80s albums. The regretful anthem "All My Rowdy Friends Have Settled Down" is almost a country version of Warren Zevon's "Detox Mansion."
On "The Coalition to Ban Coalitions," Williams does an excellent Daffy Duck imitation and comes to terms with our highly litigious society. "Some want to get rid of Fender guitars," he complains. There's also Williams Sr.'s "I Don't Care (If Tomorrow Never Comes)," done as a gorgeous duet with George Jones, and--reinforcing the family theme--the very funny "Ballad of Hank," written and co-sung by his father's old bandmate Don Helms.
This is Volume 7 of Curb's Bocephus series.

| | Hank Williams, Jr. & Friends CD (1976)
New South: Original Classic Hits Vol. 2 CD music
$5.19 This is where Hank Williams Jr. solidified the hard-hitting style he would become known for, perhaps inspired by the pioneering outlaw country records Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings had begun making a couple of years earlier. Charlie Daniels and the Marshall Tucker Band's Toy Caldwell help out here, and you can hear Williams's trademark mix of country and Southern rock taking shape on his cover of the Tucker Band's classic "Can't You See." And while he was no longer singing in his father's shadow, he continues to reference the late country icon on songs like "Living Proof," though the mode of expression is now undeniably the younger Williams's own. HANK WILLIAMS JR. & FRIENDS created the template that would be followed on a subsequent string of Williams's most enduring albums.
