| | Hard To Find Hits Of Rock N' Roll, Volume 2 CD
You could hardly call most of these tracks hard to find! This second volume in Curb's Hard to Find Hits of Rock & Roll series collects the original hit versions of "Cool Jerk" (the Capitols), "Expressway to Your Heart" (the Soul Survivors), "Happy Together" (the Turtles), "Double Shot (Of My Baby's Love)" (the Swingin' Medallions) and "Psychotic Reaction" (the Count Five). Granted, in some cases, these songs were recorded by one-hit wonders, but even if you couldn't remember who originally recorded these tracks, they are immediately recognizable. ~ Al Campbell Hard To Find Hits Of Rock N' Roll, Volume 2 Music | List Price | $7.98 (You save $1.19) | | Category | Rock/Pop Albums, Rock CDs, Pop, Oldies | | Label | Curb | | Orig Year | 1995 | | All Time Sales Rank | 229957 | | CD Universe Part number | 1015821 | | Catalog number | 77774 | | Discs | 1 | | Release Date | Jun 06, 1995 | | Studio/Live | Studio | | Mono/Stereo | Mixed | | Recording Time | 28 minutes |

$13.49 Here's a real grab bag of Top 40 hits from 1960 to 1966, some of them indeed very hard to find on CD or even hear on the radio. Some of them are not really not that hard to find on CD, though this disc (like every one in this series) takes pains to present original 45 RPM single versions, often in stereo. It leans toward the innocuous pop side of pop/rock, though within that framework there's a lot of variety and a good amount of quality: slightly soul-influenced pop (Gene McDaniels' "A Hundred ...

| | John Ehlis Ensemble San Carlos CD (2002)
Hard To Find Hits Of Rock N' Roll, Volume 2 CD music
$17.19 Review in Expose magazine:John Ehlis Ensemble "San Carlos"SÃvac Records 1002Ostensibly this is a jazz recording, although doused with enough challenge and uniqueness to give it a far wider appeal, reaching into world-ethnic realms and acoustic territory reminiscent of the best ECM and Windham Hill releases, even incorporating some elemental influences from country and folk. John Ehlis is a guitarist, playing acoustic and electric, but also ocarina, mbira, and percussion. His brother Chuck (who passed away after the recording but prior to the release the disc is dedicated to his memory) contributes electric bass, slide guitar, and a home-made instrument called the "thwackoleum" made from materials found at flea markets, garage sales and hardware stores. The other members of the greater "ensemble" (9 persons in all, although all of the tracks feature smaller subsets of the larger group) contribute additional guitars, woodwinds, brass, percussion, miscellaneous ethnic instruments and female voice, the latter by Denise Fraga who does an outstanding part in the group improvisation pieces. The material here is a mix of composed and improvised material, achieving just the right balance between the two throughout the ten tracks, which cover approximately 50 minutes. It should also be mentioned that the recording and production are nothing short of superb, with attention given to detail and clarity no instrument ever gets buried in the mix, keeping the sound energized and vibrant from beginning to end. Fans of world-acoustic or ethnic jazz, or Jade Warrior circa Waves should definitely give this one a listen. -Peter Thelen, ExposeMore Press about the John Ehlis Ensemble: "Owing as much to various world music traditions as to jazz, Ehlis's typically ruminating and occasionally explosive music is an original global fusion, steeped in the multikulti aesthetic of late trumpeter Don Cherry."-Derk Richardson, San Francisco Bay Guardian"...(Ehlis) is superbly supported by ...
| | Cat Empire Two Shoes CD (2005)
Hard To Find Hits Of Rock N' Roll, Volume 2 music CDs
$9.99 Two Shoes, the second studio album from Melbourne, Australia's Cat Empire, was cut at the legendary Egrem Studio in Havava, Cuba -- the site of landmark recordings by the Buena Vista Social Club and countless other Cuban artists -- in just under a month in late 2004. Like their self-titled studio debut, Two Shoes was a massive success in the sextet's homeland, debuting at number one, and its word-of-mouth stoked an already expanding fan base in Europe and North America -- enough of one to nab the band a booking at Tennessee's prestigious Bonnaroo music festival in 2006 -- despite the lack of an American release. The fuss was justified: the Cat Empire is a wholly engaging, genre-splicing band that exudes equal parts musical intelligence and no-frills party-down exuberance. The Cuban influence is never ...
