One of Hank Williams, Jr.'s best '80s albums, due largely to shrewd song selection and improved production, courtesy of Muscle Shoals veteran Barry Beckett. There's also great guitar playing by Steve Earle cohort Richard Bennett.
Highlights include the ode to the new South "Young Country," in which Williams comes out in favor of both Waylon Jennings and Van Halen, and two rock covers--the Stones' "Honky Tonk Women," and the Georgia Satellites' "Keep Your Hands to Yourself," that could have been written with Williams in mind. "Shadow Face" is a clearly autobiographical song about his ambivalent relationship with both his famous father, and the Nashville establishment.

WILD STREAK seems to be Hank Williams Jr.'s conscious attempt at crossing over to a wider audience. This is straight-ahead Southern redneck rock with nary a hint of Nashville, though Williams' good ole' boy anthem "If the South Woulda Won" makes the somewhat puzzling suggestion that the day Patsy Cline died should be a national holiday.

Hal Ketchum's The Hits collection covers the singer/songwriter's most commercially productive period on the country charts in the early '90s. These tunes didn't fit in with the new traditionalist revival of the period. At times, Ketchum's laid-back, soft rock material sounds as if it could have been recorded by James Taylor or Kenny Loggins.
