| | Steve Goodman Hot Spot CD Steve Goodman Discography of CDs
Hot Spot, Steve Goodman's seventh album overall, was also his fifth LP on what presumably was a five-record deal with Asylum Records. The first two albums on that deal had grazed the bottom of the charts and the next two had missed the charts entirely; Hot Spot may have constituted Goodman's last shot with a big label. He used that shot to try for a pop hit. The sound of the disc was very much in keeping with the style of pop/rock purveyed in Los Angeles recording studios in the late '70s and early '80s, an adult contemporary, radio-ready commercial approach that mixed in occasional disco rhythms and strings ("Bobby Don't Stop") with power ballads that often were arranged as duets ("Sometimes Love Forgets," featuring Phoebe Snow). The lyrical subjects ranged from romantic regret to romantic recrimination, and the overall effect was uninterruptedly smooth. Of course, that's not what one necessarily expected from Steve Goodman, the eclectic singer/songwriter, and he didn't really do it very well, sounding for the most part very restrained, even if he had written or co-written most of the songs. The session musicians were not among L.A.'s A-list, except for guitarist Jeff Baxter, but they came close enough. Still, one listen to "Sometimes Love Forgets," on which Snow turned in a typically memorable performance while Goodman just sounded embarrassed, indicated that this was a case of an artist trying, in a perfunctory manner, to be something he clearly was not. It wasn't until the last track, the jazzy novelty "Sdrawkcab Klat (Talk Backwards)," that it sounded like anybody was having any fun at all. And by then it was really too late. Not surprisingly, Hot Spot turned out to be Goodman's final major-label release. ~ William Ruhlmann
He may have been trying to be more mainstream with this album but the great "Sdrawkcab klat (Talk Backwards)" shows that his sense of fun can rise to new heights. ~ Richard Meyer

Hot Spot CD music
$11.49 Steve Goodman reached the charts with his first two albums for Asylum Records, Jessie's Jig & Other Favorites (1975) and Words We Can Dance To (1976), and that may have convinced the label to spend more money on his next LP (money intended to be recoupable against royalties should the album take off, of course), because the sessions for Say It in Private appear to have been quite elaborate. For the first time since his second album, Somebody Else's Troubles (1973), Goodman ...

$5.69 Born and raised in southern California, Robert James, the son of a nationally renowned Opera soprano, started his Christian walk in the late 1970's at Harvest, Riverside under pastor Greg Laurie. RJ spent most of his childhood attending Lauries' church and it was there where he was introduced to the incredible music of the late Keith Green. Sometime in the summer of 1978, Keith had played a concert at Harvest where RJ's father had purchased a vinyl record of "For Him Who Has Ears To Hear." And like so many before him, RJ was hooked to the melodies, conviction, and lyrics of Green. RJ was only 7 years old. "Keith's music & lyrics challenged me through many emotions, even at a very young age. And as a mature Christian adult I really began to adopt his message into my own songwriting. I get a 'spiritual shot in the arm' every single time I hear his music ... even ...
