Gregg Chambers And Creole Junction CD music
$31.39 If it contained nothing else than than the ravishing slow version of Kurt Weill's "Barbara Song," 1964's THE INDIVIDUALISM OF GIL EVANS would still rate as one of the greatest of '60s jazz LPs. It's possible that tenor saxophonist Wayne Shorter never surpassed his solo here, which is similar in impact to the young Stan Getz's career-defining turn on Woody Herman's "Summer Sequence Pt. IV." Even though the original "Barbara ...
| | Mary Flower Bywater Dance CD (2005)
Gregg Chambers And Creole Junction music CDs
$12.19 It's not just that Mary Flower fingerpicks an elegantly mean fingerstyle blues, ragtime, and jazz guitar. And it's not just the gentle, controlled warmth of her voice. There's something else special going on here, and it may have to do with the fact that she traveled from her home base of Portland to a studio on the south end of New Orleans to make this record, and was joined in the process by such local A-listers as Henry Butler (piano), Jon Cleary (piano, organ), and Dr. Michael White (clarinet). The music that came out of these sessions is unfailingly sweet, hot, and sassy -- not a single track fails to impress and several are deeply moving. Her rendition of "Brother, Can You Spare a Dime?" is brilliant, and her original guitar composition "La Grippe" is both subtly complex and viscerally exciting. Check out the wonderful brass band accompaniment that fills up the space behind her guitar on "New Orleans Hop Scop Blues" and Cleary's spooky Hammond organ on the dark "Last Kind Word Blues." But every track on this album has something about it that will give you shivers, and taken as a whole this is one of the most satisfying albums of the year. ~ Rick Anderson
"Elegant" and "funky" aren't words you'd expect to find in the same sentence, let alone used to describe the same album. But Mary ...

| | Verve Remixed Christmas CD (2008)
Gregg Chambers And Creole Junction album
$10.45 What makes a classic Christmas song work is that, even as we change and the world changes, it stays the same, popping up each year during the holiday season steady and sure, providing a kind of thread to holidays past, an example of perceived nostalgia at its most powerful. Messing with that emotional nostalgia is a tricky thing, which is why this set of holiday classics remixed by various producers and DJs walks a thin line between delightful surprise and what-were-they-thinking disaster. When things work here, they work surprisingly well, bringing a fresh sonic perspective to songs that might seem immutable. Ella Fitzgerald's "What Are You Doing New Years Eve" becomes a joyous cacophony in its Mangini vs. Pallin mix, while a pair of Nina Simone gems, "I Am Blessed," remixed by Wax Tailor, and "Chilly Winds," remixed by Fink, collect a haunting atmospheric power in their new versions, although it is still Simone's singing that carries things. On the other hand, the Brazilian Girls remix of Dinah Washington's version of "Silent Night" fails to take into account the song itself, which is, after all, about a kind of joyous silence, and amped up like this, it just sounds wrong. Yesking's remix of Billie Holiday's "I've Got My Love to Keep Me Warm" suffers a similar fate. It's initially interesting to hear Holiday's voice set against a reggae rhythm, but by the end of the song, it's just plain odd and disorienting to hear her presented this way. Sometimes classics are classics because that's what ...
