Moby Grape's self-titled 1967 debut album remains one of the most enduring works to have emerged from any band in the '60s. From the outset, however, the band was saddled with problems on every front. The album's release was confounded by record company over-hype and by inter-band, outer-band, business, and personal complications. Moby Grape was allotted a larger budget for its second album, WOW/GRAPE JAM, and the initial release featured two full albums shrink-wrapped together.
WOW is the true sophomore release, with GRAPE JAM being 20 minutes of in-studio jamming by Grape members with Al Kooper and Mike Bloomfield. Even with the band's widening divisions and track record of consistently bad decisons, all five members of the band contribute to WOW--with some absolutely stunning results. The album is filled with great songs that are sympathetically arranged and performed, among them the fragile "He," the bluesy "Murder In My Heart For The Judge," and the soulful "Bitter Wind." Moby Grape ends the album with a new version of "Naked, If I Want To"--a strutting, funky take on an acoustic track from their debut.

severly edited. One to avoid. Seek out the Sundazed reissue from 2007.

Stars' Eyes Once Gazed Upon Me Here So opens the song "Rose Colored Eyes". Bob Mosley's soulful voice propels the poetry into my soul. It's beautiful, man. These are some of the most poetically substantive lyrics ever for a rock song. This is the classic Grape to get. "Miller's Blues" and "Can't Be So Bad" feature Jerry Miller's tasty 335 guitar licks. Mosley, on bass and vocals also shines on "Bitter Wind". "Murder In My Heart For The Judge" is one of the best songs, again featuring Mosley singing with strong vocal backup from the rest of the band. Jerry Miller was a Blues Giant in His Time! I had the old vinyl version of this work. Remember listening to it over and over and over again. OK, perhaps the "Grape Jam" portion of the work didn't get the same repeated play, but the first two sides certainly did.
The CD remastering is very well done, although it excludes the last band on the 1st side entitled "Just Like Gene Autry - A Foxtrot." What was neat about the vinyl version was that the playout of the recording would pause and wait for your to change the player from 33 to 78 RPM to hear the work. Thankfully, it's preserved in Moby Grape's "Greatest Hits" collection.
"Miller's Blues" can be categorized as one of those "career" guitar solos by Jerry Miller, who was certainly one of the best blues/rock guitarists during the era. Perhaps a better PR department would have increased the listenership of Miller and the rest of this fine band. Hopefully the group's work on CD will do it now! $6.19 This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. Bush. It's to the band's credit that the charismatic singer fails to steal the show, despite creditable ...

Wow/Grape Jam songs
$6.75 A surprise best-seller when it was first released, this mostly improvised pairing of singer/keyboardist/producer Al Kooper with two major guitar heroes of the day sounds fascinating all these years later precisely because of the distance of time--nobody makes records like this any more. The material runs the gamut from folk pop (covers of Donovan and Dylan), to blues ("Albert's Shuffle," "You Don't Love Me"), to heady jams ("His Holy Modal Majesty"), to big-band jazz ("Harvey's Tune").
All the tunes make effective templates for the kind off-the-cuff music-making that in less capable hands might have resulted in simple noodling. In fact, although Bloomfield and Stills don't play together on any of the cuts (Bloomfield played on one side of the original LP, Stills on the other), all three principals get off lots of good licks ...
