While not as startlingly original as Sparrow's Point, Shindell's second CD is still far better than the work of his many contemporaries. His political songs, "Arrowhead" and "Fishing," make their points as affecting stories well told rather than by posturing. Never one to shy away from difficult subjects, the "Ballad of Mary Magdalene" is a masterful casting of one of religion's pivotal relationships; that by implication says a great deal about the confused state of human affairs. The playing and singing are all first-rate. ~ Richard Meyer

Dirty Linen (12/94-1/95, p.55) - "...Between his rich, commanding vocals and his creative fingerstyle playing, Shindell could make quite an impression on the basis of his performance skills alone. However, it is his songwriting that distances Shindell from the singer-songwriter pack..." Blue Divide album
$14.45 Though he would come to notoriety in the late '90s through Joan Baez and Dar Williams' cover versions of his songs, and his participation in Cry, Cry, Cry, a trio including Williams and Lucy Kaplansky, Shindell seemed to come out of nowhere with 1992's SPARROW'S POINT. His rich baritone is reminiscent of John Gorka (with whom Shindell played in a college group), and his dark, poetic songs show the influence of Richard Thompson and Leonard Cohen.
Nevertheless, Shindell is a complete original, and this debut shows an artist already fully formed, thanks in part to an apprenticeship on the do-or-die New York singer-songwriter scene. ...

Blue Divide CD music
$14.65 In "The Next Best Western," the opening track of this terrific collection of tunes, life on the road takes its toll both literally and figuratively. The narrator goes so far as to question God's motives as he rolls along the turnpike: "Did he who made the lamb/Put the tremble in the hand/That reaches out to take my quarter?" Indeed, Shindell works in landscapes of desperation and longing throughout the album, with fugitives ("May"), absent fathers ("I Saw My Youth ...

Blue Divide music CDs
$14.95 Something of a New Folk supergroup, the trio of Richard Shindell, Lucy Kaplansky and Dar Wiliams (all successful solo singer-songwriters) may take you back to the glory days of Crosby, Stills & Nash with their delicate, intricate harmonies and earthy folk-rock arrangements. Putting their solo projects on hold for a moment, the three decided to collaborate on this project in tribute to ...
| | Richard Shindell Courier Live CD (2002)
Blue Divide songs
$13.89 Though he's never become a star, Richard Shindell has quietly made a name for himself over the years in the folk/singer-songwriter world. Coming out of the New York City songwriting school of hard knocks, Shindell crafted a sound that owes to Stan Rogers, John Gorka, and Leonard Cohen, without ever becoming imitative. On his first live album, backed by a small-but-powerful band, Shindell's songs come alive even more than on the studio albums from which they originated.
The title tune, inspired by Wilfrid Owen's WWI poetry, tells a grim tale of wartime tribulations with elegance and power. "The Kenworth of my Dreams" takes the country convention of a trucking song and twists it smartly by the ear. "Fishing" is one side of a conversation between an INS agent and an immigrant; there's no other song like ...
| | Richard Shindell Vuelta CD (2004)
Blue Divide album
$14.45 When Richard Shindell moved to Buenos Aires in 2000, it seemed logical that his next set of songs would reflect the sights, sounds, and culture of his new home. With each new experience or discovery, it must have been tempting for Shindell to incorporate all those Latin flavors and influences into his songs and, basically, let the surroundings write the music. But with Vuelta he wisely avoids that mistake, and despite a few lyrical flourishes -- seashores, an immigrant, a Spanish lyric -- the music remains grounded in the land of American contemporary folk. Mostly recording in Buenos Aires with the fascinating Argentinean group Puente Celeste, Shindell smartly utilized the talent of the multi-instrumentalists by having them adapt to his style of music. Their enhancements give songs like "Fenario" a deep and complex sound that refrains from overwhelming this ...

Blue Divide CD music
$17.69 Though Richard Shindell's music has been categorized under the "folk" rubric, that label tells only part of the story. The instrumental skeletons of these songs are built upon plucked acoustic guitar and the lyrics sketch out a world-weary cast of characters ...
