| | Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan Greatest Hits Vol. 1 CD Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan Discography of CDs
These compositions are performed with the band of musicians and singers who backed him for years. The accompaniment is sparse, consisting mainly of harmonium, percussion (tablas and clapping), and a vocal chorus; the chorus often echoes Ali Khan in a kind of call and response. However, all this is only the springboard for Ali Khan's commanding vocals, which typically build in cyclical patterns to intense emotional peaks. Highlights include "Dat Ke Ghulamon Ko" and "Haq Ali Ali."
In the last quarter of the 20th century Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan became one of the most popular singers of the devotional music known as qawwali, and by the time of his death in 1997 had recorded hundreds of albums. In the 1980s his music began to be released internationally. He also began collaborating with various European musicians including Peter Gabriel and Michael Brook. Though all of this brought about experiments combining Western music with qawwali, on this greatest hits compilation material is drawn from Ali Khan's earlier career, before he started to attract audiences in Europe and the United States.
Personnel: Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan (vocals).

Greatest Hits Vol. 1
$21.59 The musical world mourned the passing of this great Pakistani musical legend, who died on August 16, 1997 in London. Nusrat was perhaps the best-known and greatest performer of Qawwali, a hypnotic, extremely emotional, often-riveting musical style. Qawwali is the devotional music of the Sufi sect of Islam. It is actually supposed to recreate, with sound, the bursts of enlightenment that accompany a message ...
| | Sarah Vaughan W/ Clifford Brown CD (1955)
Greatest Hits Vol. 1
$11.39 Recorded December 16 and 18, 1954, in New York. Originally released at Emarcy (36004). Includes liner notes by Michael Bourne.
This album joined the talents of legendary jazz singer Sarah Vaughan with those of 24-year-old wonder-trumpeter Clifford Brown for a December, 1954 released on Mercury Records subsidiary EmArcy. A warm and welcoming hiss washes over this album, giving it a graceful, familiar patina. One feels like a privileged listener let in on an intimate closed session.
Brown's playing is sharp and confident throughout, and at times even bears a bit of a racy, histrionic edge. But it is clearly Vaughan who steals the show in this set. The opening and closing strains of "Jim" demonstrate her peerless intonation, as her voice blends with the rest of the instruments to create a mellifluous whole. On "Lullaby of Birdland," Vaughan wallows ...

Greatest Hits Vol. 1
$17.15 Singer/composer Michael Gira's 1980s band Swans, with their considerable darkness/bleakness quotient, were perhaps the only outfit that could make Joy Division and Leonard Cohen sound practically jolly. Gira's Angels of Light project, however, is another matter entirely. While the Angels' music is still somewhat grim in lyrical content and vocal timbre, the overwhelmingly intense Swans-like approach has largely given way to a bittersweet melodic presentation. The autumnal, reflective tone is enhanced by Gira's neo-folk proteges Akron/Family, who serve as the backing band.
The title THE ANGELS OF LIGHT SING "OTHER PEOPLE" refers not to other songwriters, but rather songs about particular people who've inspired/affected Gira in one way or another. He must know some fascinating characters: "Michael's White Hands" is a tapestry of buzzing, jangling string instruments conveying a chant/rant about a disorienting parallel world, the likes of which the Doors' Jim Morrison used to visit. "To Live Through Someone" has a catchy lilt that recalls British Isles' folk music, and the sweetly sung background vocals provide a welcome contrast ...
