Michigan native Cathie Ryan used to sing for Cherish the Ladies, and the sound of her solo debut is, as she puts it, "Kerry and Tipperary with a Detroit accent." Many of the tunes, such as "Ned of the Hill" and the lovely "Garden Valley" are traditional Irish fare and are presented in a more or less traditional manner. But there's also a strong country influence at work here -- "White Dress" is a straight-ahead country waltz, and check out the drums and dobro on "Shades of Gloria." Ryan's voice is clear, rich and lovely, with no trace of affectation; she doesn't always sound completely comfortable singing in Gaelic, but she wears the songs themselves as comfortably as an old sweater, and delivers them with a winning sweetness. "The 12th of July" is perhaps a bit overwrought, and the country influence is more awkward than charming on "Eveline," but those are minor missteps and easily overlooked. Seamus Egan's excellent production skirts the edge of overdoing it, but always stays just on the right side of the line. Overall, this is a very promising debut from a major talent. ~ Rick Anderson

Cathie Ryan album
$14.49 Cathie Ryan's approach to traditional Irish song has always been to walk a fine line between the traditional and the modern, and this effort is no exception. Just over half of the songs on The Music of What Happens are contemporary compositions, some by Ryan herself and a couple of others by guitarist Gerry O'Beirne, while the others are freely adapted traditional songs. While Ryan's vocal approach is quite traditional, her arrangements make subtle use of exotic percussion, electric bass, and occasionally a drum set. The result sounds, in some cases, like a cross between Mary Black and Enya (note the multi-tracked backing vocals on "I'm Going Back"), but on the barely accompanied "Erin's Lovely Home" there is nothing to distract from either the crystalline loveliness of her voice or the mournful beauty of the song. Seamus Egan's production is, as always, perfectly suited to the artist's approach. ~ Rick Anderson

On her third outing after Cherish the Ladies, Cathie Ryan throws herself and the rest of her listening public a change-up by forgoing the talents of Seamus Egan's production talents in favor of John McCusker and the studios of New York for those of the Rusby family's in Yorkshire, England. Utilizing the talents of Kate Rusby (and engineer Joe), Phil Cunningham, John Doyle, Kris Drever, Iain MacDonald, Lester Simpson, Karine Polwart, and Martin Stitt, with Michael Aaron on Hammond B-3 on Luka Bloom's "Wave up to the Shore." Ryan moves deeper into the modern folk tradition on this recording. She's less exotic in her writing and interpretation, exploring British folk as well as the more familiar haunts of her ancestral and modern Celtic lineages on tracks like "Rathlin Island (1847)" and the heartbreakingly beautiful "Somewhere Along the Road." But before any jump to the erroneous conclusion that Ryan's abandoned her rootsy Celtic trademark, one listen to the wooly and sensual "Raking and Rouging" Gaelic suite, which pairs a couple of trad tunes in a haunting, steamy tangle, or the mysterious "Tá Sé 'na Lá." The disc closes with Bloom's moving, youthful paean to the movement of nature and life (he was only 16 when he wrote it) and Alan A. Bell's truly moving "So Here's ...

Quite possibly the only electric blues/rock guitarist to come near rivalling Jimi Hendrix, Vaughan, who, like Hendrix, died tragically, was so good he was ridiculous. He was lacking in really good material, and his own compositions were mainly guitar workouts, such as "Rude Mood," although he shows great feeling on the instrumental "Lenny." He is much more comfortable singing non-originals, and on this album he covers Buddy Guy's "Mary Had A Little Lamb" and Howlin Wolf's "Tell Me," but the listener is still waiting for the bit where the guitar solo comes in. Poor Double Trouble barely get a look in.
It's hard to overestimate the impact Stevie Ray Vaughan's debut, Texas Flood, had upon its release in 1983. At that point, blues was no longer hip, the way it was in the '60s. Texas Flood changed all that, climbing into the Top 40 and spending over half-a-year on the charts, which was practically unheard of for a blues recording. Vaughan became a genuine star and, in doing so, sparked a revitalization of the blues. This was a monumental impact, but his critics claimed that, no matter how prodigious Vaughan's instrumental talents were, he didn't forge a distinctive voice; instead, he wore his influences on his sleeve, whether it was Albert King's pinched yet muscular soloing or Larry Davis' emotive singing. There's a certain element of truth in that, but that was sort of the point of Texas Flood. Vaughan didn't hide his influences; he celebrated them, pumping fresh blood into a familiar genre. When Vaughan and Double Trouble cut the album over the course of three days in 1982, he had already played his set lists countless times; he knew how to turn this material inside out or goose it up for maximum impact. The album is paced like a club show, kicking off with Vaughan's two best self-penned songs, "Love Struck Baby" and "Pride and Joy," then settling into a pair of covers, the slow-burning title track and an exciting read of Howlin' Wolf's "Tell Me," before building to the climax of "Dirty Pool" and "I'm Crying." Vaughan caps the entire thing with "Lenny," ...

Cathie Ryan music CDs
$9.59 On their first USA tour Handsome 3some fulfilled the expectations of both dutch journalists and other music business people : this is "a band that will be capable of reaching across our national borders." Playing the Rockrgrl Conference in Seattle as their very first USA gig, Handsome 3some certainly knew how to impress the crowd with their powerful music and original approach of alternative rock, mixed with dance samples. Next day guitar player/singer Arjo was instantly asked to join a Conference panel about Grls and Guitars. The first two indie releases from Handsome 3some were their EP's, "Cute Grrls" (January '98), and "Fallen Out of Space" (November '98). "Fallen Out of Space" generated much airplay on national radio stations with the powerful song "I". This exposure earned them a chart position in the Dutch Cyber Top 50, as well as many encouraging reviews, and the band soon signed deals with EMI Music Holland and EMI Music Publishing. After years of playing together (Handsome 3some started in 1994), the band has slowly crafted its sound into the present powerful blend of guitar rock with dance influences. January 2002 Steven replaced bassist Matto. His love for wicked bass synth sounds adds more to Handsome 3some's search for this perfect blend. In May 1999, the band released their first official single with video; "Do It Again". This song is also featured as the title song in the European movie "The Delivery" (Warner Brothers). The film was released worldwide by Tristar Films, following an exciting debut at Cannes last year. The director of the film, Roel Reine, also chose Handsome 3some's "Inside of Me" to be an important theme in the movie. In the summer of '99, Handsome 3some was asked to play one of the biggest and most important festivals in the Netherlands; 'Lowlands', along with bands like Gang Starr, Suede, Atari Teenage Riot, Public Enemy, Hepcat, Kula Shaker, Chemical Brothers, andBiohazard. Handsome 3some's debut album, "Listen.to/handsome3some" was released in June '99, followed by their most recent single, "Drag 'n' Bass". Clearly, it's a totally new sound for a totally new century in Pop music. With "QUAB", released November 2000,Handsome 3some merges the forceful kick of dance music with haunting, melodic guitar rock.In addition to Reyn Ouwehand (their producer and the guy responsible for a lot of 'non-analog' noise on the record), Handsome 3some worked with Attie Bauw (engineering and mixing -- and known for his work with Scorpions, ...
