Sail Og Rua
$9.85 DEEP RIVER is an electrifying album by one of the leading exponents of traditional black gospel music. The Five Blind Boys are an updated incarnation of a long-standing Alabama quintet, now led by the impassioned vocals of Clarence Fountain. And though their music features zealous attempts to bring new recruits to Jesus, their amalgam of traditional and modern Gospel vocal styles will seem wondrous to even the most secular-minded listeners.
Using their deep, rich harmonies, the Blind Boys show their hand at a variety of musical styles. There are tambourine-led spirituals ("Brother Moses"), the blues ("Reminiscing"), and classic R&B ("I've Got The Love Of Jesus"), with most tracks featuring the soulful articulate organ of Booker T. Jones. They even include a deeply textured, well-controlled rave-up version ...

Louis Armstrong was perhaps the first true star of jazz--he was known around the world for his live performances and through countless recordings and films. He was a virtuoso trumpeter and a hearty, growly-voiced singer who influenced innumerable jazz and pop music performers. By the mid-'50s, when these tracks were recorded, Armstrong had elevated to grand elder statesman status. Many critics thought his best work (in the '20s and '30s) was behind him, but that notion didn't impact his many fans. He was a popular concert draw, and could still generate sparks that would let the good times roll. Here, Armstrong is joined by a band that's as good a fit as a pair of favorite shoes. Ed Hall (clarinet) and ...
| | Neal Hellman Autumn In The Valley CD (1994)
Sail Og Rua
$12.89 Autumn In the Valley offers an irresistable collection of upbeat old-timey favorites from Appalachia. Enjoy folk and classical treasures on a warm weave of mountain and hammered dulcimer, guitar, cello, violin, flute, harp, banjo, mandolin and more. Also, hauntingly beautiful Celtic airs and a delightful sprinkling of classical arrangements from Mozart to Ravel, plus a new crop of Hellman originals. Guest artists include Gourd favorites Joe Weed, Barry and Shelley Phillips, Robin Petrie and William Coulter. ~ MusD
Neal was raised on an island, the one thatoccupies the space between Brooklyn and New Jersey. His primary music experience was via the folk boom of the early 60's. His early heroes included Tom Rush, Eric Anderson, Phil Ochs, and his favorite, Judy Collins. It was through the music of Judy Collins that Neal experienced his primary dulcimer epiphany while hearing Richard Fariña play "Pack Up Your Sorrows" on Judy Collins' fifth album. Neal and the dulcimer kept running into each other during his "searching years" in the early 70's. From apple picking in New Hampshire to his communal experience in Virginia, the dulcimer and Mr. Hellman were constantly encountering each other. Neal realized that the dulcimer was to play a major role in his existence and he soon purchased one from Ed Presnell in Banner Elk, North Carolina.Neal found his first dulcimer mentor in Vancouver, British Columbia. It was the inspired teaching of John Prisland that led Neal to write his first book, "Life Is Like a Mountain Dulcimer," which was transcribed in colored pencil in a hiker's cabin in Squamish, B.C. His dulcimer muse then led him back to the city of his birth where The Richmond Organization published said book in 1974.Great minds think alike, and soon Neal was enjoying the company of fellow dulcimer zealots Robert Force, Al d'Ossché, Bonnie Carol, and Michael Rugg. This collaboration led to the benchmark dulcimer recording "The Pacific Rim Dulcimer Project" and the fun-filled "Kindred Gathering Dulcimer Festivals."Neal then hit the dulcimer trail and toured extensively between 1981 and 1989, spreading his dulcimer light as far as the European continent in 1984. During this time, Neal published dulcimer books for Music Sales, Hal Leonard, and Mel Bay Publications. In 1987 Neal started his own record label, Gourd Music. As founder, director, and a primary artist of Gourd Music, Neal has produced ...

| | Country & West Coast - The Birth Of Country Rock CD (2006)
Sail Og Rua
$14.75 The 1996 Rhino CD compilation Heroes of Country Music, Vol. 5: Legends of Country Rock is usually regarded as the best various-artists anthology of country-rock from the late '60s and early '70s, though it was unable to license material by a few of the genre's more notable innovators. While the songs on this 24-track collection are generally less known (and sometimes downright obscure), Country & West Coast: The Birth of Country Rock might actually serve as a better examination of how the style originated, both due to its greater length and the fine quality of the selections. Certainly, many of country-rock's leading lights are represented, including ...
