Some traditional Irish groups, such as the Chieftains, focus on instrumental music, while others such as the Clancy Brothers focus almost exclusively on singing. Planxty strove for a balance between voice and instrument. Thanks mostly to the brilliant Uilleann piper Liam O'Flynn, in their '70s heyday the band appealed to both purists and casual listeners.
THE WELL BELOW THE VALLEY displays the subtleties of the group's music, as well as their wonderful ability to wail on traditional reels, jigs, hornpipes, and slip-jigs. The former is epitomized by their rendition of "Pat Reilly," and the latter is best evidenced by their versions of the reels "The Dogs Among the Bushes" and "Jenny's Wedding," which are played as a medley. A strongly traditional album, THE WELL BELOW THE VALLEY is probably Planxty's most compelling release. Planxty Well Below The Valley Songs Well Below The Valley Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) Planxty - A Remarkable Sound Planxty's work comprises one of the earlier attempts to blend traditional Irish music with more modern instrumentation and influences.
I personally believe that the best approach to the traditional music (of any genre, but particularly Celtic) is to play and sing it the way the tradition-bearers do.
Thus, I am not happy about the inclusion of
some pieces and settings that are not from the tradition, although I understand the muscian's right to artistic freedom.
However, Planxty's sound remained truer to the tradition in many respects than any group since, and is far preferable (to me, at any rate) than other modern groups and sounds.
They didn't inject too much rock, jazz, or other inappropriate forms (and this is a matter that would require a book to discuss, so those who disagree are free to do so.)
Where they did inject other genre, it was often the Balkan influence, picked up by Andy Irvine while traveling there. While not strictly "Irish traditional", at least that form has more relevance to Celtic music than other genre commonly tossed in hodge-podge. (As does, interestingly, some African forms, such as the griot bards of the Mandingo, and some Indian and Native American music.)
In addition, Irvine, Donal Lunny, Liam O Floinn, and Christy Moore are talented musicicans, whose technical expertise is truly amazing.
I rate O Floinn to be one of the finest pipers I have ever heard. (I go back over 40 years in Irish and Scottish traditional music, and have heard, learned from, and played with some of the best.)
This, as with any Planxty recording, is a great chance to hear some excellent music, played by top-notch musicians. I recommend to it to all who are interested in this genre, or who merely appreciate good music. Submitted by a reviewer (OR, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 1 found this helpful.

| | Deitrick Haddon Crossroads CD (2004)
Well Below The Valley CD music
$8.89 Gospel meets hip-hop in the shape of Detroit artist Deitrick Haddon's CROSSROADS, which, in addition to some fine worship music, boasts some slamming beats, from the bubbling rhythms of "7-Ds" to the Earth, Wind & Fire-like "U.N.I.T.Y." Haddon's smoothly assured vocals bring an Usher-like urgency to the redemptive "It's Over Now," while things take a more traditional turn on the majestic "God Didn't Give Up." Haddon is joined by Contemporary Christian music pioneer Reverend Rance Allen on "Had Not Been," which, in its old-school approach, recalls the Reverend Allen's roots as a Stax recording artist. Pastor and self-help guru Paula White assists with a few inspirational words on the Caribbean-inflected "Walls Are Tumbling." CROSSROADS is a soul-stirring mix of traditional gospel and urban R&B that adds to Grammy-winner Haddon's reputation as one of gospel's most talented performers.

$14.29 This mostly instrumental live set features a variety of musical sketches for material released later in Frank Zappa's career, such as "Greggery Peccary" and "Bebop Tango." Led by a six-piece horn section, the material tends toward jazz-rock improvisation, with Zappa at one point taking musical direction from the audience. Unexpectedly dynamic and vibrant-sounding, this set is a fascinating example of the composer at his most creative and entertaining.
