Though it still contains the rock influence that permeates all the band's work, 1972's BELOW THE SALT is one of Steeleye Span's most traditional folk albums. This is a folkie's delight, containing excellent, thoughtful interpretations of eight classic English folk tunes chosen with a historian's eye and a fan's heart by singers Maddy Prior and Tim Hart, plus a dazzling pair of spirited jigs, "The Bride's Favourite" and "Tansey's Fancy," starring fiddler Peter Knight.
The spellbinding "Gaudette," an unaccompanied vocal hymn, is the album's most stunning track, but a simple version of the standard "John Barleycorn" sung by Hart--which simply shred's Traffic's contemporaneous version--is nearly as excellent. Prior's best showcase is the closing "Saucy Sailor," which remained a stage favorite for decades. The modest album title refers to the servants' place at table during medieval times, but at this time, Steeleye Span was second only to Fairport Convention in the world of British folk-rock.Rolling Stone (1/18/73, p.54) - "...polished, authentic sounding..." Steeleye Span Below The Salt Songs Below The Salt Music Review Average Rating: (4.3 out of 5 stars) Below the Salt The title refers to a heirarchy (much like below the stairs). Again here Steeleye Span update traditional folk songs to a more modern treatment while retaining the original feel. Another of my favourite albums, bought many years ago on LP, so a delight to have in this format too. Submitted by mindimoo1 (Brisbane, Australia) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Not Below anything This 4th album by the "Span" marks the entry of Bob Johnson & Rick Kemp on electric guitar & bass respectively. From here on out the "Span" would move in a decidedly more "Rock" direction from their beginnings in electric folk. Their song selection would shift more in the direction of hard-core "hanging Ballads" rather than the melancholic "lost lover" themes found in their earlier work, even though this element would always remain, being as it's native to the genre. hee hee
Most notable is the powerful musical arrangement of the song "King Henry", which presaged the stunning uniqueness of their music, which can be found nowhere else in pop, rock , folk , or world music. This album and their next three constitute and incredible body of work, not only in the selection of songs, instruments, vocal arrangements AND recording techniques, but in the overall projection of the "celtic" spirit and soul.
The wide range of styles , from pure folk to very hard rock, to Gregorian-style chant, to lively instrumental jigging showcase the active pursuit of this group of musicians to break new ground and still maintain fond "groundings" in the past and present. $15.19 Dialektix, the Denver based hip-hop group, has continued to grow and expand in the vast hip-hop community for more than four years. Keeping their foundation based in the purity of emceeing, turntablism, and musically raw beats, this group delivers what is missing in much of today's hip-hop. The trio - emcees Mest-one and Jarvis plus deejay Square - is not afraid to re-introduce the words "performance," "truth," and "fun" into a hip-hop fan's vocabulary. Focusing on production for a live arena, Dialektix keeps their performance tight, beats live and delivers lyrics with a commanding presence.Hailing from different parts of the country, the members of Dialektix have found a home in Denver and a bond in their shared ideals of what hip-hop should be. From Tulsa, Oklahoma, Jarvis brings -a unique style of poetic lyricism. His mind-bending rhymes blend spoken word poems and obscure metaphors into a very soulful hip-hop deliverance that makes you think. The other half of the emcee duo, Mest-one from Boulder, Colorado, lends his rhymes as well as his beat production to the team. Mest-one's straight forward and often brazen approach to his lyrics and beats grabs listeners by their ears while expressing exactly what 's on his mind. Deejay Square from Charlotte, North Carolina, contributes his top-flight turntable skills to the group. His stage experience enhances performances, production, and adds what we think is essential in today's hip-hop-a deejay! The members of Dialektix may come from different backgrounds, ...

$18.99 A native Detroiter born in 1972, Tomeka Nicole - affectionately known as Nikki - began her singing career at the tender age of 5. Like many other musical performers, Nikki’s roots lie in her home church back in the early 80’s where she sang and directed the choir until she moved to Atlanta in 1995. Musically, Nikki has surprised many audiences with the size and quality of her sound. She has so much versatility in her voice, which can change styles starting with gospel, then jazz, to blues, then R & B, to neo soul. Vocally, she’s been compared to such artists as Stephanie Mills, Patti LaBelle, Aretha Franklin, Vicki Winans, Vanessa Bell Armstrong, and Nancy Wilson. Currently, Nikki is recording her freshman solo project entitled “A Different Kinda ...
