The biggest selling of all Steeleye Span albums is also their hardest rocking record. They sound like would-be competitors to the Who on the opening bars of "The Wife of Usher's Well," with Bob Johnson's electric guitar grinding out power chords like nobody's business. The vocals have their usual elegance, the harmonies soaring exquisitely, but between the choruses the guitar puts out lots of wattage. The guitar competes with Maddy Prior's voice for dominance on tracks like "Hard Times of Old England," "Bachelor's Hall," and "Dance with Me." There's some more traditional-sounding material here, including the lovely "Cadgwith Anthem" and "Gamble Gold (Robin Hood)," where the group returns to acoustic instruments. A single of the upbeat title track also made the charts in England, and the overall sound was the work of producer Mike Batt, who gave the band a raw, stripped-down style, with only the smallest touching up and the very lightest of overdubbed strings. ~ Bruce Eder Steeleye Span's eighth album, 1975's ALL AROUND MY HAT, is a fan favorite, up there with PLEASE TO SEE THE KING as one of the band's most beloved records. It's a superlative piece of folk-rock, where both halves of that genre come into equal play. Produced by Mike Batt, best known for his bubblegum singles with British children's show stars The Wombles, the results, while undeniably commercial--several songs have orchestral strings and brass supporting the fiddles--are crisp and inviting. It's not surprising that this is Steeleye Span's best-selling album. Besides the lovely title track, highlights include an excellent version of the standard "Black Jack Davy," the gloomy "Hard Times of Old England" and the beautiful, unaccompanied "Cadgwith Anthem." If you're a pop fan with little knowledge of English folk music, this may be Steeleye Span's most immediately accessible and rewarding album.Q (2/93, p.92) - 3 Stars - Good - "...possibly the most commercial British folk/rock album ever...there are enough pleasant tunes, cheering rhythms and inspiring harmonies here to please everyone..." Steeleye Span All Around My Hat Songs All Around My Hat Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) A Classic! I found this album with my dad's record collection, and I decided to listen to it-it looked interesting just because of the album cover. I have to say, this is an excellent collection of English folk-rock music, and I was truly impressed, and I would highly recommend this record to anyone who likes catchy melodies, or just in general for example. Listen to the record! Submitted by Jason (Cottage Grove, MN, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
(fond) Memories of England In 1975, as a grad student, I visited London for the first time. A local recommended "All Around My Hat" and I bought a copy having never heard anything from it. It has become one of my favorite albums; the combination (or alternation) of current sound with old England music is wonderful. And, it also reminds me of that 1st trip to London. $14.29 The most successful of all Steeleye Span lineups, with Bob Johnson and Rick Kemp in place of Martin Carthy and Ashley Hutchings, makes its debut on what could be their best album. There's not a weak note here, and all of its has a harder, more muscular sound courtesy ...

All Around My Hat
$18.05 As Roses Bow: Collected Airs 1992-2002 is Loren Connors' assembly of his most melodically rich and stunning miniature compositions. Inspired by O'Carolan's airs and other Irish airs of the past, these works, recorded during a ten year period, are melded with the distinctly personal and iconoclast adaptation of Connors' blues. These 43 pieces are Connors' complete airs, culled from 10 albums (eight of which are out of print) and one single, including his groundbreaking Hell's Kitchen Park (Black Label, 1993), Moonyean (Road Cone, 1994), as well as obscure titles like St. Vincent's Newsboy Home (Item Recordings, 1998) and Lullaby (Carbon, 2001) plus four unreleased airs.
Personnel: Loren Mazzacane Connors (electric guitar); Suzanne Langille (vocals). Additional personnel: Suzanne Langille. Audio Remasterers: David Daniell; Jim O'Rourke. Liner Note Author: Loren Mazzacane Connors. Recording information: 1992-2002. The Family Vineyard label, which has done consistently great work with reissues of little known and cult figures, has certainly taken the macro-view when it comes to the accumulated work of guitarist Loren MazzaCane Connors. After Ecstatic Yod issued the massive four-disc box set of Unaccompanied Acoustic Guitar Improvisations, Vols. 1-9: 1979-1980 in 1999, the door was open to focus on his other work, which is, admittedly, voluminous. First FV released the brilliantly compiled Night Through: Singles and Collected Works 1976-2004 in 2006. In 2007, they decided to focus more thematically by releasing this gorgeous double-disc set, mysteriously titled As Roses Bow: Collected Airs 1992-2002. The term "airs," when used as a verb, especially in relation to music, is defined as a solo, a song, or an aria. There are 43 such pieces here, considered by Connors to be his complete airs. Tracks are culled from recordings originally issued on different labels and albums, as well as singles, split singles, and even four previously unissued airs; they appeared on everything from Moonyean from Road Cone, Evangeline, ...
