The opening medley on TO WELCOME PADDY HOME, an amalgam of four highland jigs and reels, heads off this collection in the manner Boys of the Lough fans have come to expect. Celtic folk music, played with verve and a deep respect for tradition, has been the keep of this ensemble (who, in this incarnation, hail from Ireland, Northumberland, and Shetland) since the early '70s.
TO WELCOME expands the sound of those early albums by adding Uillean pipes, harmonica, and concertina to their usual instrumentation of fiddle, mandolin, guitar, flutes, and whistles. Plaintive airs, like the title track and "Miss Rowan Davies," alternate with waltzes, marches, hornpipes, and a host of speedy, looping reels, such as the medley "The Antrim Rose/Miss McGuinness/Brereton's." Irish guitarist and pianist John Coakley replaced late band member Tich Richardson here, and the band sounds as cohesive and polished as ever. Strong material, sprightly energy, and top-drawer musicianship make TO WELCOME PADDY HOME another fine addition to The Boys' long discography.
Recorded at Castle Sound Studios, Pencaitland, East Lothian, Scotland.
Boys Of The Lough: Cathal McDonnell (vocals, flute, whistle); Christy O'Leary (vocals, Uillean pipes, whistle, harmonica); John Coakley (guitar, piano); Dave Richardson (cittern, mandolin, tenor banjo, concertina); Aly Bain (fiddle).
Producers: Peter Harris, Boys Of The Lough.

To Welcome Paddy Home
$15.39 With its roots in the traditional sound of De Danaan, Arcady waited four years after their debut to release Many Happy Returns, and a happy return it is indeed. With its focused Irish approach, relaxed and sparkling musicianship, this is an album that stands as an unalloyed joy, and a benchmark of Irish music amid all the "Celticisms" that have abounded. In vocalist Niamh Parsons, the band discovered an astonishing talent, with a warm, slightly husky voice strongly reminiscent of Sandy Denny. Her rendition of "The Rocks of Bawn" is nothing less than quietly glorious, and even the bed of synthesizer tones fails to sound cheap and cheesy underneath. The six-piece group is heavily augmented, ...

| | Susan McKeown Bushes & Briars CD (1998)
To Welcome Paddy Home
$8.75 Irish-born, New York-based Susan McKeown is a singer/songwriter based in Irish folk and Gaelic history/tradition. While some interpret the more traditional (and more boisterous, in some cases) aspects of Irish music, McKeown mixes elements of jazz, Indian and North African music and the atmospheric, cosmopolitan sounds of Peter Gabriel, Laurie Anderson and Dead Can Dance into her sonic Irish stew. Her singing is melodious yet bittersweet in the vein of Delores Keane and Sandy Denny--sounding forever young and eons wise at the same time.
BUSHES & BRIARS features instrumental contributions from a diverse cast of characters--jazz players Chris Speed and John Clark, as well as Irish folk pros Andy Irvine and Seamus Egan (the latter from the fine group Solas). If you like Enya or Clannad but find them too understated and airy, or if you wish Dead Can Dance did a Celtic album, check out BUSHES & BRIARS.
Recorded at D.K. USA Studios and PotaPota Studio, New York, New York. Includes liner notes by Susan McKeown, Cynthia Pierce and Tess Mangum.
Engineers: Scott Noll, Dan DiPaola, Eric Helmuth.
Personnel: Susan McKeown (vocals); Hassan Hakmoun (vocals); Seamus Egan (whistling, flute, bodhran); Greg Anderson (guitar, cittern); Larry Campbell (guitar); Skúli Sverrisson (E-bow); Tom Zajac (hurdy-gurdy); Akira Satake (mandocello); ...
