Recorded in 1991 during Maddy Prior's final tour with the British folk-rock supergroup, TONIGHT'S THE NIGHT is one of the finest of the several Steeleye Span live records. Recorded with a simple five-person lineup of Prior, guitarist Bob Johnson, fiddler Peter Knight, bassist Tim Harries and fabulously-named drummer Liam Genockey, the arrangements are neither as traditional and spartan as some Steeleye Span records have been--see 1971's TEN MAN MOP--nor as rock-oriented as others, such as 1975's ALL AROUND MY HAT, whose wonderful title track is given a simply gorgeous reinterpretation here. The rest of the dozen tunes span all of Steeleye's Span's previous 16 albums from the last 21 years.
Audio Remasterer: Robert Vosgien.
Steeleye Span includes: Maddy Prior (vocals); Peter Knight, Bob Johnson.
Audio Mixer: John Etchells.

| Tonight's The Night, Live! Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) This is NOT Steely Dan!! NO Way!! Steeleye Span has been an integral part of my listening for many years, and this live recording is just great. As is usual with live recordings you get somewhat different takes on the studio recordings, and this merely adds a different seasoning to the feast. If you don't know Steeleye Span and you do like folk music and particularly the English Child Ballads, then you should know this group. Arrangements of such traditional songs such as "Cam ye o'r fra' France" and "Ca the Ewes" played on electric guitar, tabor, spoons, organ, dulcimer, banjo, mandolin, fiddle, timpani, and bass will knock you over with how easily traditional music fits with a modern sonic venue. The group also writes and composes some of the tunes in a style so fitting to the 16th-18th centuries in English music that I've had to scramble for the cover to discover where the piece originated! Tuneful, wonderful playing which is topped off by the utterly fantastic voice of Maddy Prior (I think her voice is like Jussi Bjorling's and Iris Dement's...you will either love it or hate it depending on your ear). Maddy's voice is penetrating and strong, and with the right lilt for these pieces. And Tim Hart also sings many of the pieces in a strong lower tenor voice which is delightful...you should acquaint yourself with this music, I believe you will want more! Fantastic live performances I had this album on cassette for years and finally had the opportunity to get it on CD. Much rejoicing and singing along to music I thought I had lost forever. Unable to purchase this in New Zealand, I was very impressed by the quick dispatch of CD universe. Thank you for bringing an old friend back. | | Toby Keith American Ride CD (2009)
Tonight's The Night, Live! album
$11.99 With most contemporary country artists, you could guarantee that a song called "American Ride" would be a slice of jingoism, but Toby Keith isn't like most country singers. His "American Ride" casts a cynical eye at desperate housewives and wannabe pop stars, not celebrating down-home values but wondering where we're all headed on this American Ride at the end of the 2000s, a sentiment not all that far removed from some of Keith's previous social commentary, which makes it a mild surprise that it is the only song here that doesn't come from his own pen. As superb and striking as it is, it's not necessarily a good keystone for the rest of the record, which does have a few tougher numbers that pick up on the lean, mean vibe of 2008's THAT DON'T ...
