Vanguard's Best of Joan Baez is a solid, if brief, collection that features a handful of her best-known songs -- "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down," "There But for Fortune, " "I Am a Poor Wayfaring Stranger, " "Joe Hill, " "Silver Dagger, " "Pack up Your Sorrows, " "We Shall Overcome" -- but it leaves just as many off the disc. It's not a definitive collection, but it is an enjoyable introduction to her career. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Vanguard's Best of Joan Baez is a solid, if brief, collection that features a handful of her best-known songs -- "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down," "There But for Fortune," "I Am a Poor Wayfaring Stranger," "Joe Hill," "Silver Dagger," "Pack up Your Sorrows," "We Shall Overcome" -- but it leaves just as many off the disc. It's a serviceable, but hardly definitive, introduction to her career, and there are far better collections on the marketplace. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine Best Of Joan Baez Music Review Purchase Best Of Joan Baez CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Bill Evans Intuition CD (1974)

| | Miles Davis Kind Of Blue CD (1959) Bonus Track; Remastered
Best Of Joan Baez CD music
$6.25 With BIRTH OF THE COOL, Miles Davis distilled a new tonal palette for jazz. As early as 1954, Miles reacted to the escalating chordal complexity of hard bop by fashioning an evocative blues based on a simple scalar pattern ("Swing Spring"). KIND OF BLUE was the ultimate fulfillment of this approach, with Miles providing his collaborators little more than outlines for melodies and simple scales for improvisation. By emphasizing the blues and the improvisor's melodic gifts, KIND OF BLUE precipitated a major stylistic development--modal jazz.
Charles Mingus had experimented with pedal points throughout the 1950s, and the melodic freedom of Ornette Coleman's Atlantic sides was also predicated on freedom from chord changes. But KIND OF BLUE was to prove the most influential, enduring work of its kind. There was just such a vibe about these 1959 sessions--Miles' ...
| | Best Of Fourplay CD (1997)
Best Of Joan Baez music CDs
$6.19 What looked at first like a premature marketing ploy -- a greatest-hits collection after only three albums? -- now makes some historical sense, for founding member Lee Ritenour left the quartet not long after the CD's release. So this is in essence a summary of Fourplay's first edition, a collection ...

| | Chad Mitchell Trio Arrives CD (1960)
Best Of Joan Baez music CDs
$11.59 The Chad Mitchell Trio would subsequently do better work than what's represented on this album, but Trio Arrives was the first full-length (well, 28 minutes) release by the group, cut immediately after the trio's Carnegie Hall appearance with Harry Belafonte. Milt Okun and Henry Krasnow produced this recording, supposedly cut at a New York club but showing no special room ambience and definitely no audience, and also displaying some studio contrivance. The singing is pretty enough, as are many of the songs ("Paddy West"), and the performances are very ...

Best Of Joan Baez music CDs
$13.19 It's easy to wonder what exactly has taken place behind the scenes when a band goes from the Wildwood Valley Boys to Tony Holt & the Wildwood Valley Boys. To emphasize the change, singer Holt is front and center on the cover photo, with the "boys" comfortably behind him. In fact, they're further behind him than they would be on a stage. Luckily, whatever led to these changes doesn't seem to have affected the quality of the band's music. Tenor Aubrey Holt, arguably just as central to the band's success, has written eight of the album's 12 songs, and the rest of the band, fiddler Evan McGregor, mandolinist Jake ...
