| | Judy Collins Live At Newport CD Judy Collins Discography of CDs
One of the clear standouts of the extensive LIVE AT NEWPORT series recorded at the legendary Newport Folk Festival throughout the '60s, JUDY COLLINS LIVE AT NEWPORT is also one of the finest documents there is of a masterful singer during an under-appreciated phase of her career. In retrospect, it can be hard to realize how refreshing Judy Collins' deep, clear, yet conversational voice was to the early '60s folk scene.
Judy Collins could take the hoariest of traditional ballads or most-covered hootenanny standard and make it sound brand new, something she does over and over again on this 14 track collection of live performances recorded between 1959 and 1966. If all you know of the Collins oeuvre is "Send in the Clowns," prepare to be amazed.
Recorded live at the Newport Folk Festival in Newport, Rhode Island between 1959 and 1966. Includes liner notes by Mary Katherine Aldin.
This is part of the Newport Folk Festival Classics series.
Personnel: Judy Collins (vocals, guitar); Theodore Bikel (vocals); Steve Mandell, Eric Weissberg (guitar); Bill Lee (acoustic bass).

| | Joan Baez Live At Newport CD (1996)
Live At Newport CD music
$15.05 Recorded live at the 1963, 1964 & 1965 Newport Folk Festivals, Newport, Rhode Island. Includes liner notes by Charles J. Fuss.
This album draws tracks from Joan Baez's appearances at the 1963, 1964, and 1965 Newport Folk Festivals, a time period in which she was the very epicenter of the folk scene. With her clear, strong, and bell-like soprano, Baez brought together traditional-folk materials with some of the best songs of the then-emerging songwriters of the so-called folk revival (she was the introduction for many to the work of Bob Dylan, Phil Ochs, Richard Fariña, and others), projecting a thematic unity between the old and the ...

Ella Fitzgerald & Billie Holiday at Newport presents the naturally intriguing results when Verve paired two sets recorded two days apart (over the 4th of July weekend, 1957) by the two best female singers of the 20th century. Unfortunately, circumstances weren't in their favor, as the combined factors of an unsympathetic band (for Fitzgerald) and shaky health (for Holiday) make these sets just a step below the expected level of greatness. It's ...

| | Miles Davis At Newport 1958 CD (1958)
Live At Newport CD music
$9.79 Recorded live at the Newport Jazz Festival, Newport, Rhode Island on July 3, 1958. Includes liner notes by Bob Blumenthal.
Thanks to the research that went into the box set The Complete Miles Davis/John Coltrane Sessions there's a the definitive Newport 1958 date that features the debut live performances to the Miles Davis Sextet's two newest members: drummer Jimmy Cobb and pianist Bill Evans. The gig was part of a festival tribute to Duke Ellington, but that didn't stop Davis from showing off -- aggressively -- what his new band was capable of (six months later he would show the world when the band went to record Kind of Blue). This is a revelatory performance for fans of Evans. When Cobb kicks off into Charlie Parker's "Au-Leu-Cha," the tempo is breakneck. Davis' solo is all fire, pure heat, and inspiration. The melody goes by in a blink, and Cobb and Chambers carry the dictum to go faster as Davis gives way first to Coltrane, already ...
| | Brenda Lee Anthology Volumes 1 & 2 CDs (1991)
Live At Newport music CDs
$20.25 ANTHOLOGY, VOLUMES 1 & 2 is available on cassette as 2 separate volumes.
This collection is an excellent mixture of Brenda Lee's big pop hits and the more overtly country-oriented material that the Georgia native began recording in the late 1960s. The 40-track ANTHOLOGY VOLUMES 1 & 2 isn't complete--Lee had over 50 charting pop and country hits from 1960's "Sweet Nothin's" into the 1980s--but the two-disc set is well compiled and hits all of her high points. Though best known for "I'm Sorry" and "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree," Lee was a varied, sensitive singer, able to handle sorrowful ballads and sassy rockers with equal aplomb, approaching her material with a verve that belied her surprisingly young age. (Lee was only 11 when she recorded her first single.) The casual fan probably won't need anything beyond this collection, but those intrigued by these early blends of country ...
