The second of Vanguard's 2 studio LPs with James, first released in 1968 in the wake of his appearance at the 1964 Newport Folk Festival.

Skip James was rediscovered 33 years after his early landmark recordings, in time to appear at the 1964 Newport Folk Festival. He, in fact, became quite active between 1964 and 1966, making the music found here (his final record) three years before his death in 1969. One can easily hear the influence that James's sound had on the then flourishing folk revival movement, and though he's perhaps not in his prime on DEVIL GOT MY WOMAN, he still sings his country blues with great intensity.

Personnel: Skip James (vocals, guitar, piano).

Recording information: 03/22/1966/03/24/1966.Living Blues (5-6/91) - "Most well known as a guitarist but also skilled on the piano...His rhythms were complex and his playing could be so fast as to be unbelievable. His singing style made use of a haunting falsetto uncommon, but certainly not unheard of, in the blues...

Otis Rush Right Place, Wrong Time CD  (1976)

Devil Got My Woman
CD $11.39  Audio Samples
Recorded in San Francisco for Capitol Records in 1971 but not released until 1976 on Bullfrog. This recording session was not released until five years after it was done. One can imagine the tapes practically smoldering in their cases, the music is so hot. Sorry, there is nothing "wrong" about this blues album at all. Otis Rush was a great blues expander, a man whose guitar playing was in every molecule pure blues. On his solos on this album he strips the idea of the blues down to very simple gestures (i.e., a bent string, but bent in such a subtle way that the seasoned blues listener will be surprised). As a performer he opens up the blues form with his chord progressions and use of horn sections, the latter instrumentation again added in a wonderfully spare manner, bringing to mind a master painter working certain parts of a canvas in order to bring in more ...

Recorded in Memphis, Tennessee and Chicago, Illinois between 1951 and March 1959. Originally released on Chess (9195) in 1959. Includes original liner notes by Ralph Bass. Recorded in Chicago, Illinois between June 24, 1957 and May 1961. Originally released on Chess in 1962. Includes original liner notes by Paul Ackerman. Simply put, this disc is indispensable for anyone interested in blues, rock, or good music in general. One of the rare, genuine "deals" on record store shelves, this two-fer compiles Howlin' Wolf's first two full-length albums on one CD and offers twenty-two tracks of the man's absolute finest. These are the essential documents of the man who was the last word in electric Chicago blues--a unique and riveting performer whose voice could loose buildings from their foundations and remove skin from bone. Wolf's visceral impact ...

In accordance with their label's (and not the band's) wishes, the Pretties were teamed with a middle-aged orchestra directed by Reg Tilsley on this album, which saw the Phil May-Dick Taylor songwriting team making an effort to move beyond R&B knockoffs into more sophisticated territory. Sometimes the arrangements (dubbed onto tracks without much involvement from the group) worked; more often, they were an unnecessary hindrance. An interesting failure, it contained some genuinely top-rank originals that saw the group expanding their vision into social observation and tentative psychedelia, including "My Time," "The Sun," and especially the moody, folk-rock-ish "Death of a Socialite." ~ Richie Unterberger In accordance with their label's (and not the band's) wishes, the Pretty Things were teamed with a middle-aged orchestra directed by Reg Tilsley on Emotions, which saw the Phil May-Dick Taylor ...

Bluella: Ella Fitzgerald Sings The Blues CD  (1996)

Devil Got My Woman
CD $12.65  5 stars Audio Samples
Part of a Fantasy sampler series that features musicians (and in this case a notable vocalist) performing the blues, this CD features Ella Fitzgerald on 11 performances taken from a variety of sessions. Although she never specialized in the blues, Ella had no difficulty swinging over blues changes and sometimes putting strong emotion into the lowdown variety. There is one song apiece from the 1950s and '60s, while the remainder of the program dates from 1971-79. Ella's rendition of "C-Jam Blues" at the Santa Monica Civic in 1972 is a true classic, and other highlights include "Duke's Place" (with Duke Ellington's Orchestra in 1966), "I'm Walkin'," and the lengthy "Basiella," with Count Basie's big band. But the material is easily available in more complete form elsewhere, making this reissue a bit unnecessary. ~ Scott Yanow Part of a Fantasy sampler series that features musicians (and in this case a notable vocalist) performing the blues, this CD features Ella Fitzgerald on 11 performances taken from a variety of sessions. Man Of Colours
Icehouse Man Of Colours CD  (1987) (Import) Bonus Tracks; Remastered; Australia

Devil Got My Woman
CD $15.95  4.9 stars Top 500 Audio Samples
This album by the Australian New Wave band Icehouse includes "Crazy," "Electric Blue," and "My Obsession." On their fifth album, the smooth pop style of Australia's Icehouse is garnished with even more bouncy synthesizers and lavish melodies than their earlier work. Lead singer Iva Davies elaborated slant is immediately forthcoming in all the tunes on this album, but is truly the best working part behind the group. Man of Colours' first two tracks attached themselves to the Top 40, with "Crazy" peaking at number 17 in 1987 and "Electric Blue" reaching number seven in 1988, a song co-written by John Oates. After these two singles, the rest of the album becomes thin with keyboard -- crammed, syncopated rhythms jumping behind electric guitar that can barely be noticed. Even though the emphasis on keyboards is stereotypical of '80s pop, it's only after the third or fourth song that they grow overbearing, proving that they should have been used in moderate doses. Davies lyrics strain to be substantial, especially on "The Kingdom" and "Anybody's War," but fall short because of the meek support from the music enshrouding his polished voice. While the two singles are appealing, the rest of Man of Colours deems quite unnecessary. ~ Mike DeGagne On their fifth album, the smooth pop style of Australia's Icehouse is garnished with even ...
