The amusing album cover obscures the fact that this is a "live in the studio" album. Produced by ex-Lone Justice member Marvin Etzioni--who put out a pair of excellent, overlooked solo albums as Marvin the Mandolin Man around this time--SINGS LIKE HELL consists of Case on guitar and piano, Etzioni on mandolin, a violinist, a drummer and a bassist, bashing out 13 new Case songs which crackle with energy, wit, narrative sophistication and good old-fashioned rock & roll heart.
Even given the mostly acoustic lineup and the folk leanings of songs such as "Brokedown Engine" and "Waltz of the Angels," this music has passion and energy to burn. And of course, Peter Case...well, sings like hell. Highly recommended.
Recorded at Big Mono, Atwater, California.
Personnel: Peter Case (guitar, harmonica, piano); Marvin Etzioni (mandolin); Tammy Rogers (violin); Don Heffington, Michael Bannister (drums).

Alternative Press (8/94, p.74) - "...Peter Case helped create some of the best power-pop tunes ever....Employing a straightforward, less-affected singing style, he seems to be settling into his own folk voice..." Peter Case Sings Like Hell Songs Sings Like Hell Music Review Average Rating: (4 out of 5 stars) Great Title, Better Album Peter Case must have found the title of this album in Joe Walsh's garbage can (or maybe Ian Hunter, the man who gave us "You're Never Alone with a Schizophrenic"). The title itself almost makes you want to buy the album. This album almost sounds like a "demo" recording, with Case singing a number of old country standards (e.g., "Rose Conolly" was originally titled "Down in the Willow Garden" and recorded by Charlie Monroe in the 1940s, and "Waltz of the Angels", first a hit in the 1950s for Wynn Stewart) in the mix. But the "demo" feeling is not a bad thing. To the contrary, whereas a lot of artists sound "forced" when in the studio, Case seems to be having a great deal of fun on this project, and he invites you along for the ride. Don't turn down the invitation. Submitted by Karen (Louisville, KY) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

| | Tadd Dameron Magic Touch CD (1962)
Sings Like Hell music CDs
$9.65 Tadd Dameron is known to proclaim that he became an arranger rather than stay an exclusive instrumentalist because it was the only way he could get his music played. In retrospect, considering his best-known works are widely revered, few of them are frequently played by other bands, and only the finest musicians are able to properly interpret them. Dameron's charts had an ebb and flow that superseded the basic approach of Count Basie, yet were never as quite complicated as Duke Ellington. Coming up in the bop movement, Dameron's music had to have been by definition holding broader artistic harmonics, while allowing for the individuality of his bandmembers. The Magic Touch includes a handful of Dameron's most beloved compositions, as well as those that were more obscure, and have still never been covered. When you look at the sheer talent level of the players on this recording -- Clark Terry, Charlie Shavers, Joe Wilder, Jimmy Cleveland, Britt Woodman, Julius Watkins, Jerry Dodgion, ...
| | Elvis Presley Elvis' Gold Records, Vol. 4 CD (1968)
Sings Like Hell songs
$12.79 "Ain't That Loving You Baby" was recorded in 1958. The remainder of the singles compiles on ELVIS' GOLD RECORDS VOL 4 were recorded between 1960 and 1967.
Periodically throughout Presley's lifetime, RCA Records would compile Elvis' most recent best-selling records and release them on a GOLDEN RECORDS greatest hits package. VOLUME 4 is the fourth of five such records, covering Elvis' career between 1962 and 1966. Although many rock fans disparage Presley's work during these years--primarily because this era is identified with the King's many sub-par movie soundtrack albums--the recordings on VOLUME 4 stand alongside the best of Presley's work.
High points include a cover of Ray Charles' "What'd I Say," the impassioned R&B ballad "It Hurts Me," and the top five hit "You're the Devil in Disguise." The twelve-track CD version of GOLDEN RECORDS VOLUME 4 is a digitally remastered edition of the 1968 album. It was released in 1990 and is still in print; however, this title was also reissued in 1997 at a higher list price with improved liner notes, another round of digital remastering, and--most importantly--six additional tracks, all of which were big hits (among them "Return to Sender" and "Viva Las Vegas").
The fourth volume of Elvis' Gold Records was the first of his hits compilations to be issued at a point when Elvis Presley wasn't considered a very important rock & roll star anymore (a few months later, he would embark on his network television "comeback"). Indeed, it appeared at a point when it seemed, as Neal Umphred pointed out, "Elvis' gold was drained up and he was reduced ...

$10.15 After years on the shelf due to Mark Kozelek's drawn-out problems with Supreme and Island, the Red House Painters' long-awaited Old Ramon finally sees the light of day, thanks to Sub Pop. As it stands, the label needs Kozelek as much as he needs them -- after a few years' worth of disappointing releases from garage rock revivalists, Old Ramon breaks Sub Pop's losing streak. Ironically, the album's long-delayed release only makes its joyous sound that ...
