With a name like Sloppy Seconds, you get an idea of what the band is all about from the get go: irreverence, immaturity, and disregard for good taste. Sounds like a recipe for punk rock, and these were the ingredients for raw growlers on The First Seven Inches...And Then Some!, a 1987 reissue of the band's debut EP. Fueled with venom and cheap beer, this classic of failed anger management spewed clever lyrics skewering relationships, suicide, and even partying. An album, an EP, and six years later, Sloppy Seconds gave listeners Knock Yer Block Off, which has moments of the band's old gristle and spleen, but never quite delivers the goods. Like their earlier masterpiece, the songs here employ catchy up-tempo melodies in the tradition of the Ramones, but with more of a rock ...
| | Reagan Youth Collection Of Pop Classics CD (1994)
First Seven Inches...And Then Some! music CDs
$12.05 A Collection of Pop Classics could easily pass for a white supremacist album with its cover shot of guitar-toting Klansmen and song titles like "The New Aryans." Skinheads will be disappointed to find that the album cover, as well as the band's name, are actually deeply ironic commentaries ...
| | Briefs Sex Objects CD (2004)
First Seven Inches...And Then Some! songs
$11.65 The Briefs are intent on re-creating the shout-along choruses of earlier British punk bands like the Damned and the Sex Pistols, but with far more hooks in the vein of a tamer Dropkick Murphys. The quartet is very tight, having perfected the two-minute three-chord gems that sound like a band on the cusp of something grand. "Halfsize Girl" is a tad more angst-ridden, although the sneers and snarls are still audible. Another mini-rant, "Destroy the USA," ...

| | Quincy Jones Dude CD (1981)
First Seven Inches...And Then Some! music CDs
$8.49 An enormous commercial success, 1981's THE DUDE is a cross-cultural success blending jazz, Latin music, soul ballads, and straight pop into an admittedly slick but never over-produced or soulless stew. The album opens with a surprise; "Ai No Corrida" is a synthesizer-driven yet still funky Latin dance track written by Chaz Jankel of Ian Dury and the Blockheads, suggesting that unlike a lot of musicians his age, Quincy Jones kept his ears open to new music.
The proto-rap title track accomplishes the same thing. The rest of the album is more conventional, with James ...

First Seven Inches...And Then Some! songs
$9.79 Country-tinged alt rock group the Coal Porters released HOW DARK THIS EARTH WILL SHINE, which includes the songs "Fair Play Virginia," "Morning Song," and "Old Joe Clark."
The Coal Porters started life as a country-accented rock band in the manner of Sid Griffin's best-known project, the Long Ryders, but with time Griffin revamped the group into an acoustic band with strong bluegrass leanings, and How Dark This Earth Will Shine is the first Coal Porters studio set to document this change in direction. How Dark This Earth Will Shine reveals Griffin is still a fine and evocative songwriter, as "Fair Play, Virginia" and "Maybe I'll Cry Tomorrow" prove, and he's singing well on these sessions. Griffin's bandmates are also solid musicians, and while ...
