| | NoMeansNo People's Choice CD (2004)
100% Unnatural songs
$10.09 For more than two decades, the post-punk wiseass subgenre Nomeansno helped steer still loses out to the arch sound of its better-looking cousins -- the ones back East -- who wear fashionable leather and prune-swallowing looks on their skinny mugs. The Vancouver veterans admit the supposed frivolity of their lengthy career. "How f*cken [sic] old are Nomeansno?" the bathroom graffiti captured for the cover of The People's Choice reads. "Give it up grand dads." And this from a community happy to welcome Mission of Burma (active years: 1980-1983) back to the fold! The gall. People's Choice combines Nomeansno rarities with highlights spanning most of the band's Alternative Tentacles years, particularly Wrong, Sex Mad, You Kill Me, and Dance of the Headless Bourgeoisie. Its most vital work always shared space ...
| | Rosanne Cash List CD (2009)
100% Unnatural album
$14.45 After the dark and chilling themes of 2006's BLACK CADILLAC, which saw Rosanne Cash dealing with the deaths of her mother, Vivian Liberto, her father, Johnny Cash, and her stepmother, June Carter Cash -- all of whom passed within a two-year span -- one might assume that her next project would move into an even deeper level of bleakness, but with THE LIST, it's immediately clear that she has instead found a more measured place to stand. It's a lovely and redemptive outing that looks back to go forward. When Cash turned 18, her father, alarmed that his daughter only knew the songs that were getting played on the radio, gave her a list of what he considered 100 essential American songs; Cash kept that list, and now she's drawn on it for this wonderfully nuanced outing that brims with a kind of redemptive timelessness. THE LIST is a renewal and a testament to life, and it belongs to her father as much as it belongs to her, a beautiful restatement of her father's passions, only now, they've become his daughter's treasures, as well. It's an affirming story, but that's all it would ...
| | Them Crooked Vultures CD (2009)
100% Unnatural CD music
$13.05 Often, supergroups wind up dominated by one particular personality - think Eric Clapton in Derek & the Dominos, Jack White in the Raconteurs -- which makes the egalitarianism of Them Crooked Vultures all the more remarkable. Of course, when it comes down to it, it's a group of three natural-born collaborators: John Paul Jones, the old ...

| | Jimmy Beasley Jimmy's Houseparty CD (2002)
100% Unnatural album
$18.85 The 2002 CD reissue of JIMMY'S HOUSE PARTY includes both sides of Jimmy Beasley's eight Modern Records 45's, serveral Crown Records tracks, and nine previously unreleased masters and alternate takes.
Principally recorded in New Orleans, Louisiana between 1955 & 1965.
This 31-track CD combines 1950s Modern singles with assorted LP tracks, eight previously unissued outtakes and alternate takes, a 1965 comeback single, and a cover of "Harbor Lights" that didn't surface until a 1987 anthology. It's sometimes forgotten what a huge commercial force Fats Domino was in the 1950s, to the extent that some records were hatched with the specific intention of recreating Domino's sound. Although Beasley was not wholly a Domino imitator, it's hard to escape the feeling throughout much of this compilation that you're listening to Domino outtakes with a different vocalist. And while this does get the characteristic '50s New Orleans piano-based R&B sound down in general, and often Fats Domino-styled arrangements in particular, it's too often too derivative of Domino to enjoy, ...

| | Bandit Queen Hormone Hotel CD (1995)
100% Unnatural music CDs
$11.65 Originally released in 1995, HORMONE HOTEL is an album from U.K. based indie-rock act Bandit Queen.
The biting, aggressive swing of Hormone Hotel unfortunately never got the attention it should have upon the album's release in 1995, given the critical/commercial cachet of such acts as P J Harvey, Hole, and Elastica at nearly the same point in time. Bandit Queen's failure to make a mark was either surprising or, alternately, typical of an industry and media-base willing to go only so far but little more in accepting female-led bands. Regardless, all it takes is an initial spin of the opening track, "Scorch," -- a great rocker that lives up to its name with a fierce yet controlled ...
