| | The Soul & The Edge: The Best of Johnny Paycheck CD (2002)
Sugar For Sugar
$6.75 Recorded between 1971 & 1986. Includes liner notes by Johnny Whiteside.
Those unacquainted with the world of country music, who think the Johnny Paycheck story begins and ends with the recession-era working-man's anthem "Take this Job and Shove It" are as misguided as the benighted soul who thinks Willie Nelson's career began with "On the Road Again." Though he seldom gets credit from the Wille/Waylon camp, Paycheck was indeed one of the original country outlaws. Sadly, the turn of the century found most of his extensive, gem-laden catalog out of print, but this definitive, 23-song collection goes a long way towards correcting that injustice.
Such tracks as "11 Months and 29 Days" show that Paycheck was just ...

| | Brooks & Dunn #1's... And Then Some CDs (2009)
Sugar For Sugar
$12.39 Three weeks before the release of this double-disc best-of-and-then-some collection, Kix Brooks and Ronnie Dunn, who as Brooks & Dunn were one of the most successful duos in country music history, decided to call it a day after 19 years, 40 singles (half of which topped the country charts), ten studio albums, and a slew of awards. As far as the industry was concerned, they went out on top. #1s... AND THEN SOME contains 30 tracks spread over two discs and includes two new songs. Disc One opens with Ronnie Dunn and Terry McBride's barroom/stadium rock killer "Honky Tonk Stomp," which features special guest guitar blazer Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top, and Disc Two opens with the pair's own "Indian Summer," a midtempo ballad that's as fine a summation of their collective career as listeners are likely to get. Dozens of familiar cuts are here, from B & D's first smash "Boot Scootin' Boogie" ...

| | Be Bop Boogie CD (1990)
Sugar For Sugar
$11.19 Most of the tracks on BE BOP BOOGIE were originally released on Gotham records.
Recorded in the 1950's. Includes liner notes by Philip J. Tricker.
This is an above-average 14-song collection, obtained through the Gotham label archive belonging to Ivin Ballen in Philadelphia, but mostly cut for the Oak label, based in rural North Carolina. Don Hager & the Hot Tots sure sound it, a rough and ready rockabilly outfit with a hot piano as well as guitar in their lineup, and some good songs in their repertory. Their five songs constitute the lion's share of this CD, which otherwise is a showcase for the sax-driven rockabilly of Bobby Green & the Sportsmen. Jerry Lee Lewis' influence shows up throughout, especially in Dudley Calllicutt & the Go Boys' version of "Get Ready Baby," as does Carl Perkins' work in ...

| | Jack Pearson To All Purple Tree Trunks CD (2006)
Sugar For Sugar
$15.19 "To All Purple Tree Trunks," a Parents' Choice Silver Honor winner, is about being yourself and the need to accept ourselves and one another for who we truly are. The title song was originally conceived as a song for grown-ups, but Jack found that children really loved it! When this song literally saved the life of a young friend, Jack decided that more children needed to hear this vital message. But who's Jack? Well ...Some musicians appeal to grown-ups while others work only with kids. Then there’s that less common artist whose work truly speaks to grown-ups and children alike. That’s Jack Pearson, Mr. Song-Strummin’ Storyman! Growing up in a musical Midwestern family set the stage for the night in 1965 when Jack discovered the guitar at a campfire. These days Jack sings, strums, writes, tells, fiddles and dances his way around the United States performing over 200 concerts per year.Jack cares deeply about the arts in education. Each year brings him to K-6 schools around the country as a performer and resident artist where he leads workshops for the children exploring music, writing and storytelling. Jack has a special love of seeing kids play their own music and he carries on that age-old folk tradition with his line of hand-crafted folk instruments such as jawharp, rhythm spoons and the limberjack. Jack also performs frequently in church settings where he brings a refreshing creativity to our timeless faith journey. In addition to performing, Jack’s recordings have become favorites in households across the country. His work ...
