As an ad-man might say, "if you buy only one Jerry Douglas record this year, make it this one." If you buy two, make sure the other one is Strength in Numbers' THE TELLURIDE SESSIONS. SKIP, HOP AND WOBBLE may be the finest recording Douglas has been involved with to date. Considering the mind-boggling number of records he has made--not only as a Nashville sideman and/or producer but as a leader or sideman on countless "non-commercial" bluegrass, newgrass, and "new acoustic" releases--that's saying a lot.
This is a genuine trio recording. Douglas, Russ Barenberg, and Edgar Meyer are all at the top of their game as players and composers. Like THE TELLURIDE SESSIONS, which also included Douglas and Meyer, the beauty of this project lies in the participants' capacity to transcend mere prowess and individual reputation and come up with something truly collaborative. Naturally, there are wicked chops on display--but rarely as an end unto themselves. This is also a profoundly lyrical and reflective record, but the tautness of the spare instrumentation insures that the mood never lapses from reverie into maudlin noodling.
Recorded at The Sound Emporium, Music Row Audio and Scruggs Sound Studio, Nashville, Tennessee between November 1992 and March 1993. Includes liner notes by Russ Barenberg.

Good CD Pretty good CD with several excellent songs. Some were a little too bluegrass for my taste, but not bad. Submitted by a reviewer (Chipley, Fl, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Wow! Really Wow! Sometimes it’s slow and thoughtful, almost melancholy. At other times it’s fast passed and technically challenging. This is sometimes where musicians can get self absorbed and the average listener falls off the band wagon. Not so here! The rich tones and interplay between the members of this trio draw you in and take you for a ride where few have traveled before. This CD leans more to the jazz side of the fence than to traditional blue grass but come on! Get out a little! This is pure unadulterated excellence.
If you don’t know the players, there’s Jerry Douglas: Alison Krouss says he’s the best dobro player in the world! I recognized Edgar Meyer’s name from a CD that he did with Yoyo Ma. Lastly, it looks like Russ Barenberg is nominated for a Grammy award this year (2008).
Admittedly, the name of this CD is not very creative but don’t let that scar you off. This is the good stuff.

Jerry Douglas sure can play the dobro. As the world's undisputed premier dobro player, Douglas has played with just about everybody. And, as would befit somebody with that kind of distinction, his playing is utterly virtuosic. The only question left, then, is what he wants to do with it. On Lookout for Hope, Douglas' fifth release for Sugar Hill, Douglas delivers up his usual ...
| | Harold Mabern Few Miles From Memphis CD (1968)
Skip, Hop & Wobble songs
$14.15 On A Few Miles from Memphis, recorded by pianist Harold Mabern in 1968, he's joined by tenors George Coleman and Buddy Terry, bassist Bill Lee, and drummer Walter Perkins for a bluesy, rhythm-filled set featuring familiar fare like "A Treat for Bea" and fun originals like "Walkin' Back." There's also the odd inclusion of "There's a Kind of Hush," a pop song that comes out sounding like an old standard here. ~ Ronnie D. Lankford Jr.
When record labels like Prestige release two albums on one CD, it's a great bargain for music fans. A Few Miles from Memphis combines the album of the same name and Rakin' and Scrapin', both recorded by pianist Harold Mabern in 1968. On the first ...

$12.89 Muddy Waters made his first records down home in rural Mississippi in 1941, came up to Chicago in 1943, and began working for the Aristocrat label in 1947. This exciting chronological compilation presents everything he recorded from April of 1948 up through February 1950, when Aristocrat was renamed Chess Records. The Classics Blues & Rhythm Series enables listeners to study Muddy's artistic progress step by step, literally following a trail of old records from the plantation to the crowded, noisy clubs of the big city (see Classics 5008, Muddy Waters 1941-1947). On the first two tracks, Muddy receives excellent support from ace pianist Sunnyland Slim, alto saxophonist Alex ...
