| | B B King Blues CD (1960) (Import) Bonus Tracks; United Kingdom
Rambler's Blues songs
$12.55 Recorded in 1960, THE BLUES was one of the last albums B.B. King cut for the Crown label before moving to ABC-Paramount. The record has a loose, roadhouse vibe and features King backed by a full band, including horns, piano, harmonica, and a thumping rhythm section. At the heart of the set are, of course, King's stinging, soulful leads and his passionate vocals, serving up instant classics like "Why Does Everything Happen to Me" and "When My Heart Beats Like a Hammer." The album is distinguished by a raw, ragged feel, which proves refreshing in light of the artist's subsequent slicker recordings.
Originally released in 1958 by the budget-priced Crown label, The Blues collected a dozen sides B.B. King cut for RPM and Kent between 1951 and 1958. (RPM and Kent were owned by the Bahari Brothers who also ran Crown, which explains how one of the true prestige artists of the blues ended up on such a notoriously cheap-o label.) As was often the case with Crown's product, The Blues used a single hit tune (in this case "When My Heart Beats Like a Hammer," a Top Ten R&B chart entry in 1954) to help sell a package of lesser-known ...

| | Tony Rice Sings Gordon Lightfoot CD (1996)
Rambler's Blues songs
$13.89 Bluegrass singer/guitarist Tony Rice has been recording songs written by Gordon Lightfoot throughout his career, and this 17-track compilation gathers them together, adding a previously unreleased version of "Whispers of the North" that was cut for Rice's Me and My Guitar album. Included are tracks Rice recorded as part of J.D. Crowe & the New South, the Tony Rice Unit, the Rice Brothers, in a duo with Norman Blake, and as a solo artist. That means that on the various tracks he's joined by a newgrass who's who that includes Jerry Douglas, Ricky Skaggs, Sam Bush, Vassar Clements, and Bela Fleck, among others. The selections include "Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" and "Early Morning Rain," but for the most part Rice eschewed Lightfoot's better known compositions, and the collection serves to illustrate the overall quality of ...
| | Steve Almaas Kingo A Wild One CD (2000)
Rambler's Blues album
$13.85 Steve Almaas spent the late '70s and early '80s hopping from genre to genre, from the punky Suicide Commandos to the pop-quirky Crackers to the roots-rocking Beat Rodeo, with whom Almaas recorded his finest-ever song, 1985's "Just Friends." His solo career has been considerably more low-key and less bandwagon-esque, and his third solo effort is a relaxed pop/rock album with a pronounced country tinge that should appeal to any Marshall Crenshaw or Don Dixon fan. Kingo a Wild One (the song of that title sheds no light on what on earth that's supposed to mean) features a number of guests who are stars in some alternate pop reality (Nashville sessionman Kenny Vaughan, Hoboken pop stalwarts Doug Wygal and Richard Barone, blues-rocker Chris Whitley, and ex-Holly & the Italians bassist Mark Sidgwick), but it's Almaas' show all the way, and he delivers the most consistently catchy and exciting group of songs of his entire career. The British Invasion-ish "Pretty Picture" and the rollicking title track are particular standouts, but nearly every song features a memorable chorus or an appealing instrumental idea, like the Stax/Volt-style horn section that gooses the peppy "The Better in Us." Almaas sings better than ever before in his career, reining in the exaggerated faux twang that marred the Beat Rodeo albums. This is a solid, mature pop record, and the most consistently strong ...
| | Anti-Flag Underground Network CD (2001)
Rambler's Blues CD music
$6.69 As WTO has proven, the revolution will indeed be televised, and judging by Underground Network, Anti-Flag's anthemic songs will be wafting across the frontlines. From their earliest days, the group have worn their politics proudly on their sleeve, a shared belief which has seen them through lineup changes and expansion from trio to a quartet. Some things have changed over time, however, both sonically and lyrically. After several label moves, Anti-Flag are now happily denizened at Fat Wreck Chords, a melodic punk home far removed from their early purer hardcore sound. The sea change in style was evident on A New Kind of Army, and now crests in an ocean of powerful pop-punk melodies, which bind them firmly to the Southern Californian sounds of their labelmates. That said, Underground Network contains more than enough pugilistic hardcore to keep their old fans loyal, as well as enough echoes of punk's past to capture old-school geezers' hearts. It's this solidifying meld of styles past and present into a unique sound of their own that is making Anti-Flag such a force to be reckoned with ...
