$15.05 Ex-Blue Grass Boy and Sea Train member Peter Rowan is captured here at the very top of his game. Aided by the then-fledgling Nashville Bluegrass Band, Rowan sets out to create a quality, original yet traditional bluegrass record and creates a classic. Such a force was this album in bluegrass circles, that Rowan and the Nashville Bluegrass Band, by popular demand, performed many of these songs at bluegrass festivals for the next decade. Whatever song style the Rowan pen attempts the Rowan pen nails. Whether it is straight-ahead grass like "That High Lonesome Sound," unapologetic gospel such as "Jesus Made the Wine," or wistful ballads like "Meadow Green" and the ...

This handsomely packaged box set goes a long way towards illuminating the darker corners of Springsteen's recording career. Apparently, almost every time the Boss went into the studio he recorded more songs than he could possibly fit onto a record, and most of those extra tracks languished in obscurity. The four-disc TRACKS aims to change that. The amazing thing about the never-before-heard material here (and the little-known b-sides also included) is that most of the songs are just as impressive as the ones ultimately chosen to go on Springsteen's albums. Spanning various phases of his career, the selections chronicle Springsteen's ...

| | Cisco 7740 Valmont St. CD (2004)
Bluegrass Boy CD music
$9.89 Showing up a full seven years after his debut album, Wishing You Well from the Pink Motel (a rollicking slab of cowpunk Americana produced by Social Distortion's Mike Ness), Cisco's follow-up finds the Bakersfield native working with hometown hero Pete Anderson, who does the same thing for this singer/songwriter that he did for Dwight Yoakam back in the '80s: bypassing both Nashville cliché and the mellow traps of '70s California country-rock to create a traditional honky tonk sound with a rock & roll edge. Cisco's rough-edged voice, at times reminiscent of the outlaw Jerry Jeff Walker, is the perfect conduit for his smart, often rueful lyrics, and the varied musical settings for these ten songs, from the traditional two-step country of the title track to the more rockish, cynical "Lost, Broke or Sold," help the album avoid the sameness of Cisco's debut. The album's pinnacle, however, is the epic closer, "Long Hard Ride," a harrowing lost-love ballad on which Cisco expertly channels early-'70s Neil Young without delving into simple copying. ~ Stewart Mason
Amid the continually changing musical landscape of American music, there has been one constant: the presence of the "singer/songwriter" - an artist who can tell a poignant story through his music with a distinct point of view. Little Dog Records' artist Cisco carries on this great American tradition with his new album 7740 Valmont Street. Cisco proves himself to be one of those rare artists who can interweave vivid, emotional "pictures" with distinctly melodic songs. 7740 Valmont Street demonstrates an impressive artistic progression in Cisco's music. Deeply personal, Cisco's songs range from insightful studies of the human condition ("Lost, Broke or Sold") to pieces of clever prose ("Miss America") to meaningful slices of his own life ("7740 Valmont Street"). His lyric poetry is showcased in songs that combine a variety of musical influences reflective of Cisco's life and travels. Raised in California's San Joaquin Valley, Cisco listened to popular music on the radio and was also exposed to a cross section ...

| | Hits Of The 60'S CDs (1999)
Bluegrass Boy songs
$12.05 Out of the 30 selections contained on this three-disc set from Madacy, only one is an original recording. Every other track is an inferior take on the most popular version, almost always with disastrous results -- borderline karaoke, tinny electronic arrangements, poor sound quality (or any combination of the three). The original version of the Shangri-Las' "Leader of the Pack" is here, but that hardly justifies the purchase. You could hear these versions at a low volume in a wind tunnel and know that they're not the originals you'd like to add to your collection. It's that bad, so steer clear. ~ Andy Kellman
Hits of the 60s doesn't compile Pat Boone's hits of the '60s, but rather his versions of '60s hits. Boone's renditions were recorded between 1963 and 1965, and include his takes on the Beatles' "I Want ...
