Perhaps it's appropriate that the Bad Livers scaled back their punk influences and played up their traditional bluegrass roots when they moved to Sugar Hill Records for Hogs on the Highway. After all, the label is one of America's best independent country/bluegrass labels, so the group would have to clean up its act somewhat to fit in with the crowd. Fortunately, they haven't cleaned up too much, and Hogs on the Highway is a stomping, infectious collection of twisted newgrass, informed by punk energy but in the style of traditional bluegrass. ~ Thom Owens

Hogs On The Highway album
$11.95 All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology.
CAR WHEELS ON A GRAVEL ROAD won the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album. "Can't Let Go" was nominated for the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance.
Williams's fans waited a long six years for this album, as Lucinda went through music business hassles and a revolving door of producers. The reward for their patience is an album full of rootsy, heartfelt observations that alternately rock and mourn. CAR WHEELS is full of songs about loss and longing, like "Metal Firecracker," "Drunken Angel" and "I Lost It," but even when she's bemoaning her own lack of happiness ...
| | Robbie Fulks South Mouth CD (1997)
Hogs On The Highway CD music
$12.39 Chicago's Robbie Fulks may be the standard-bearer of alternative country, but you don't need a subscription to No Depression to enjoy his music. Any fan of real country will find cause to rejoice here. Fulks's second release, SOUTH MOUTH is a broader record than his first. The common threads connecting the Western Swing numbers, honky tonkers and sullen hill country ballads are witty lyrics, heartache, and a biting sense of humor. On "I Told Her Lies" his tongue is so far up his cheek it's a wonder he hasn't swallowed it. ...
| | Fred Eaglesmith Lipstick Lies & Gasoline CD (1997)
Hogs On The Highway music CDs
$14.95 He may be a gifted singer-songwriter from Canada, but Fred Eaglesmith is a far cry from the bookish-aesthete image of countrymen like Leonard Cohen and Joni Mitchell. Rather, Eaglesmith is a died-in-the-wool farm boy who owes more to Tom T. Hall than Tom Rush. He comes by his predilections honestly, though, and on LIPSTICK LIES he breathes new life into the Merle Haggard/Johnny Paycheck tradition of the hard-workin' country boy with a chip on his shoulder.
Even though songs like "Time To Get A Gun" and "Seven Shells" evoke the lives of hard-livin' men of the land, the production ...

| | Bottle Rockets 24 Hours A Day CD (1997)
Hogs On The Highway album
$13.89 These country-rock heroes of the working class made their major-label leap amid a storm of reservations. Would success spoil the Bottle Rockets and smooth the proletarian edge off their music? There was never any cause for alarm. 24 HOURS A DAY finds the Brooklyn cowboys remaining true to their roots.
As this album bears out, the Bottle Rockets veer more toward the rock end of the spectrum than many of their country-rock contemporaries. There is little or no nostalgia for the wide open spaces in these songs. Rather, they echo the desolate, trailer-park wasteland of postwar America that exists ...
| | Bad Livers Delusions Of Banjer CD (1992)
Hogs On The Highway CD music
$11.65 Upon first listen, the Bad Livers' debut recording sounds like a good, old-timey bluegrass album, but by the time the tuba enters on the third track, you begin to realize that this is not your average bluegrass combo. Danny Barnes has got the chops on both guitar and banjo, and sings in a voice no more nasal than many of the genre's stalwarts. He can even write tunes that stand rather nicely next to traditional tunes and Reno & Smiley. Then ...
