Darrell Scott's debut album is an ambitious fusion of various American roots musics, intercut with touches of jazz. Scott's songwriting isn't always fully formed, yet his music is rich and welcoming, featuring layers of guitars, banjos, dobros, trumpets, accordions and sighing steel guitars. Occasionally, it loses itself in the mist, but Aloha from Nashville is a fascinating and often compelling listen. ~ Thom Owens

Aloha From Nashville music CDs
$8.69 PARANOID proved to be Black Sabbath's most focused, consistent, and successful record. Leaving behind the amorphous, extended jams of their debut for focused songs and a more structured sound, Black Sabbath virtually wrote the book on heavy metal with the ominous, unforgettable riffs, thunderous rhythms, and dark themes on this release. There are some up-tempo rockers, the famous title track for one, but for the most part PARANOID oozes along like a bad dream, as on the slinky, creepy opener, "War Pigs," or the lumbering thud of "Iron Man" (which boasts one of the most indelible electric guitar riffs in rock history).

Aloha From Nashville songs
$27.19 Cowboy singer Carl T. Sprague can be credited -- or blamed -- for the fact that the Western wardrobe became a mainstay of singing horsemen and later of country music performers. When he embarked on his career in 1925, inspired by Vernon Dalhart's recording of "The Prisoner's Song," no one combined cowboy hats, boots, and spurs with their stage act. In fact, no one exclusively sang cowboy songs. When Sprague had a national hit with "When the Work's All Done This Fall," he introduced Americans to the cowboy and the songs he sung beneath the prairie moon. It didn't hurt that he had grown up in Texas, been on real cattle drives before attending Texas A&M, and learned the old songs from his Uncle Booth. Cowtrails, Longhorns, and Tight Saddles documents Sprague's early recordings between 1925-1929. The charm of these recordings is their off-the-cuff manner. Sprague's no smooth crooner like Gene Autry, which leaves the listener with a snapshot of cowboy music before commercial embellishments overwhelmed the spare style. A number of songs feature no more than Sprague's guitar and vocals ("Kisses" and "Bad ...

| | Tracy Byrd Greatest Hits CD (2005)
Aloha From Nashville music CDs
$8.49 The first two songs on Tracy Byrd's GREATEST HITS make clear what a wide variety of material the Beaumont, Texas native has successfully tackled. "The Truth About Men" (which also features Andy Griggs, Montgomery Gentry, and Blake Shelton) is a great example of Byrd's trademark party songs. Celebrating the less-than-dainty behavior that often characterizes the male gender, the tune is driven by a beat that tears a honky-tonk page straight from the Merle Haggard barroom book. "Just Let Me Be in Love," on the other hand, is a Latin-influenced number full of nylon-string flamenco-guitar leads and lush synthesizer lines. Although Byrd's vocal performance is stone-cold country, the end result here sounds more like SHANGO-era Santana than Marty Robbins or Freddy Fender. Luckily, Byrd's big, rich voice and classic phrasing tie the various stylistic ...
