This duo is keeping alive a valuable tradition that's liable to fade away: the country "brother" harmony duo. In traditional country music's past, there were the Delmore Brothers, the Louvin Brothers, and others. They sang in a close, tight harmony similar to that found in bluegrass. This sound influenced the Everly Brothers, who in turn influenced the Beatles, the Hollies and too many others to mention. Connell & Rigsby play country music that's closer in style to 1940s/1950s country, long before Nashville came to dominate. No pop polish, just guitars, mandolin, bass, fiddle and two voices sounding like the songs of the Virginia hills from decades past. But this is no museum piece: MEET ME BY THE MOONLIGHT is pure, pre-electric country music with harmony singing so full of ache it could snap your heart in two.
Aubrey Haynie (fiddle); Ronnie Simpkins (bass).
Recorded at Burnt Hill, Clarksville, Maryland.
Producers: Dudley Connell, Don Rigsby, Ronnie Freeland.
Personnel: Dudley Connell (vocals, guitar); Don Rigsby (vocals, mandolin);
Dirty Linen (4-5/00, p.77) - "...compare[s] to the landmark 1989 old-timey SKAGGS AND RICE....The most important similarity...is the solid and passionate performances of the songs, each of which is a testament to the craftsmanship and polish of some of the early traditional songwriters..." Meet Me By The Moonlight songs
$14.69 Combining the setup and general feel of a bluegrass band with the heartbreaking arrangements of traditional country, Mac Wiseman's Most Requested is a reflection of his success at both styles of music. Wiseman pulls off his blend by using his most powerful attribute -- his voice. His sad tenor howl floats effortlessly over the picking and strumming, making for not only a beautiful combination of styles but something that has his distinctive stamp on it. On standards like "In the Pines" and "House of the Rising Sun," Wiseman's arrangements make them into lazy country ballads, with hints of bluegrass coming through. But then on tracks like "The Bluebirds Are Singing for Me," the banjos and chugging rhythms are ...
| | Nelly Suit CD (2004)
Meet Me By The Moonlight album
$12.75 Nelly broke out in 2000 with his debut, COUNTRY GRAMMAR, and its infectious summer-anthem title track. Two years later, the St. Louis rapper dropped the multi-platinum NELLYVILLE and another summer anthem, "Hot in Herre," which balanced raw carnality with a deft pop hook. Nelly has always possessed this duality of unrefined energy and a melodic sensibility, and, in 2004, he decided to break the two aspects of his music into separate albums, SWEAT and SUIT.
On SUIT, he focuses on his more cultivated side with ...
