JUST OVER IN HEAVEN was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Southern, Country or Bluegrass Gospel Album.
Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver, without doubt the finest bluegrass gospel group performing today, seems unable to make a bad album, and Lawson's current lineup may be the best one he's ever had. Just Over in Heaven combines band arrangements with a cappella numbers, but even when the instruments are playing the vocal arrangements are at the center of the group's sound; where most bluegrass bands use standard parallel harmonies in their gospel arrangements, Lawson's approach is far more complex and is rooted equally in shape, note, and African-American gospel traditions. On tracks like "I Am Glad" and "We Need the Light" the parts move in intricate counterpoint, like cogs in a perfectly designed watch; the sound borders on that of a barbershop quartet. In fact, that effect is a little bit cloying on one or two tracks (notably "Listen to the Bells"), but, for the most part, this album succeeds spectacularly and is highly recommended. ~ Rick Anderson

| | Louvin Brothers Satan Is Real CD (1960)
Just Over In Heaven CD music
$9.09 The bizarre cover of SATAN IS REAL, which depicts Charlie and Ira Louvin awkwardly posed among fire, brimstone, and a very, very fake-looking cardboard demon, might lead unsuspecting record buyers to believe they have stumbled onto a kitsch classic. Fortunately for music fans, Ira Louvin--who designed the bizarre album jacket--was infinitely more adept at gospel songwriting than he was at art production. Contrary to its outward appearance, SATAN IS REAL is a serious, moving, and profoundly successful profession of faith.
Throughout most of their career, the Louvin Brothers divided their time between gospel and secular music, and each pursuit enriched the other. The Louvins' ...

| | Handsome Family Milk And Scissors CD (1996)
Just Over In Heaven songs
$10.49 On their second album, the Handsome Family began their retreat away from the scrappy, electric guitar-based sound of their debut, Odessa, and started to ease into the lovely but unnerving mix of Appalachian textures and 20th century despair that would become their calling card on Milk and Scissors. While "Winnebago Skeletons" and "The Dutch Boy" still feature amped-up guitars in all their noisy glory, most of the cuts reflect a more subdued approach, with acoustic guitars and subtle steel work dominating the proceedings. Despite embracing a less-abrasive style, Brett Sparks and his spouse and musical partner, Rennie Sparks, sure didn't sound any happier than they did on their debut; Milk and Scissors features a bit less in the way of dark humor and more simple darkness, reveling in bad judgment, cruel fate, heartbreak, and simple disappointment in all its shapes and sizes. ...
| | Windir Arntor CD (2001)
Just Over In Heaven album
$21.05 Although their very fine debut, 1997's SOKNARDALR, had already shown a remarkable creative vision and no lack of songwriting maturity, Windir's second album, 1998's ARNTOR, took advantage of lessons learned and much improved production standards to take the group's folk-laden black metal to a whole new level. Setting standards that would hereafter be emulated by numerous extreme metal bands attuned to their native musical traditions (e.g. Romania's Negura Bunget and the Ukraine's Drudkh), ARNTOR was arguably the shot heard 'round ...
| | Fred Frith Prints: Snapshots, Postcards, Messages And Miniatures, 1987-2001 CD (2002)
Just Over In Heaven CD music
$15.29 Liner Note Author: Fred Frith.
Recording information: Noise, NY (1987-2001); Triple Helix, Denver, CO (1987-2001).
Photographer: Heike Liss.
The short story: Prints is Fred Frith's first album of songs in 20 years. The long story: it is actually a collection of compilation tracks and unreleased studio sessions recorded between 1987 and 2001. No matter if you already own a few of these, a pop album by this man is a rarity -- and that is truly a shame. Of course, as a respected improviser, serious composer, and educator, anything lighter from this pillar of modern music will meet with severe criticism from people who take themselves too seriously. Lighten up! Cheap at Half the Price was the best tongue-in-cheek take at the New Wave. If Prints lacks its thematic focus, it still makes a very fine album, much friendlier to the listener, and truly enjoyable. The known material includes two cover songs for Tzadik tribute CDs to Burt Bacharach and Serge Gainsbourg, "Life of a Detective" recorded with 5uu's ...
