describe, though. Some songs are slow or have intros remincent of the Stoner Rock style, only they quickly build up into a full speed hardcore assault,of a very basic style, even when they feature some highly compressed, somewhat buried-in-the-mix guitar solos.Bass guitar predominates over the drums, which together with the dark lyrics, provides an ominous and atmospheric sound, especially to the intros, which are brilliant, like the soundtrack to a horror movie. This CD is well remastered but be ready to cope with a little clicking and popping here and there since it has been clearly recorded from the vinyl record, something not necessarily bad since many master tapes are often missing or deteriorated. The last two songs are welcome bonus tracks from their first single,in which the singer (Le Baron, same one I guess, though one wouldn´t tell)sounds exactly like Lemmy ! Not pessimistic, but realistic These guys are amazing. I had all their singles and records through this album. It is sort of metallish punk, but it is truly punk. The lyrics are pretty political, with constant biblical allusions. The imagery is dark--there is a nuclear holocaust around the bend if you don't do something to stop it; but the overall tone is actually somewhat optimistic. The sound is heavy and almost wicked--the singer is virtually growls Submitted by a reviewer (Long Beach, CA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

| | This Was Our Love: A Collection Of 21 Clifford T Ward Rarities 1968 - 1980 CD (2004) (Import) United Kingdom
Arise! Plus Two album
$15.59 Folk singer-songwriter Clifford T. Ward gets a fine showcase on THIS WAS OUR LOVE, a compilation of rarities recorded between the late 1960 and the early '80s. Songs include "Wait a Minute You Fool," "Not to Mention Her Smile," and "Always Think About You."
Like several other Ward reissues on Cherry Red, this suffers from damnably imprecise documentation as to this stuff's origins, despite pretty lengthy liner notes. The only tight hard data given, in fact, is in the CD's title, which at least places the dates of these tracks between 1968 and 1980. It can also be reasonably inferred that these recordings did not see the light of day at the time; that the first 12 of the 21 tracks were done between 1968-1972; that most of those 12 songs appeared on the deleted 1998 Hidden Treasures collection; that those same dozen songs were overdubbed in recent years by "modern musicians and arrangements" (though it's not 100 percent clear whether these were already overdubbed on the Hidden Treasures versions); and that overall these are "superior versions of selected tracks that appeared on the Ward albums Bittersweet, Ways of Love, and Hidden Treasures" (in the opinion of whoever wrote the notes beneath the track listings). A more interesting question than where exactly these things came from (and none of the individual tracks are given dates, of course) is why so much effort is being given to exhuming Ward's vaults in the first place. For this is the work of a modest, and modestly talented, early British rock singer/songwriter, the songs sounding more like demos of would-bes routinely consigned to the circular file than material worthy of serious ...
| | Neko Case Tigers Have Spoken CD (2004)
Arise! Plus Two CD music
$11.99 For 2004's THE TIGERS HAVE SPOKEN, her debut on the prestigious Anti label, alt-country singer/songwriter Neko Case forgoes a studio album in favor of a live outing. Those looking for the upbeat pop of Case's work with the New Pornographers won't find it here--this is straight-up twangy country rock that sticks closely to the sound of her previous records (BLACKLISTED and FURNACE ROOM LULLABY), and makes the most of the concert setting.
The focus here, as always, is on Case's powerful voice, ...
| | Michael Dean Damron Perfect Day For A Funeral CD (2005)
Arise! Plus Two music CDs
$12.15 On his debut solo album, A Perfect Day for a Funeral, I Can Lick Any Sonofabitch in the House's frontman, Michael Dean Damron, reveals his more reflective, introspective side. Unlike the politically charged rock that he normally throws down with his primary band, Damron's intimate song cycle is pitched in the Americana style, and for the most part it works. He looks at love from opposite viewpoints, with "Montana" celebrating a relationship in its infancy, while the vitriolic title cut finds it all falling apart. Because Damron's heartfelt delivery lends itself to optimism ("New Paint"), despair ("Blame It on the Whiskey"), and soul-searching ("Outlaw Song") alike, one hopes he'll continue his solo pursuits. Only the blues romp "Miss Amphetamine" feels out of place, but as far as melodic departures go, A Perfect Day for a Funeral is a pretty good example. ~ John D. Luerssen
Michael Dean Damron's debut solo record, "A Perfect Day for a Funeral", is full of love and hate. With some of the Northwest's best players (in the blues, folk, and country scene), Damron has created a soulful, rich collection of melodic, intimate songs that give you a deep look into his psyche. For those familiar with Michael Dean Damron, (also known as Mike D., front-man for the political rock 'n' roll outfit I Can Lick Any Sonofabitch in the House), "A Perfect Day for a Funeral" is a long time coming.Engineered, mixed, and produced by accomplished producer and multi-instrumentalist musician Lewi Longmire (Jackie O-Motherfucker, Kevin "Bingo" Richey, James Low, Little Sue, and Michael Hurley), "A Perfect Day for a Funeral" finds Damron singing about what he knows.Whether he's singing about the he collapse of his first marriage, angrily, in the title track. And embracing new found love on the ballad "Montana", or discussing racism and murder on "Spit" (a true story about Damron's friend Lin "Spit" Newborn, the first social activist killed on U.S. soil in thirty years). He's always singing from the heart, speaking his mind - and pulling no punches. Then, on "Blame It On the Whiskey" he tells the tale of a man who had it all and, through drugs and alcohol, loses it, while "Outlaw Song" is a song reflecting on Damron's inner demons, sometimes wishing he was never born."Miss Amphetamine" is the only rocker on ...
