Black & White; Standard Screen; Soundtrack English In the bearly part of the 20th century, Mississippi was still ultimately a slave state. The Delta region had recently been cleared of wilderness, and profitable plantations had sprung up, attracting African-American workers to sharecrop. Unfortunately, Jim Crow laws were in effect that made sure these workers stayed tied to the lowest level of society. Around the same time, a new form of music popped up: blues. The blues spread through Mississippi and infected Son House and Bukkha White, now recognized as two of the form's most influential figures. Both masters of Delta bottleneck blues and acknowledged by Muddy Waters and Robert Johnson as influences, this video captures the two at the height of their powers. | | Eric Sardinas Black Pearls CD (2003)
Masters Of The Country Blues - Son House And Bukka White video
$10.09 Eric Sardinas is a good, even great, electric slide player, and his Dobro skills are equally as impressive. His band on Black Pearls, Paul Loranger on bass and Mike Dupke on drums, is also quite good. The songs, all written by Sardinas, sound good and rock hard, although you've heard all this said before. (Granted, blues feeds on recycled lyrics, and it is undoubtedly hard to find a new way to say "I've been down so long I'm gonna leave you.") The highlights here -- the cheerful pop-blues of "Big Red Line," the bluegrass-paced Dobro work on "Old Smyrm Road" -- come on songs that step a little bit outside the blues-boogie template. ~ Steve Leggett
Eric Sardinas is a good, even great, electric slide player, and his Dobro skills are equally as impressive. His band on Black Pearls, Paul Loranger on bass and Mike Dupke on drums, is also quite good. The problem here is the material. The songs, all written by Sardinas, are at the worst end of blues cliché. They sound good and rock hard, but in the end, you've heard all this said before, and probably better. Granted, blues feeds on recycled lyrics, and it is undoubtedly hard to find a new way to say "I've been down so long I'm gonna leave you," but it can be done (Otis Taylor comes immediately to mind). The highlights here -- ...

Masters Of The Country Blues - Son House And Bukka White video
$7.89 In Clint Eastwood's MYSTIC RIVER, a murder mystery in South Boston unites three men who have been friends since childhood. Grippingly powerful performances from the entire cast--Sean Penn, Tim Robbins, Marcia Gay Harden, Kevin Bacon, Laurence Fishburne, and Laura Linney--combined with gritty photography, an exceptionally emotional script, and a convincing working-class Boston setting make this film one of Eastwood's most consistent and penetrating works.
Though they live in the same houses where they grew up, Jimmy (Penn), Dave (Robbins), and Sean (Bacon) have drifted apart over time. Their distance is due to a disturbing and violent episode that occurred when they were children. Even now, as ...

$17.89 Silent comedy king Mack Sennett found his muse in Mabel Normand, perhaps the pre-sound era's funniest actress and the costar of Charlie Chaplin's TILLIE'S PUNCTURED ROMANCE. For fans of the pair's work--or for those about to discover their genius--this release highlights two of their collaborations. In THE EXTRA GIRL, Normand sets out for Hollywood to seek her fame ...
