Appointed "Mother of the Blues" during her '20s heyday, singer Ma Rainey was one of the best of the many classic female blues singers of the period. An inspiration to the "Empress of the Blues," Bessie Smith, Rainey was a Georgia native who was discovered in Chicago during the early '20s. While not the possessor of a voice as powerful as Smith's, Rainey still cut a slew of strong sides featuring a fine blend of country blues intensity and jazz-band sophistication. This excellent Yazoo collection captures Rainey in her prime from 1924-1928. Backed by large combos and minimal guitar and piano tandems, Rainey shines on such highlights as "Booze and Blues," "Shave 'Em Dry," and "Lucky Rock Blues." Topped off with stellar contributions by blues and jazz luminaries like Don Redman, Coleman Hawkins, Kid Ory, and Georgia Tom Dorsey, Ma Rainey's Black Bottom makes for an excellent introduction to blues singer's small but potent catalog. ~ Stephen Cook

A collection from the Mercury funk lineup that covers the hits from the first five Gap Band albums. Every major hit that they had is included here. What one might notice is that all of the major hits ("You Dropped a Bomb on Me," "Burn Rubber on Me," "Early in the Morning," and "I Don't Believe You Want to Get up and Dance") all sound surprisingly similar. This may or may not be a large surprise to everyone, but the bright note about their similarity is that the basic riffs and rhythms that they all use are extremely catchy. The energy that the Gap Band exudes in the midst of producing a song is stunning, and this compilation displays that to the fullest extent. For a basic introduction to the forms of funk that the Gap Band followed, this album would certainly suit any given listener. San Francisco-based acoustic guitarist Craig Ventresco makes his way where almost everyone else fears to tread nowadays -- reviving forgotten vaudeville and pop tunes from the early years of the 20th century. That, of course, is a no-no in a 21st century musicological scene that is more than a little embarrassed by the pop music of those days -- often for PC reasons -- yet Ventresco's spirited, intricate arrangements for solo guitar sound anything but anachronistic. In choosing and arranging his material for solo guitar, Ventresco avoids the sand trap of sentimentality that could have easily pinned this music firmly in the past. Drawing upon country, blues, ragtime, and even classical techniques, he enlivens such rarities as "Whoa, You Heifer" (1904), "Tobacco-Rag Waltz" (1909), "Dance of the Nile Maidens" (1906), and even the more familiar snake charmer "Salome," essentially making them more acceptable to modern ears. Occasionally, he pulls a well-known composer from out of his large song bag (Scott Joplin's "Sunflower Slow Drag," "Goodnight Angeline" from the Eubie Blake/Noble Sissle team), and Ventresco's own "Shadow Blues" fits unobtrusively into the mosaic. Indeed, if you put modern titles on many of these tunes as heard here, only a specialist could accurately guess their vintage.
