Revered as a pioneer of traditional Cajun music, fiddler and vocalist Dennis McGee (1893-1989) was posthumously honored in 1994 with a 26-track Yazoo compilation focusing upon his early recordings, waxed in New Orleans during the years 1929-1930, with fiddlers Ernest Fruge and McGee's brother-in-law Sady Courville. Fortunately, the ancient 78 rpm pressings were cleaned up using noise reduction technology. This will allow post-postmodern listeners to relax and enjoy music recorded so long ago. In addition to traditional Acadian songs, this assortment of old-fashioned performances includes the lively one-step and 2-step dances, various waltzes, a Cajun reel, and one melody designated as a blues, although in truth the blues element is strongly present throughout all of McGee's recorded works. With its roots in France, Nova Scotia, and the swamps of Louisiana, this rugged, at times hauntingly beautiful music has a magical quality all its own. It will sound best when heard while driving on dirt roads or steaming up the kitchen during spicy food preparation. ~ arwulf arwulf

| | Tinsley Ellis Speak No Evil CD (2009)
Complete Early Years 1929-1930
$14.95 Tinsley Ellis has worked hard since the early 1980s to establish himself on the contemporary blues scene. As a result, he has become one of the most consistent, and therefore quintessential, electric blues men. He's also a good songwriter in that he stretches the blues form as far as it will go, and occasionally he crosses into solid hard rock territory. On SPEAK NO EVIL, it seems as though Ellis has been listening to some of Robin Trower's early to mid-period records. And what seems to be at work on SPEAK NO EVIL is Ellis trying to push ...
| | Paul Butterfield Original Lost Elektra Sessions CD (1995)
Complete Early Years 1929-1930
$8.39 THE ORIGINAL LOST ELEKTRA SESSIONS stem from the Butterfield Blues Band's attempt to record their debut album. The tapes were scrapped and a whole new album was recorded.
The songs here, recorded in late 1964 before keyboardist Mark Naftalin joined up, were intended for the Butterfield Band's first album. However, they were junked at the last minute by producer Paul Rothchild, who felt they weren't technically up to ...
| | Rockin Johnny Band Man's Temptation CD (1999)
Complete Early Years 1929-1930
$12.89 Johnny Burgin's second recording features his band alone, no special stars or guests, and they stand up quite well instrumentally and traditionally. Tinges of rockabilly, soul or pop may creep in, but they play Chicago style blues in a manner very similar to Paul Butterfield. They may be more like Butter, especially Johnny's vocals, than any band heard in the past thirty years and that's a good thing. Burgin sings and plays lead guitar, with help from Willie "Big Eyes" Smith's son Kenny on drums, solid electric bass guitarist Sho Komiya, veteran second guitarist Rick Kreher and Martin Lang, a very fine harmonicist who anchors many of these tunes with Johnny. Five of the thirteen cuts are written by Burgin, the soulful title track ...

$14.75 ANTHOLOGY 1953-1961 compiles Little Milton's singles for the Sun and Bobbin labels.
Recorded between 1953 & 1961. Includes liner notes by Bill Dahl.
Little Milton's 1953-1954 Sun sessions, and his 1958-1961 stay at Bobbin Records, comprised virtually everything he recorded in his early career prior to joining Chess. This collection doesn't gather every last bit he did for Sun and Bobbin, and doesn't have anything from ...

Complete Early Years 1929-1930
$14.29 The third and last Tribe Called Quest member to release a solo album, Ali Shaheed Muhammad not only had much to prove but also much to say compared to his former bandmates, Q-Tip and Phife Dawg. As a strictly instrumental part of Tribe (mostly as a DJ, also as a producer), Muhammad never had a voice previously, and as a long-practicing Muslim, he obviously had a clear message to bring. Shaheedullah and Stereotypes balances his life as a Muslim and also an American, featuring a barrage of message tracks dealing with topics from education to race relations to love and family to spirituality, although he has guest ...
