The Black Crowes were dogged with comparisons to the Rolling Stones and the Faces throughout the first decade of their career, so it came as a mild surprise that they teamed with Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page in late 1999 for a couple of concerts. Zeppelin had a mystique and majesty about them that the Crowes never attempted to emulate. They were an earthy, bluesy rock band and while they found a number of different ways to rework their influences, they never tried the stately grandeur that was Zeppelin's second nature. So, some observers were curious to see how these two approaches worked. Well, it worked very, very well indeed. It shouldn't have come as a surprise that it was a good, comfortable fit since Page always demonstrated a true love of blues and early rock & roll, even on Led Zep's heaviest moments. What may be a surprise, at least to listeners that always dismissed the Black Crowes as revivalist hacks, is how supple and muscular the band sounds on Live at the Greek and how powerful vocalist Chris Robinson is. The double-disc album, released originally only through the internet but then through retail on TVT, essentially replicates an entire concert from Page and the Crowes, one of the first before they set out on a full-length American tour in the summer of 2000. They stick to Led Zeppelin classics and old blues and R&B standards like "Woke up This Morning," "Sloppy Drunk," "Mellow Down Easy," and "Shake Your Money Maker," plus the Yardbirds' "Shape of Things to Come" and Fleetwood Mac's "Oh Well." No Crowes songs are here due to contractual reasons - the band left American/Columbia in 1999, and they were not allowed to recut any song they released on the label in the years immediately following their departure; but in a way, that only strengthens the album. By pounding out hard-driving blues-rock and classic Zeppelin tunes, the band is able to stretch out and reveal just what a capable, versatile band they are. The true sign of their abilities is that Page sounds looser and happier here than he has in years; he sounds like he's truly enjoying himself, a quality that is debatable on the Page & Plant records, no matter what their virtues are. Live at the Greek isn't a landmark release, and only hardcore Page, Black Crowes, and Zeppelin fans are likely to want this, no matter how vibrant and lucent these faithful interpretations are. But for those fans, they'll be quite pleased with how good, how strong Live at the Greek is. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine Following a successful collaboration at a 1999 London benefit show, it made perfect sense for Jimmy Page to invite the Black Crowes to be his back-up band for a mini-tour later that year. Recorded during a pair of sold-out shows at Los Angeles' Greek Theatre, these sets are dominated by Led Zeppelin tunes, along with a mix of classic blues nuggets and covers of Fleetwood Mac and Page's first group, The Yardbirds. (Due to contractual obligations, no Crowes songs are included here). Chris Robinson's soulful singing ably fills in for Robert Plant's caterwaul, particularly with the sinister "In My Time of Dying" and the bluesy drawl of Willie Dixon's "You Shook Me." Guitarists Rich RobinRolling Stone (4/27/00, p.69) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...The combination is a win-win....The stomping treatments of Zep's tortured blues [prod] Page into the kind of fury that used to be a nightly routine....simultaneously raucous and faithful..." Uncut (10/00, p.86) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...A live double album's worth of Zep's greatest guttural roars and stormtrooping stanzas..." Mojo (Publisher) (9/00, p.103) - "...The most conservative rock'n'roll record of the year...and probably also the most enjoyable..." NME (Magazine) (8/5/00, p.29) - 7 out of 10 - "...A work of licksmanship....Guitar tech album of the year, and a whole lotta irony-trashing fun besides." Jimmy Page Live At The Greek Songs Live At The Greek Music Review Average Rating: (4.4 out of 5 stars) good one
Loved the Zep tunes, not convinced by the bluesy standards. It's probably worth 4.5 - live albums don't get much better really. Submitted by zack pro (Kidderminster UK) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 2 found this helpful.
Excellent stuff but Plant still rules This is a meeting of minds and generations and it works beautifully. The Crowes are obviously big Zeppelin fans. Let's face it: anybody claiming to be a Rock musician cannot deny the massive debt owed to Led Zeppelin. Chris Robinson is a fantastic singer and, yes, he does do these wonderful titles justice (you can hear the sincere affection in every syllable uttered) but Plant was the original and still the best. His was a voice of incomparable strength and beauty,a uniqueness that defies description. This is an excellent Rock album that no fan of Jimmy Page or The Black Crowes can really be without. Buy this CD! Amazing, Robinson sounds (gasp) better then Plant on any live Led Zep recording I have heard. A must have for every Led Zep fan. Submitted by gonsiska (Columbus, OH) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Bye-Bye Percy !! Possibly the best "legitimate" live album ever released, even preferable to The Song Remains The Same (after all, it didn't take Jimmy three years to mix it!). This is Led Zeppelin live as you've never heard them. From the first note to the last, what a treat. All the power of Led Zeppelin plus two more guitars and a keyboard player! Highlights from the Zep catalog include Ten Years Gone that the boys have brewed to the peak of succulenticity!! That's followed by some incredible slide work by Jimmy on In My Time Of Dying and to finish the trifecta, Your Time Is Gonna Come features an outstanding organ intro and outro by Ed Hirsh that brings tears to my eyes when I hear it! Those are just some of the highlights on disc one!
The Lemon Song opens side two with all the gut wrenching blues displayed on the very first Led Zeppelin album, followed the amazing three guitar attack of Mr. Page along with Rich "my brother's a stoner" Robinson and Audley Freed that fleshes the song out live like never before. A complete version of Out On The Tiles runs right into Whole Lotta Love that'll make you yearn for more.
Not taking second place to the LZ songs are some great cover tunes. BB Kings Woke Up This Morning will fling you out of bed with it's uptempo beat and contains a solo by Jimmy that shreds the guitar in a style seldom heard by Mr. Page other than on those long Whole Lotta Love Medleys that fans in Japan and the LA Forum were treated to in the early '70's. The Shpape Of Things To Come confirms the Crowes decendency from Faces and Humble Pie by performing the song ala Jeff Beck Group w/ Rod Stewart, the solo however is done ala Yarbirds! You start to feel like you're at a Rock'N'Roll seminar by the time you get to Fleetwood Mac's Oh Well and Shake Your Money Maker is as close your gonna come to a Black Crowes original as problems with Sony keep some fantastic tunes (No Speak No Slave, Remedy) off the record. It's a shame as you miss some great licks by Rich Robinson and Audley Freed.
It's a pity that both shows recorded for the record aren't released in their entirety as the flow of the shows is changed greatly by remixing the song order somewhat (always a thorn in the pride of live music collectors.) This album should also please those who shy away from live albums because the songs sound so different than the record. The Zep songs are not only lush and full bodied, I think they sound better than the records thanks to the Crowes playing their hearts out.
If you're trying to decide between this and the musicmaker version, this has no gaps between the songs, but you can't change the running order.
If you love loud hard guitar music then this is an absolute must have for your collection. Submitted by sambuca_b (Seattle, WA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
