Gravity Kills is an industrial band with rock and roll underpinnings. The band's electronically-based music is cut with real guitars and drums. Like many artists in the genre (Nine Inch Nails, Marilyn Manson, Ministry), Gravity Kills writes songs that expound dark themes. But for the most part, Gravity Kills stays out of the psychological infernos that are so often found in this kind of music. Quirky samples and dance beats are interspersed among the heavy guitars and keyboards, making for a lighter sound that is at once challenging and accessible.

The debut effort from St. Louis industrial rock band Gravity Kills delivers an ample mix of crunching guitars, pounding drum loops, layered synthesizers, and vocals that escalate from intense whispers to raging screams. With its themes of alienation, hopelessness, and regret, the album resembles the abrasive tone of its first single "Guilty," the song that initially brought the band together to record when a St. Louis radio station was looking for tracks to include on a compilation project. "Guilty" gained popularity through extensive radio airplay in both the U.S. and Canada, quickly bringing industry attention to the four-piece. Along with this success came the pressure to record and release a full-length album. In 1995, the band signed with TVT Records and released Gravity Kills a year later. Throughout the album's 11 tracks, the band's sound rings a bit too familiar. It closely resembles that of a handful of other industrial rock acts, due in part to the influence of co-producer John Fryer (Nine Inch Nails, Stabbing Westward, Filter, White Zombie). Unfortunately, where the album is rich in production, it falls short on melody and originality. This isn't to say that melodies have been completely forgotten, but those that can be detected often seem recycled and are obstructed by a muddied layer of samples and atmospherics. Throughout the program, it seems that the band is using studio wizardry to over-compensate for lackluster songwriting. Although Gravity Kills starts off with a bang, sounds soon begin to run together and it gets increasingly difficult to discern where one song ends and another begins. Overall, the album is a moderately satisfying affair. While it succeeds in delivering a convincible sense of raw emotion and a good dose of angst-ridden metallic guitars, repeated listens would prove to be more enjoyable if the band had put more of an effort into their songwriting and less into programming and production tricks. ~ Don Kline

Gravity Kills Music Review

Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) 5 stars

5 stars I am suprised no one else has left a review !!!!!
This album is great from the start to the finish. With Nine Inch Nails fighting with their record label about the release of their new album (The Fragile), this album gave the rest of us industrial fans something to rock out to. While compareing this album to any other would be stupid (due to its unique sound) I would compare this to N.I.N. work of the mid 90's. Not as experimental as Broken (but some could draw lines to contect the two). But more period work like "Hurt" could be compared to Gravity Kills's "Hold". For those of you who have jumped onboard during Gravity Kill's last couple albums would be doing your self an unjustice to NOT own this album.

Following 1996's self-titled release, Gravity Kills continues to be a major player in the "pop industrial" genre. PERVERSION is released on TVT Records, Trent Reznor's label, and his influence is all over it. This is angry synth rock at its best, though there is variety also--"Drown" has a dance hook that temporarily diverts from the gloom, and "Alive" leans towards metal. "Falling" has a catchy electronic beat fueled by a great bassline. Though ...

"Fuel" was nominated for the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance. "Better Than You" won the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance. When Metallica recorded 1996's LOAD, the studio sessions were fruitful enough for the band to put out two records. A year and a half later, RELOAD is the inevitable follow-up. Stretching beyond Metallica's speed metal roots, RELOAD is a continuation of the experimentation that dismayed many old fans and welcomed in many new ones. As a result, many Metallica firsts are reached on their eighth album. Some anomalies include recruiting the legendary Marianne Faithfull to contribute backing vocals on "The Memory Remains" and the addition of hurdy-gurdy ...

Having come together as a band in junior high school, the members of Live demonstrate a maturity and grasp of rock essentials far beyond their years, one reason why THROWING COPPER seems likely to vault them into the very upper echelons of pop songwriting and arranging. Aided by Talking Heads guitar and keyboard wiz Jerry Harrison, THROWING COPPER is moody yet celebratory, guarded yet rocking, spare yet richly detailed--a powerful follow-up to their debut effort MENTAL JEWELRY. "The Dam At Otter Creek" and "White Discussion" act as ominous bookends to THROWING COPPER; the former a spooky tale of murder, the latter a raging, apocalyptic vision of a dying earth. Framed by a dense, keening wall of electric guitars, and the powerhouse rhythmic backing of guitarist Chad Taylor, bassist ...

Gravity Kills album

By rights, this CD shouldn't get as high of a rating as it does; its 15 songs scarcely take up 35 minutes and there is zero annotation, the interior of the insert given over instead to promoting other parts of this series. But the sound is good, and the quality of the music coupled with the relatively low price make this a handy and enjoyable collection of R&B harmony vocal recordings. Included among the highlights are "Always" by the Distants, the precursors to the Temptations, which Warwick Records licensed from their Detroit company; the Genies' rocking and exquisitely danceable "Crazy Love," "Little Young Girl," and "Twistin' Pneumonia" ...

Ambrosia Somewhere I've Never Travelled CD  (1976) Remastered

Gravity Kills CD music
CD $5.95  4.5 stars Top 500 Audio Samples
After achieving moderate success with their self-titled debut, Ambrosia decided to up the ante by going for a bigger, more symphonic sound on this follow-up outing. To achieve this goal, they enlisted Alan Parsons, who mixed their first album, to produce and Andrew Powell (arranger for the Alan Parsons Project) to do full-blown orchestral arrangements on a number of the tracks. The resulting album lacks the careful fusion of pop and prog elements that characterized Ambrosia, with songs tending to fall into either progressive or soft rock categories. Just the same, it is a strong album with a number of sonically arresting moments. The finest songs are the most overtly progressive, the most dazzling being "Danse With Me, George," a tribute to Chopin that leads the listener through a bewildering array of styles (classical, jazz, and pop, to name just a few) in just under eight minutes. "Cowboy Star" is another knockout, bringing its tale of a city dweller who dreams of cowboy glory to life with a beautiful orchestral mid-section that is strongly reminiscent of Aaron Copland. None of the straightforward pop songs are as catchy or instantly memorable as "Holdin' on to Yesterday," but "Runnin' Away" presents an appealing blend of carefully arranged harmonies and acoustic sounds, and "We Need You Too" provides the album with a suitably stately finale ...

Red Wanting Blue\'s most recent press release....Red Wanting Blue To Release These Magnificent MilesFirst Studio Album in Three Years - Shows Major Growth For Ohio BandColumbus, OH-Red Wanting Blue is a band that logs many miles in their bus touring the nation. The fact that they have survived for over a decade without the support of a record label is proof that an explosive live show, hard work and well crafted songs are a formula for longevity at any level. Red Wanting Blue will release their eighth album, These Magnificent Miles, on August 19. Produced by Jamie Candiloro (Ryan Adams, REM, Willie Nelson), this new collection of songs is an autobiographical journey telling the tale of the many adversities they are up against. All the while, continuing to reach their incredibly loyal fan base, in addition to embracing their independence. This album marks a major accomplishment for Red Wanting Blue.

Red Wanting Blue's previous release, The Warehouse Sessions (2006), is an intimate live album/DVD recorded in their warehouse with 100 adoring fans, and debuted at #1 on Awarestore in its first week of pre-sale. 2004's Pride: The Cold Lover was another notable indie success, also debuting at #1 on Awarestore and landing several songs on the CBS/VH1 program, 'Love Monkey' as well as the CW hit show 'Life is Wild.
