(29 Customer Reviews)
Originally released in 1999 through Spinefarm/Nuclear Blast, this release caused a major stir in the metal community because it greyed the lines between several of metal's impassioned subgenres. HATEBREEDER could be called the first-ever neo-classical, melodic black/death/thrash/power metal album in existence. Hatebreeder, the second release from Finland's Children of Bodom, is a louder, faster, and positively heavier release than the group's debut. Under normal circumstances, this type of evolution is a guaranteed upgrade for a metal band, but not all of Hatebreeder's elements are improvements on the blueprint established during Something Wild. Most noticeably, Alexi Laiho's black metal scream is more menacing and consistent, but this is a disputed topic among Scandinavian metal enthusiasts. Many listeners enjoy the music, but could do without the bloodcurdling vocal excess, while others consider it a critical element of any real metal statement. The value of so much throat splitting is subjective, but Laiho's refinement of the approach isn't. Along with the shouting, the entire sound of Hatebreeder is improved. The guitars and keyboards are massive and more frantic, and Jaska Raatikainen's drums are unreal. In the history of metal, it is difficult to recall many displays of pure speed that top Children of Bodom. The rest of the band definitely keeps up with Raatikainen's machine-gun delivery. Guitarists Laiho and Alexander Kuoppala also deserve credit for the thick-sounding rhythms and quick lead playing. As long as these activities aren't technically enhanced, the band deserves credit for the physical accomplishment, but it all doesn't quite add up artistically, at least not to the standard of other Children of Bodom releases. ~ Vincent Jeffries Hatebreeder Music Review Average Rating: (4.7 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews One of bodom's best! I like COB's days with nuclear blast records alot better like this albulm. They sounded a lot more raw and powerful. Downfall is definitley COB at their best! Bodom.......going to be a classic mosh it up, Bodom is my favorite black/death metal band mainly because of sometimes the 80's style of solos in the songs, the great guitar work, drums, and keyboards. I really don't care for the vocals i dont dislike them, i do like them but i prefer more 80's style vocals. this album is my favfor this band Something wild is a close runner up, words for ya...... GET IT! Submitted by Alex (("Spokane, Wa, USA")) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Genius Alexi is a legendary composer, and his skills show in this album particularly. Every song is amazing, but the Bed of Razors solo is easily worth the cd cost alone. If you can stand intense speed-metal, this album will blow you away. True musicians. Submitted by Max (FL, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Photographer: Toni Härkönen. Edging up on its 10-year anniversary, Finnish metallers Children of Bodom have almost completely traded in their black metal roots for the sort of chunky, melodic action that many screamo acts built their entire sounds around. | | Venom At War With Satan CD (1983)
Hatebreeder
$10.45 Includes liner notes by Dave Ling. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Though neither of their first two albums had sold in very large quantities (even by heavy metal standards), by 1983 Venom had become simply impossible to ignore. To be sure, their exceedingly Satanic posturing wasn't nearly as shocking as it was cartoonish, and their impenetrable dirge of embryonic black metal was known to clear rooms faster than a fire alarm, but somehow, these qualities only helped fuel the metal community's interest in the band. At the time, even their most promising New Wave of British Heavy Metal contemporaries (Iron Maiden, Def Leppard, etc.) were still struggling to break out of the strictest metal circles, but what they had, and what Venom craved above all else, was some measure of respect from the media, most of whom still viewed them as a trio of buffoons. So when it came time to record their third album, At War with Satan, the band took desperate measures to try and validate both their technical ability as musicians and their songwriting capabilities. Their folly gave birth to the album's bloated magnum opus of a title track -- a twenty-minute concept piece/sonic ordeal taking up the album's entire first half and dedicated to the lord of darkness himself (no, not Ozzy, the Devil). Needless to say, Venom were simply not equipped to pull off this feat (heck, can you name the bands besides maybe Rush who did?) and much of "At War with Satan" is ...

| | Paul Anka Rock Swings CD (2005) Import
Hatebreeder
$15.15 Having written a fair number of them, Paul Anka recognizes a contemporary standard when he hears one, even if it doesn't conform to the historical model as it's existed from the days of Tin Pan Alley to Broadway. And so his songbook of chestnuts plucked from the '80s and '90s rock canon, Rock Swings, fares much better than its closest contemporary, Pat Boone's novelty In a Metal Mood: No More Mr. Nice Guy. First of all, there's the material -- a compelling selection of standards that reveals a close inspection and an inspired reimagining of the pop and alternative artists of the period (perhaps not by Anka himself). The disc does commit a few errors by resorting to novelty selections (Survivor's "Eye of the Tiger" and Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit"), but the big surprise here is that most of the songs slip into the standards bag with an uncanny ease (Pet Shop Boys' "It's a Sin," Billy Idol's "Eyes Without a Face," Lionel Richie's "Hello"). No matter how far the stretch, Anka and his inspired primary arranger, Randy Kerber, make these songs work in a swing context; in fact, it takes only a single listen to confirm that the narrator of even Van Halen's "Jump" is at heart quite the ring-a-ding swinger -- casual, cynical, knowing. There are other inspired choices here, tender ballads like R.E.M.'s "Everybody Hurts" or Spandau Ballet's "True," and, astonishingly, the nihilist anthem "Blackhole Sun" by Soundgarden. Most of Chris Cornell's lyrics -- "Hang my head, drown my fear/ Till you all just disappear" -- could easily have found a home on Sinatra's Only the Lonely, although at least one line -- "Call my name through the cream/ And I'll hear you scream again" -- wouldn't have had a prayer. Anka only missteps when he tries to wring meaning from lyrics that require some emotion to carry them; on "Smells Like Teen Spirit," the prime offender, Anka slips into novelty territory when he injects a forceful "Yeah!" immediately after delivering Nirvana's classic lines "A mulatto, an albino/ A mosquito, ...
