(1 Customer Review)
Back from the bowels of metal limbo comes the mighty Hypocrisy with their self-titled masterpiece. The Final Chapter was supposed to bid the metal community adieu, but it seems that the tremendous impact of that album has brought Peter Tagtgren and company out for another go. Crafting and delivering a slew of brand new, megalithic guitar and bass riffs, Hypocrisy has created a release that is "100 percent pure organic metal" (to quote the scholarly Mr. Schuldiner). From the opener, "Fractured Millennium," to the galloping Iron Maidenish "Fusion Programmed Minds," one sees them as a changed band. Focusing primarily on writing infectious, catchy songs based around heavy, distorted, distinct melody patterns and simplified drum/bass beats, Hypocrisy's sound has completely gelled. The solos in "Reversed Reflections" sound like an updated version of Maiden's "Wasted Years," except it's bigger and, dare say, better. Truly though, the cornerstone of this mammoth release is certainly "Elastic Inverted Visions," with its gliding, bombastic guitar crunch and harmonized chorus. If only the paranormal X-files lyrics were available for the listening public, then the album would truly be bliss in Swedish metal terms. Only one song feels out of place, "Time Warp," with its crusty metal-core overtones, while the rest of the album rests on divine equilibrium. Seek this out at all costs. ~ Jason Hundey

Hypocrisy album
$10.55 Hypocrisy just barely cross into black metal territory with their follow-up to the successful The Fourth Dimension, Abducted. Guitarist/vocalist Peter Tägtgren not only delivers some of the heaviest guitar playing of his career, he makes significant strides with his voice as well. Instead of exclusive reliance on the typical cookie-monster grunting featured on The Fourth Dimension (the musician's first attempt at vocals), Tägtgren expands his repertoire to include sub-sonic growls and piercing black metal screeches, along with the grunts and hollers he had already mastered. In fact, on the title track, the singer/guitarist shifts his voice through all three styles, lending a new dynamic to his band's music. That music, specifically Tägtgren's guitar playing, is an essential element of Abducted's success. The record opens with some truly massive guitar tones that decorate cuts like "Roswell 42" and "Killing Art" and never let up throughout the 13-song track list. Simply stated, this is another highly recommended effort from Hypocrisy. ~ Vincent Jeffries

| | Hypocrisy Final Chapter CD (1997)
Hypocrisy CD music
$10.85 Continuing with the theme of alien abduction begun on Abducted, Hypocrisy forge on with a tunnel-visioned relentlessness, remaining far from boring by adding varied tempos and changing their attack from song to song. Choosing favorites is a difficult task, as The Final Chapter is meant to be an album experience. The production by guitarist/vocalist/bandleader Peter Tagtgren is first-rate for a death metal band, featuring an encyclopedia of guitar tones and vocal stylings, solidifying Hypocrisy's reputation as one of the most progressive death metal acts of the '90s. Shortly before the release of this album, Hypocrisy announced that they were breaking up to pursue other side projects. ~ Jeremy Ulrey

| | Hypocrisy Fourth Dimension CD (1994)
Hypocrisy music CDs
$10.65 After two releases and the departure of two members (guitarist Jonas Österberg after the first record and vocalist Masse Broberg following the second), it was decided that Hypocrisy guitarist/bandleader Peter Tägtgren should take over the lead vocal duties himself. A band lineup was then solidified that would last through at least one breakup and well into the next decade. Obviously, there was something extraordinary about this trio of musicians and the death metal they were able to create. The Fourth Dimension is just the first in a long list of quality offerings these three would produce together. Led by Tägtgren's clever riffs and very capable death metal rasp, this 1994 Nuclear Blast effort features fan favorites like the epic "Request Denied," as well as the title track "The Fourth Dimension." Besides these now-classic numbers, there are other standouts too numerous to mention. Fans of Scandinavian metal in all its forms, as well as Florida death metal aficionados, will all do well to add Fourth Dimension to their collections. A significant metal release. ~ Vincent Jeffries

| | Hypocrisy Into The Abyss CD (2000)
Hypocrisy songs
$10.49 The follow-up to the minor self-titled comeback effort of a year earlier, Into the Abyss might feature a somewhat distracted Hypocrisy on the downward end of its creative journey, but the band still smolders on this 2000 Nuclear Blast effort, refusing to allow much if any distance to appear between itself and the best Scandinavian metal outfits. Starting off with some the most furious Hypocrisy tracks in years, Into the Abyss avoids all subtlety as the straight-ahead death metal (and maybe a little thrash) of "Legions Descend" and "Blinded" sets a furious standard for the following eight tracks to uphold. This energy is maintained for the most part as the band churns through some of its fastest material in years. Besides those already mentioned, other standouts include the full-on death metal of "Digital Prophecy" and "Total Eclipse." Perhaps not Hypocrisy's finest record but far from an afterthought, Into the Abyss is a solid effort from one of Sweden's most brutal '90s metal exports. ~ Vincent Jeffries

| | Amon Amarth The Avenger CD (1999)
Hypocrisy album
$9.69 THE AVENGER is Amon Amarth's second album for Metal Blade, and it features new guitarist Johan Söderberg in place of the departed Anders Hansson. It's not dissimilar to ONCE SENT FROM THE GOLDEN HALL -- basic Scandinavian death/black metal, somewhere in between the predominant flavors of the Norwegian and Swedish scenes, mixing lightning-quick rhythms and noisy guitar textures with deep, growling grooves. [A bonus disc version was also released.]
Recorded in March 1999.

| | Suffocation Despise The Sun CD (2002)
Hypocrisy CD music
$9.85 This five-song EP was Suffocation's first release after their split with Roadrunner Records, and until they surprisingly announced that they were re-forming in early 2003, it also looked to be their last release, period. Originally released on the small Vulture label and later reissued by Relapse in 2002, this disc is prime Suffocation, or in other words, brutal New York-style death metal at its best. For all their imitators over the years, this quintet remains unmatched when it comes to this type of battering, hardcore-laced death metal. These songs are highly complex without sounding forced or arbitrary -- check out the deceptively simple odd-time-signature maneuvers at the beginning of opener "Funeral Inception" for merely one example -- but they're also memorable in a way that few other bands in this style can manage. As always, the guitar interplay of Doug Cerrito and Terrence Hobbs is top-notch, and Frank Mullen's growling vocals are as intimidating and menacing as anyone's. While only 16 minutes long, this EP is as good -- minute per minute -- as Suffocation's standout 1995 full-length Pierced From Within, and despite the presence of not-always-ideal producer/engineer Scott Burns once again, the sound is actually better than it was on that album. Recommended. ~ William York
This death metal classic has been out of print for over 4 years! Suffocation is one of the most revered and influential death metal bands ever! 2002.
