To say that Sepultura fans were saddened by the departure of Max Cavalera would be a gross understatement. Max's loyal following skeptically received Soulfly's debut while remaining Sepultura members forged ahead with a replacement vocalist. With PRIMITIVE, it's apparent that Cavalera's "new tribe" isn't a rebound side project.

Max and company continue the brutal groovecore assault and stretch even further into experimental realms. The reggae-soaked breakdown in "Bring It" and bittersweet vocal harmonies in "Son Song" (featuring Sean Lennon) are surprises you'd be hard pressed to find on a Sepultura album. Fitting guest vocalists including Slipknot's Corey/#8 and Slayer's Tom Araya, who bring challenging contrasts to PRIMITIVE.

Additional personnel includes: Sean Lennon (vocals, guitar); Toby Wright (vocals, clarinet, piano, keyboards, synthesizer, programming); Larry McDonald, Meia Noite (percussion); Deonte Perry (programming); Tom Araya, Grady, Chino, Corey.

Recorded at The Saltmine, Mesa, Arizonia.

Producers: Toby Wright, Max Cavalera, Sean Lennon.

Soulfly: Max Cavalera (vocals, 4-string guitar); Mikey Doling (guitar); Marcelo D. Rapp (bass, percussion); Joe Nunez (drums, percussion).

Rolling Stone (9/28/00, pp.53-4) - 3.5 stars out of 5 - "...Old-school...Primitive is deeper...in the sound of [ex-Sepultura frontman] Max Cavalera's lived-in growl, the churning effect of a 4-string guitar and his concerns..."
Q (11/00, pp.114-6) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...While [their] percussive, ethnic grooves certainlymake an impact, it's only when Cavalera allows his formula to be altered by others that sparks truly fly..."
Alternative Press (11/00, p.128) - 3 out of 5 - "...With pre-millennial speed metal rubbing elbows with hip-hop, excursions into ambient instrumentals and acerbic soul, and a host of guests...PRIMITIVE is certainly a record [with] breadth..."
CMJ (8/28/00, p.32) - "...More relaxed than their debut, the low-end slaughterhouse riffs are still embellished with Cavalera's beloved tribal percussion....[It] locks its teeth into the jugular..."
Melody Maker (10/10/00, p.50) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...The metal album of the year so far....An incendiary blend of nu-metal, reggae and Brazilain rhythms..."
NME (Magazine) (11/4/00, p.46) - 7 out of 10 - "...Draws on Max's political rage at colonial history and crimes of the conquistadors....the heavy metal Bob Marley..."

1 star Really Sucks!!!
From beggining to the end, this is a very poor album... Don't have metal music, cause Max only plays Hip-Hop, Reggae and Grunge. ¡¡¡DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS GARBAGE!!!

2 stars Average, Very Very Average
Soulfly's Primitive is one of those average cd's that you don't really know whether to like it or love it. Primitive has a few good songs eg. Back To The Primitive, Pain (Feat. Chino Moreno & Will Haven) and Jumpdaf**kup (Feat. Corey Taylor), the rest however don't seem to cut the grade. Soulfly's first album however wasn't anything that special either but had more moments to it. There are tow main problems with this album. ONE: This album relies to heavily on guet artists to give it it's "sound", and TWO: The guitar work has so much synthetic sounds placed over them, that at points it sounds as though a computer generated them. Definately not their best work...

Sorcerers of speed metal, protectors of the mighty thrash, knights of the double kick drum--Soulfly are out to take no prisoners with their third album--titled, of course, III. Ex-Sepultura mainman Max Cavalera pulls out all the stops with a jawdropping melange of churning, screaming guitars, throaty Cookie Monster vocals, and polyrhythmic percussion that, occasionally combined with sampled effects, is simultaneously hypnotic and overwhelming. "Downstroy" starts as the band means to continue--full-tilt, while the climax of "Enterfaith" incorporates a bowel-loosening kick drum attack that makes one thankful for the comparatively low-key "One" that immediately follows. There's a Portuguese language track ("Brasil"), followed by a charmingly mesmerizing downtempo interlude in the first couple of minutes of the extended "Tree of Pain," which of course soon metamorphoses into a more literal musical representation of agony. With a pedigree like Cavalera's musical satisfaction is practically guaranteed, and the melding of speed, thrash and nu-metal with imaginative sampling and Brazilian rhythms here conveys a musical depth that makes III a consistently absorbing experience. Additional personnel includes: Otto D'Agnolo (keyboards); Greg Hall (drums). Recorded ...

Primitive
CD $10.89  4.4 stars Top 500 Audio Samples
Welsh heavy-metal quartet Bullet for My Valentine began making serious headlines in the metal press in 2005, and with good reason. The band combines a vintage U.K. metal sound (think Iron Maiden and Judas Priest) with the ferocity of 21st-century metalcore and the emotional angst of emo. THE POISON, the band's punishing full-length debut, finds all these elements mixed to perfect measure ...

Cannibal Corpse Bleeding CD  (1994)

Primitive
CD $9.69  4.4 stars Audio Samples
Original Cannibal Corpse vocalist Chris Barnes would depart from the legendary Buffalo death/gore metal group he founded after 1994's THE BLEEDING; fittingly, he helped to create one of the most lurid and lyrically extreme albums of its kind as a final act of membership. Songs like "She Was Asking For It" and "F*cked with a Knife" are every bit as difficult to swallow as they are musically intense, and this ...

Even though Peace on Earth is Kitaro's first holiday album, it won't offer any surprises to longtime fans of the musician -- it's very similar in style to all of his previous records. That doesn't mean it sounds tired. Kitaro is an inventive musician and he's discovered how to vary his sound, making it fresh most of the time. To some listeners, his style might ...

Good Taste Is Timeless
Holy Modal Rounders Good Taste Is Timeless CD  (1971)

Primitive
CD $11.59  Audio Samples
Recorded in Nasville, Tennessee in 1971. Includes liner notes by Peter Stampfel. Peter Stampfel himself has gone on record with his dissatisfaction with this LP, which he found too stiff and slick. Recorded in Nashville with ex-Elvis Presley guitarist Scotty Moore engineering, and Pete Drake and D.J. Fontana helping out occasionally, it's certainly more professionally produced than anything the Rounders did in the '60s. That doesn't necessarily mean it's bad; a lot of it's mildly bent countrified folk-rock. The zaniness of previous Rounders releases is toned down considerably, but on the other hand it's a lot more listenable than, say, Indian War Whoop. "Boobs a Lot," which the Fugs had recorded back in the mid-'60s, would become the most widely known Rounders track, with the exception of "Bird Song." ~ Richie Unterberger CD debut of rare 1971 album from the godfathers of anti-folk, originally produced by Bob Dorough. Sundazed. 2003. Tyler (piano, organ). The Holy Modal Rounders: Robin Remaily (acoustic guitar); Richard Tyler ...
Driving-Rock Anthems
Driving-Rock Anthems CD  (2004) (Import) Australia

Primitive
CD $14.45
This cool EMI-issued import moves outside the usual compilation jumble of classic rock dinosaurs, new wave resets, and auto-themed novelties for a set that, if not packed with hits, at least functions as a sort of bizarro world FM radio station. Kicking off with Meat Loaf -- who else? -- Driving Rock ushers in the lip-curl fun of Billy Idol and "Rebel Yell." From there we move into Deep Purple's "Fireball" which, reanalyzed, could easily pass for a Queens of the Stone Age beta test. Then it's time for "Stick Together" and a Bryan Ferry impersonation, which for most people resembles Mick Jagger's rooster breaking into 1980s right angles. There's also a pair of absolute gems -- hard rock done bloody right -- in the T. Rex strut of Thunder's "Dirty Love" and the Quireboys' cocksure "Hey You." "Motor Bikin'" from Brit new wave hero Chris Spedding fills the requisite grease and tires quota, with support from Suzi Quatro ("Devil Gate Drive") and the Stranglers ("Go Buddy Go"). ...
