Those with a short cultural memory say that Canada's Nickelback is reminiscent of power-rockers Creed. To the rest of the world, this means that they're influenced by grunge stalwarts Pearl Jam, which also means they're indebted to vintage alt rock and to '70s hard rock. All these sonic touchstones are readily apparent on THE STATE. The album ostensibly revolves around "Leader of Men," which garnered the most attention on the album's initial release, and which is reprised at the end of the album in an acoustic version just to drive the point home.
Anyone drawn in by that cut will find more to like here. The opening track "Breathe" finds Nickelback charging with full force straight out of the gate over a relentless rhythm section and jackhammer guitar riffs. "Deep" slows down the pace to an undulating grind, never releasing the hard-won tension for a moment. While Nickelback may show more of Creed's unrelenting attack than Pearl Jam's eclecticism, fans of either band should feel entirely comfortable in the aural environs of THE STATE.
Debut release from Canadian rock act mixed by Gggarth Rich ardson (Rage Against The Machine). Featuring the Canadian Top 20 rock track 'Leader of Men'. 2000 release. Standard jewelcase.
Recorded at Greenhouse Studios, Burnaby, British Columbia.
Nickelback: Chad Kroeger, Ryan Peake (vocals, guitar); Mike Kroeger (bass); Ryan Vikedal (drums).

GREAT This album is one of the best albums of Nickelback, the song are to make you think and this album has a beat that gets you moving. I'm sure that listening to this CD makes us think: Been there, that's why they're so great! Submitted by Laura (Miami, FL) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Breathe This is a great album all in all but it is made that by "Breathe" "Leader of Men" and "Leader of Men (Acoustic)" Submitted by mseeleyparkside (Ipswich, England) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
This Nickelback pre-sellout venture This is when all the songs rocked (including Leader of Men acoustically!) The State I have has a different album cover but technically marketed for the States (under Roadrunner Records rule. Duh!) Not bad for a breakout. What Rock Is This cd is good i tell you but only for a few songs. Leader Of Men, Old Enough, Breathe and Worthy To Say. If you like them this is a good cd but once you have heard silver side up it is not so good. But i still say worth buying. Submitted by a reviewer (Chris Dover,S.C.,USA) Was This Review Helpful? $15.65 Nickleback's sixth album doesn't stake out new ground, but this Canadian post-grunge quartet is known for their allegiance to old-school hard rock values. That allegiance is borne out on 2008's DARK HORSE, a collection of riff-driven rockers and power ...

| | Kool & The Gang Best Of Kool & The Gang (1969-1976) CD (1993)
State
$12.05 Recorded between 1969 and 1976. Includes liner notes by Cleveland Brown.
THE BEST OF KOOL & THE GANG, 1969-1976 culls highlights from the band's creatively rich, pre-"Celebration" years. Given the album's concentration of intricate horn melodies and catchy synth lines, it's hardly surprise that 1969-1976 occasionally plays like an encyclopedia of contemporary hip-hop samples.
The party whistle that sounds just seconds into the opening "Funky Stuff" sets a celebratory tone that rarely lets up during the 74 minutes that follow. The 1976 B-side "Open Sesame, Pt. 2" is rife with frenetic horn colorings. On "Who's Gonna Take the Weight, Pts. 1 & 2," a short sample of crowd noise played in a loop throughout the song gives the track a carnival-esque feel. "Kool It (Here Comes the Fuzz)" is another studio track that features ersatz crowd noise, and the effect only adds to the festivities. The cooled-out and synthesizer-rich "Summer Madness" and the deeply grooved "N.T., Pts. 1 & 2" are downright infectious. Also included is the classic "Jungle Boogie," a song given new life as part of the PULP FICTION soundtrack. This essential collection makes clear how Kool & the Gang left its indelible imprint on the spirit of the boogie.

$11.49 "SOME OF THE MOST BRILLIANT AND DISTURBED GUITAR PLAYING ON RECORD..." JPT Scare Band has been blazing psychedelic trails for quite some time now. Over the years and decades they have managed to progress from totally unknown to painfully obscure. Here and there, in odd corners of the world, growing numbers of those who love the old school guitar crazy heavy blues rock have somehow become aware of the existence of JPT. The band was featured in an article in the March 2007 issue of Classic Rock Magazine titled, "Lost Pioneers of Heavy Metal" in which they were included in the same exalted company with Iron Butterfly, Bloodrock and Leafhound. Although they have never really considered themselves a true heavy metal band, they will take any good press they can get.The members of JPT are extremely proud of the fact that their first two albums were released on vinyl. Good luck finding a copy of one, as they were pressed in very limited quantities. Their first CD, Sleeping Sickness, was originally released on Monster Records and featured tracks from the two vinyl albums. Sadly, Monster Records imploded and simply vanished into thin air due to heavy craziness and the suicide of one of the two founding partners. Sleeping Sickness was out of print for many years. Happily, their Past Is Prologue CD is still in print and available at CD Baby and the band has released this CD, Jamm Vapour in 2007. The band has also reissued the classic Sleeping Sickness CD, which is available here at CDBaby. So... it's time to take a little trip with JPT. Here is a review from Todd Racer at Ripple Effect Blog:Proto-Metal Report - JPT Scare Band - Jamm Vapour It's just not supposed to happen like this.I'm sorry, but a band who hadn't recorded together in decades and even then, by their own admission were "so very damned obscure," shouldn't be able to get back together, plug in, light some incense in their basement studio and knock out an album this freaking brilliant. But then JPT Scare Band never did anything by the rule book.Back in their day, the early seventies, The JPT Scare Band was an awesome purveyor of absolutely freaked out acid-drenched blues jam rock. Led by the maniac guitar playing of Terry Swope, an unrecognized genius of feedback ignited, blues rock trip-outs, and the stellar rhythm section of Jeff Littrell pounding the skins and Paul Grigsby losing half his cerebellum on bass, the boys put out some "painfully obscure," platters of steaming, ...
