Canada's Fear Factory is part of the '90s industrial metal scene that, unlike its Luddite '70s/'80s forebears, has no qualms about embracing technology (in this case, synths, programming and even a DJ) in the service of their dark, almost gothic vision. On OBSOLETE, the band owes much of its sound to thrash metal, with churning, gut-punching guitar riffs, sore-throat-from-hell vocals and an unrelentingly ominous mood. What separates Fear Factory from more traditionally inclined thrashers is their aforementioned incorporation of synths to help set the mood. Guest Rhys Fulber's keyboards function both as ambient pads to help establish atmosphere and as melodic elements, underscoring chord progressions. There's even a string section orchestrating the band's more melodic cuts. Look out for a spoken word appearance from electro-gloom godfather Gary Numan on the highly melodic title track.

Listener discretion is advised because this isnt a poser band! FF are full on industrial metal and every album they have made (from the ones I've heard) are must owns! The guitars are chockfull of intresting riffs, the vocals are powerful and the drums crush like boulders! Shock, Edgecrusher, Descent, Freedom or Fire, the title track and Resurrection are the best songs on here. Submitted by Slegde Crush (Austin, TX, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Hard-edge industrial metal at it's best! I was originally drawn to this band due to the playing of Zero Signal on MK and this is my first album.
These guys are such innovators. They took death metal, mixed it with eerie keyboard lines, and combined it with jekyll and hyde vocals to create a type of music that it totally different. I usually shy away from stuff this harsh, but the uniqueness of these guys kept drawing me back. Most of the songs on this album are totally great. Resurrection is hauntingly beautiful and Securitron has probably the best guitar/drum intro in metal history. Check these guys out! Submitted by Larry (Queens, NY) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
I'm still sorry I dissed these guys I wont ever diss them again and I'm glad I'm a fan of them now. Shock and Descent are really good songs! Submitted by MarkendustT (Temple, TX, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

$12.59 As influential originators of a revolutionary and oft-copied hybrid of metal and industrial dance music, Fear Factory is one of the few groups that could release an album entitled ARCHETYPE without a hint of self-aggrandizement. Obsolete album
$16.45 Born and raised in New Mexico, David had an eclectic exposure to music from a very early age. In addition to the Big Band and Jazz his parents played often at home on the “Hi-Fi”, there were yearly trips to Tesuque pueblo near his home town of Los Alamos, where the drumming and singing of the Tewa Indians instilled a reverent respect for tribal rhythms and tones. In addition, frequent exposure to Spanish and Mariachi music at gatherings and festivals integrated the culture of European and Mexican music structures into his knowledge base. Of course, Country-Western music also played a significant part in this childhood baptism of music.David played bass and rhythm guitar in several bands through High School, as well as backing vocals. While earning his BA in Mass Communications at NMSU, he studied music and developed his keyboard skills with piano lessons and a minor in music. Performing at the University and local venues, Duff honed his live guitar chops, focusing on Pop and Smooth Jazz primarily.During his years in the Navy, he was stationed in Southeast Asia, and made use of the opportunity to study Eastern music structures and styles, eventually incorporating them into his unique style and compositions. Currently performing weekly at the Wildflower in Deer Valley and Three Tomatoes & a Mozzarella Bistro in North Scottsdale, David brings a mix of his own compositions, as heard ...
