These self-proclaimed "freaks" from Des Moines draw upon elements of thrash, hip-hop, and shock-rock with brutal results. The music world may not have seen such a marriage of aggression and technical precision since the rise of thrash pioneers Slayer. At times Slipknot steps into the musical guises of heavy purveyors such as Korn, Powerman 5000, and Sepultura. However, even with the derivative nature of metal, this eight-member ensemble manages to be something original.
SLIPKNOT is a mix of dark interludes that segue into carefully crafted songs. The tracks use metaphors to describe themes of isolation, insecurity, confusion, and self-loathing. In "Surfacing" and "No Life," rap verses give way to melodic choruses. The rhythmic pounding of "Prosthetics" is as complex as it is relentless; a credit to drummer Joey Jordison, whose virtuosity is the driving force of Slipknot. "Only One" is a contrast of hip-hop funk and mosh-pit abandon. The band's style is best defined in "Scissors," where whispered lyrics give way to screams of "biding my time until the time is right / it's time." Slipknot has bid its time wisely and is poised to take its place among its heavy-handed musical peers.

WHOA! This album rocks! It starts out with the song sic, and it was an awsome way to start off the album. It also has really good songs like wait and bleed and spit it out! There are other really good songs on this album like surfacing, eyeless, and me inside. Any SlipKnoT fan will love this album. Once you listen to it, you gotta have more! ~ Catch ya later you sic maggots! Submitted by a reviewer (Wallingford, CT, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 1 found this helpful.
Larger than Life... These guys are absolutely amazing. Intensity and a flair for macabre showmanship should vault this project to the nu-metal forefront. For any who have not yet witnessed this band at work: Think of inmates from a criminally insane institution taking over the asylum and then making a soundtrack. If agression, dark-humor, and severely traumatizing masks are your thing, you really should check this out. Submitted by a reviewer (butler, ky) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
mind-blowing. for a debut album, Slipknot's self-titled release really stands out from other 90's nu-metal bands, like Korn and Limp Bizkit. With memorial song such as (sic), Wait and Bleed, Spit it Out, and Purity, this album is one of the most unique and more defining albums of all time. The only let down I found on this album was that eyeless was a bit repetitive and to really appreciate Tattered and Torn you have to listen to it many times. But all and all, this album is a good investment for any metal fans. Submitted by dreadthenameless (Epsom, NH, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Smashing the sophomore jinx, Limp Bizkit puts together a screaming second album in SIGNIFICANT OTHER. The band's songwriting has matured, and the experience of touring is evident in the production. Singer Fred Durst is a frontman for the next millennium, combining hardcore metal with the slickness of hiphop. Limp Bizkit is backed by the turntable skills of House Of Pain's DJ Lethal. You can hear the hiphop influences in almost every track--from the lead single, "Nookie," to the DJ Premier-produced "N 2 Gether Now." Other highlights include "Break Stuff," "Just Like This," and "I'm Broke." Be sure to check out the Durst-directed video for "Nookie," as it shows just how multi-talented Limp Bizkit really is.

| | Korn CD (1994)
Slipknot CD music
$6.25 "Shoots And Ladders" was nominated for a 1997 Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance.
"Are you readyyyy?!" With that question--an inquiry that begins as a growl and ends as a scream--Jonathan Davis provides a fitting beginning to this searing collection of relentless, metallicized thrash/funk. His question is well-posed; this is not music for the faint of heart. Producer Ross Robinson and Korn have found a formula that works: start with a layer of fuzz-soaked guitar, add some big beats, and finish the whole construct off with a healthy dose of Davis's tortured vocals.
This is dark music, scary music. It's also occasionally funky music. "Ball Tongue," with its stop/start syncopation, tinny guitar whine, and stripped-down-to-the-bone verse, is a perfect encapsulation of the Korn style. The track also contains a trace of (gasp!) Hip-Hop flavor, but you won't be hearing this L.A. quartet on the dance floor any time soon. Their assault is severe, fueled with explosive bursts of guitar a la Metallica, as well as frenetic tempo changes reminiscent of Faith No More. The themes are frustration, alienation, pain, explored the way a bulldozer might peruse a patch of daisies.
Through songs like "Divine," where guitar and drums intertwine to form a sinewy, intricate rhythmic pulse, and "Fake," in which Davis's voice alternates between a dreamy sing-song and a demonic roar, Korn amply displays both their musicianship and their rage. But the disc's most startling moment is the last. "Daddy," in which the farthest reaches of human cruelty and depravity are held up and judged by an abused child, begins with a haunting surprise--and ends in an emotional meltdown, a final purge, with Davis sobbing, screaming, "You ruined my life!" Korn exorcises their demons the only way they know how--with music.
Recorded at Indigo Ranch Studios, Malibu, California.
Personnel: Brian Welch (vocals, guitar); Jonathan Davis (vocals, bagpipe); Judith Kiener (vocals); James Schaffer, James "Munky" S
| | Korn Follow The Leader CD (1998)
Slipknot music CDs
$8.49 Tracks 1 through 12 are silent and are each five-seconds long. The album's track listing begins with number 13, "It's On!"
Like Fear Factory and a host of others, Korn combines streamlined metal with ominous industrial touches and an undercurrent of hip-hop rhythm. FOLLOW THE LEADER is an urban nightmare, as unrelentingly dark as Onyx, Tool or Nine Inch Nails, and stylistically indebted to all three. The twin guitars of Munky and Head provide the requisite rock quotient, but throughout the album the band ventures beyond heavy rock cliches. The churning, jackhammer rhythms are leavened by subtle synthesizer work and occasionally the band falls into a bracing hip-hop beat, allowing them to show off the hard-edged syncopation that's at the core of their very visceral sound. Fostering the rap influence, Ice Cube makes a guest appearance on "Children of the Korn," and his hellbound, apocalyptic worldview sounds perfectly at home on FOLLOW THE LEADER.
Recorded at NRG Recording, North Hollywood, California.
Korn: Jonathan Davis (vocals, bagpipes); Munky, Head (guitar); Fieldy (bass); David (drums).
Producers: Steve Thompson, Toby Wright, Korn.
Additional personnel: Ice Cube, Trevant Hardson (vocals); Justin Walden (drums, programming); Tommy D (programming).
| | Korn Issues CD (1999)
Slipknot songs
$7.59 The music of Korn speaks to those on the fringes of society. The band's trademark hip-core has evolved into a more clearly defined but equally urgent musical vision. Korn's sense of musical urgency and its ambition to make its mark on music is furthered with ISSUES.
"Beg for Me" is a track likely to incite the swirling pits at the band's legendary live shows. Showing that the group hasn't lost its down-to-earth sensibility, Korn invited fans to compete for the cover art of ISSUES, releasing versions featuring the winning piece as well as the efforts of three finalists. The emotional journey undergone by vocalist Johnathan Davis on tracks like "Hey Daddy" is truly strengthened by his movement away from his more abrasive vocal style and toward a more dominantly melodic approach. Davis digs more deeply into his tortured emotions on efforts such as "No Way," where he sings: "lately things aren't going my way / lately everything is gray / it feels like something / it feels like nothing." That hazy emotional landscape is what strikes a responsive chord with Korn fans and makes ISSUES a landmark album.

| | Slipknot Iowa CD (2001)
Slipknot album
$15.65 "Left Behind" was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance.
The two most anticipated hard rock/heavy metal releases of 2001 were unquestionable Tool's LATERALUS and Slipknot's sophomore effort, IOWA. The nine-piece masked band has returned with another platter of bile-spitting, hate-filled rage rock, certain to please fans of their self-titled 1999 debut. Despite the debut instantly making the band a promising metal contender (going platinum with absolutely no radio or MTV play), the intensity level hasn't dipped in the slightest on their second platter. Producer Ross Robinson is once again back on board, and IOWA delivers from beginning to end, as evidenced by such angst-filled, explosive tracks as "People = Shit," "The Heretic Anthem," and "Left Behind," to name but a few. IOWA is surely destined to be the album that catapults Slipknot to the top of the heavy metal heap. It serves as the perfect soundtrack for disaffected teenage metalheads the world over.

| | Slipknot Vol.3: The Subliminal Verses CD (2004)
Slipknot CD music
$14.89 Far removed from their rap-metal roots, these masked men of extreme metal show no signs of relenting with VOL. 3: (THE SUBLIMINAL VERSES). For this brutal chapter of the Slipknot story, the jagged sound of fierce heaviness and moody melodicism is executed deftly, as Slipknot ducks crossover cliches and nu-metal formula. Esteemed studio guru Rick Rubin captures the group's raw intensity with sonic reverence, a feat not easily achieved with bands of this style. VOL. 3 delivers all the elements that Slipknot fans have come to expect and demand. From solid, catchy choruses ("Duality") to fearsome blasts of noise and percussive gymnastics ("Three Nil," "Welcome"), and borderline balladry ("Vermilion Pt. 2"), unsettling emotions and images are vividly depicted for the listener by this notorious Iowan ensemble.

The bombastic pounding, dueling guitars, and falsetto singing defined this genre perfectly. Metal fans may enjoy this more than Night on Brocken, especially "Pirates of the Underground" and "The Apparition," but there is very little, if anything, for the progressive fan. ~ Robert Taylor

| | Racer X Getting Heavier CD (2003)
Slipknot songs
$14.55 There was a period in the late '80s where rock guitar was headed in a highly technical direction, where you'd have to practice on your instrument for hours upon hours to keep up with the players in your latest edition of Guitar for the Practicing Musician. One of the best examples of this was Racer X, which included not one but two "shredders": Paul Gilbert and Bruce Bouillet. However, by 1989 the group was kaput when Gilbert decided to jump ship and join up with bass extraordinaire Billy Sheehan in pop metallists Mr. Big. When Racer X reunited in 2000, Gilbert assumed all the guitar duties in the band, which he obviously has no problem handling, as evidenced by such subsequent releases as 2003's Getting Heavier. Whereas some rock bands mellow as the years add up, Racer X is an exception, as they stick closely to their original game plan: highly skilled metal. In fact, they spend too much time focusing on the technical side, as the lyrics/vocals of "Lucifer's Hammer" are what you'd expect a collaboration between Nigel Tufnel and a high school metal band circa 1987 to sound like. But let's face it, it's safe to say that everyone buying a Racer X album is listening for the complex playing, not the lyrics, and there's loads of it here, especially such tracks as "Catapult to Extinction." ~ Greg Prato
