Longtime fans of Sepultura who feared that ex-leader Max Cavalera would conform to the tempting (and lucrative) alternative music scene upon his departure need not worry. Like his last release with Sepultura, the superb Roots, experimentation (Brazilian tribal drumming/rhythms, samples, unearthly sound effects, etc.) is a catalyst here on Soulfly, but gut-wrenching heavy metal is the foundation for almost all of the tracks. The energy and intensity don't let up for a second throughout this debut, as heard on the grinding tracks "Eye for an Eye," "Bumbklaatt," and "The Song Remains Insane." Max had stated in interviews his fondness for reggae legend Bob Marley, and the title track proves to be his first foray into reggae/dub territory (and serves as a nice break from the rest of the album's over the top metal). The album also contains guest appearances by several leading hard rockers -- Chino Moreno from the Deftones, Fred Durst and DJ Lethal from Limp Bizkit, Eric Bobo from Cypress Hill, and Burton C. Bell, Dino Cazares, and Christian Olde Wolbers from Fear Factory. Soulfly is the perfect vehicle for Cavalera's unique heavy metal vision, and a great way to kick off the second part of his recording career. ~ Greg Prato

the greatest album of all time SOULFLY You do your thing Max! A big F.U. goes to Andreas, Sepultura is Max and Igor's group. They let you in and should have kicked you out, but enough about that this is the soulfly review. This is the best cd i've heard since "Roots". With songs like prejudice, quilombo, fire, and tribe just to name a few this cd is a 10 out of 5 stars. Anyone who say's the tribal music dosn't fit is not a true fan, an does not dsevere to own the cd. With guest like chino from the deftones and fred durst and Bengi just proves Max is the man in front of his peers. If you don't own this cd buy now what the hell is your problem. I hope you live long enough to see soulfly rise higher than any band ever. R.I.P. Dana we know what you meant to Max see you soon, much love. Submitted by a reviewer (peachtree city GA.) Better than Sepultura? Hi there I was so down about Max leaving Sepultura I was going crazy waiting for Soulfly to come out. I love this album every song kicks ass and even the acoustic jams are pretty cool. Its hard to answer the above question but because of who Sepultura is but I will say that Soulfly is a hell of alot better than the new Sepultura. Max is right now the best metal musician there is. Soulfly Seeing as Soulfly totally rock I think all heavy metal fans should get this album they are in my top five favorate bands and they're music is some of the best I've heard. I'd have to say that the best song is tribe but the first six or seven ones are acually the best on the album I buy all their shirts and everything I can afford, when I get some more cash I'll be buyin' their new album anyway they are a very good band and I reccommend it to anyone considering buying a cd. Soulfly
$6.49 Live Recording
Alice In Chains: Layne Staley, Jerry Cantrell (vocals, guitar); Michael Starr (bass); Sean Kinney (drums). Additional personnel: Tom Araya (background vocals). Recorded in 1992. Dirt is Alice in Chains' major artistic statement and the closest they ever came to recording a flat-out masterpiece. It's a primal, sickening howl from the depths of Layne Staley's heroin addiction, and one of the most harrowing concept albums ever recorded. Not every song on Dirt is explicitly about heroin, but Jerry Cantrell's solo-written contributions (nearly half the album) effectively maintain the thematic coherence -- nearly every song is imbued with the morbidity, self-disgust, and/or resignation ...

Chimaira: Mark Hunter (vocals); Rob Arnold, Matt DeVries (guitar); Jim LaMarca (bass); Andols Herrick (drums); Chris Spicuzza. Producers: Ben Schigel, Mark Hunter, Rob Arnold. Personnel: Mark Hunter (vocals); Rob Arnold (guitar); Andols Herrick (drums). Audio Mixer: Colin Richardson. Recording information: Spider Studios, Strongsville, OH. Photographer: Todd Bell. The Impossibility of Reason is the debut Roadrunner full-length for Chimaira, a Cleveland sextet that likes to think of itself as advance scouts of the NWOAHM, or New Wave of American Heavy Metal, a metal movement to rival the British heavy metal onslaught that conquered the world in the 1980s. And while almost two decades of metal music have made a fully original sound almost impossible, Chimaira comes out of the gate with enough key of C attitude to turn heads and get them banging. Metalcore is the name ...
| | Mudvayne Lost And Found CD (2005)
Soulfly
$8.99 Mudvayne: Chad Gray (vocals); Greg Tribbett (guitar); Ryan Martinie (bass guitar); Matt McDonough (drums). It's been three years for Mudvayne, three years when metal started to reject its "rap" and "nu" prefixes. At first, Lost and Found reflects that realignment. Vocalist Chad Gray and his mates have nixed the nicknames and makeup for their third Epic full-length, and they try to focus on songs instead of heavy music shtick. However, they equate getting real with the melodramatic plead that interrupts the razor-sharp main part of "Choices," and Gray can't overcome lines like "IMN"'s "No one/No one could ever understand/This life." The song is about suicide, which is very serious. But yelling "F*ck this sh*t!" over thudding rhythms just isn't very powerful anymore. They nail it on opener "Determined" -- one of Mudvayne's all-time strongest tracks, it's a fist-swinging blast of modernized thrash. But Lost and Found soon falls into the familiar, busting no-one-understands-me lyrics and matching moments of refreshing rawness to stretches of stereotypical "corporate metal," a non-genre that's risen up to accept loud rock refugees and the harder side of post-grunge. The energy in "Determined" and "Just" is sapped by the meandering "TV Radio" and "Fall into Sleep," and ultimately ...
