Canada's Fear Factory is part of the '90s industrial metal scene that, unlike its Luddite '70s/'80s forebears, has no qualms about embracing technology (in this case, synths, programming and even a DJ) in the service of their dark, almost gothic vision. On OBSOLETE, the band owes much of its sound to thrash metal, with churning, gut-punching guitar riffs, sore-throat-from-hell vocals and an unrelentingly ominous mood. What separates Fear Factory from more traditionally inclined thrashers is their aforementioned incorporation of synths to help set the mood. Guest Rhys Fulber's keyboards function both as ambient pads to help establish atmosphere and as melodic elements, underscoring chord progressions. There's even a string section orchestrating the band's more melodic cuts. Look out for a spoken word appearance from electro-gloom godfather Gary Numan on the highly melodic title track.
Limited edition pressing of the metal group's 1998 album asan enhanced disc featuring a screensaver with sound. Aconcept album about a negative utopian society in thefuture, it draws elements from everything from the Bible,'1984' & 'Brave New World' to 'Terminator', 'Blade Runner' &Rush's '2112' album! 10 tracks. A Roadrunner release.

Their best. This is Fear Factory's best album. Though most people prefer Demanufacture, I think Obsolete is a better quality album. The theme, the continuity, and the quality, and the music are top notch on this release. This album is awesome. And unilike Demanufacture, there is no filler on this album (Dog Day Sunrise?) Don't waste your money on the digipack though, only 2 of the 5 extra songs are any good, and the extra tracks ruin the flow of the album. cars? what were they thinking? Excellent Concept album... The album is as solid as the heavy sounds within. No doubt one really heavy album. Yet, it's a must for all concept album collectors. The storyline is pretty good, and the album is structured amazingly. It's really hard not to listen all in one sitting. You get a real sense of the story's setting and the emotions of the characters. I would never have thought that such heavy music could deliver such structured melodic songs that all flow together to tell a story. Unbelievable! And hey they're Canadian!

One of the best cds in the World.... This is one of the best Fear Factory cds if not the best. If you like Heavy,Black/Death, or Industrial Metal this cd if for you. This cd is very heavy. One of the best songs on it, Edgecrusher, starts out with a loud, heavy guitar, followed by vocals with an accompning Stand-up Bass, after that it goes to the chorus with heavy riffs and growling vocals. I think this cd is one of the best Cds of all time and that everyone should get it. Submitted by shartman (Small Town, IN) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

| | Korn Life Is Peachy CD (1996)
Obsolete
$7.59 LIFE IS PEACHY contains a CD-Extra video segment of Korn's performance at the Astoria Theater, London, England.
"No Place To Hide" was nominated for a 1998 Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance.
Full of shrilly, distorted guitar squeals, bass-heavy darkness and laryngitis-inducing growls, Korn's sophomore turn, the oh-so sarcastically titled LIFE IS PEACHY, is a musical tour through some truly evil corners. The Bakersfield quintet's paranoia-induced rampage makes countless by-the-numbers death-metal acts seem cartoonish by comparison.
Mostly, Korn succeeds in inspiring rage and terror by not overplaying its hand, and by mixing in hip-hop beats, punk abandon and funky humor with its thrash. Jonathan Davis croons as ably as he roars, making his "Exorcist" impression ...

When an album bears the legend "WARNING! This project may cause pregnancy!," it better contain some serious lovemaking grooves. THINGS THAT LOVERS DO luckily lives up to its claims, delivering an old-school-inspired slice of sweet slow-jam music that sounds like it could inspire more action than Barry White's waterbed. Over liquid throbbing bass and minimal instrumentation, producers L.A. Reid and Michael Mauldin wisely allow Kenny Lattimore and Chante Moore's exquisite vocals to do most of the work. The singers expertly wrap their voices around monumental hits by Lionel Richie, Billy Preston & Syreeta Wright, Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell, and others. Obviously, tackling songs on the level of "You're All I Need To Get By," requires some serious talent, but Lattimore and Moore are up to ...

Obsolete
$9.75 Beaten Back to Pure may want to reconsider their decision to label their sound "Grassroots Piss-Metal," since it only serves to lower expectations of what's in store. Just as initially indifferent opening number "American Vermin" has you settling down for what appears to be a rather ugly, rough-hewn romp through Neanderthal stoner/sludge country, the song ...

Obsolete
$10.15 If it’s true that, as Elvis Costello once famously opined, writing about music is like dancing about architecture then describing the music of Ferocious Bubbles may resemble an arc that begins with Isadora Duncan and ends with Merce Cunningham. It’s a music that even at its most spare is beautiful and fluid – never afraid of abstraction, incident, or the ability to change. At its essence is a vital buoyancy that, despite singer / songwriter Pete Szelenbaum’s tendency to stay grounded, pulls everything skyward. There are no fixed points – even when things seem irrevocably stuck. There are several songs in the Ferocious Bubbles oeuvre that long for something off in the distance, but never before has the band released an album so occupied with the notion of escape. That being said, one might imagine the Ferocious Bubbles’ latest album, Save Yourself and Run Away as the soundtrack of the modern dance equivalent of Waiting For Godot. Listen close and you’ll hear the nervous shuffle that comes before making a move towards the unknown: Ecstasy, fear, calm, darkness, acceptance – it’s all there. But despite the rush of “Airport,” “Skywaves” or the soaring title track, the protagonists of Save Yourself and Run Away are on the verge of movement but never quite make a leap. Or so our ears tell us: Perhaps it’s only through that “Hopeless sense of hope that only the hopeless would know” described to us in Save Yourself and Run Away’s meditative centerpiece, “St. Jude,” that we know there is life after the track fades... That we know someone has made a move somewhere. Ferocious Bubbles began with Pete Szelenbaum’s head full of songs and a four-track recorder. Though he had been writing songs for some time, it wasn’t until 1999 that a revolving cast of friends and admirers lent their considerable talents to fleshing these songs out live and in ...
